September 15th, 2020 | Bear Country | Easy to miss side track off Highway 11, unmaintained recreation area in beautiful setting. Lots of level sites, suitable for all rigs, portable toilets and fire rings. Quiet and scenic, can stay up to 14 days, no charge. |
September 15th, 2020 | Preachers Point | Beautiful, spacious unmanaged recreation site, lots of level camping by beautiful Abraham Lake. |
March 15th, 2020 | La Casa Del Sol Naciente CAMPING | Agree with Charlietewson on all except Wifi - it was VERY weak, and everyone here complained about it too. Otherwise a great place and good value for SPdA. |
March 14th, 2020 | Mercedes Kaufmann | As described, basically a big truck dealership with lots of lighting and a security office out front. "Jaime" was the security guard on when we came and he allowed us to stay out front under the lights near the office. You are up high and off the highway. It is reasonably quiet late at night but busy in the early morning and later afternoon/evening. No facilities, good safe spot for a night . |
March 12th, 2020 | Hostal de Sal Los Lipez | Hostal in San Juan that allowed us to camp in the space in front for 30Bs ( two people and camper ) with use of bano and hot shower. Has a nice bar/ comedor as well. Manager was friendly.. Quiet location . |
March 12th, 2020 | May Apa Lavanderia | Excellent service and quality work - and on time ! We paid 18Bs/kg for same day service. Would recommend |
March 12th, 2020 | Eucalyptus Uyuni | True.dit comments are bang on. In a city where secured gates parking for bigger rigs is tough, this place was an oasis for us. Super helpful - car wash place next door was good and the laundromat around the corner was excellent ( 18 Bs/kg if you ask !). Wifi was strong and shower hot. |
March 6th, 2020 | VJ GAS | Just south of Sicuani, right on the highway so a convenient stop between Cusco and Puno. I dropped in today, rang the bell. "David" answered and I told him I needed to top up my 9kg ( 20lb) US style portable tank. He looked at the fitting and said no problem - 15 mins later my tank was filled for 3 soles per kg. Very easy place to get propane. No questions asked at all. |
March 1st, 2020 | Hotel de Turistas | Convenient stop on the long drive from Colca Canyon to Cusco. Off the Main Street so quiet and lots of space. We paid 30 soles for 2 people ,camper and two showers so negotiated a bit. Safe, and good wifi - the place could use a little TLC. But there are not many options in the area. Recommended |
February 27th, 2020 | Parquedero Playa | A parking station in the centre of town that accepts Overlanders . We did not stay but described our vehicle ( 6.5 m truck camper ) and they advised it would be 35 sols for 24 hours. Includes toilet and cold shower and gated security. It's shaded with high clearance for bigger rigs. |
February 23rd, 2020 | Hotel Hamacas | Awesome spot ! As described below - very secure with gate locked at light and 24 hr guard. They welcome Overlanders. Victor is the gatekeeper and very helpful. Raul is sometimes there and speaks English fluently. We ate at the hotel - excellent pepperoni pizza for 30 soles and the camping was free. Park near the little office and you get power too. Not noisy at night - we were there on Saturday - and lots of restaurants and a tienda close by. Nice sea breeze and sunsets as well...! |
February 21st, 2020 | Hostal Casa Amelia | As described below and very nice - super convenient location. A real treat after a long drive south through the desert. They even cleaned up the notoriously dirty bathroom while we were here. |
February 21st, 2020 | Real Huascaran Hotel, Huaraz | As described in recent posts and still 30 soles per vehicle to camp. Reasonably quiet for an in town location and felt secure as the field is fenced at gates with 24 hr security. You can pay with credit card too. Hotel has seen better days but staff are nice and there is a reasonable restaurant inside if you don't want to cook. |
February 20th, 2020 | Camping Guadelupe Jaime Veliz Caraz | Really nice spot with lots of room, quiet, great views and THE CLEANEST bathrooms in any campsite we have visited. Wifi was fine and it is a 1 SOL minibus ride to town - they pass by regularly. Jaime is a very nice host. 15 SOL pp pn. Best place in Caraz. |
February 17th, 2020 | Police Checkpoint / Bribe Attempt | No evidence of it as we went by late on Feb 17. |
February 17th, 2020 | Macara, Ecuador to Suyo, Peru | Very easy and fast crossing, Ecuador to Peru. Ecuador about 15 mins for stamping and TIP release, Peru a bit longer as they photographed us , fingerprinted us and did a cursory inspection of the vehicle. Asked about fruit and veggies but ignored the extra 40 litres of cheap Exuadoran gasoline we had in the back. Very friendly |
February 17th, 2020 | Chiclayo - Pandilla falsos mecánicos | No one around as we drove by yesterday - looked but could not see them |
February 17th, 2020 | Police Checkpoint | Not there as of Feb 17, 2020, when we drove by - and we looked for it |
February 15th, 2020 | casita Torre del agua entrance | As described in the other listing - great spot, wonderful hosts and an easy 20 min walk to town ( or $1.50 taxi ride ). Really enjoyed our time here. Showers are hot and wifi works well. |
February 7th, 2020 | Cuello De Luna | As described - one of the best places we have stayed at. Well maintained, great ambience, and a great deal at $10/rig ( with power ) |
January 19th, 2020 | Donkey Sunrise Campground | Echo the comments of SidewaysMoon - just an excellent campground that caters very well to Overlanders needs. The pool is a huge bonus !
January 17th, 2020 | Steel Horse Colombia | As described - awesome location. Great vibe, always interesting overland guests to share tales with and Yvette's cooking is NOT to be

December 4th, 2019 | Self service laundry cafe | Still $14,000 COP for up to 8 kilos washed and died in modern machines. Owner speaks English and will move your wash to the dryer while you wander the streets. Best place in town and most other are 6-7,000 COP per kilo. |
November 30th, 2019 | Al Bosque Hostel & Glamping | Great spot. Super helpful staff, owner David speaks great English and is happy to give all kinds of advice on the area including Medellin. Take the Metro Cable ( cable car ) to Medellin and get awesome city views. Nearby Parque Arvi is excellent ,too. Great hot shower, Wifi, and they have a guy that will pick up and refill your North American propane tank ( our 20lb tank was 45,000 COP - $13 ). |
November 29th, 2019 | Restaurante y hotel El viajero | Basic hotel with decent restaurant and cheap food. We paid 40,000 COP for a double with private bathroom and AC after a little haggling. Vehicle could be parked right outside our room. 24 hour security and a gas station beside it so always people around. There are no campsites in this area between Cartagena and Medellin so for $12 we thought this was a good deal. Staff were friendly and wifi was ok ( strong in the restaurant ). |
November 23rd, 2019 | Beer & Laundry | Awesome place - both owners, Ivan and Lilian speak English and can give tips on ANYTHING Colombian. Food is great, too ! |
November 17th, 2019 | Terkel Gas station, about 30k from Colon. Allowed a night camping free. Manager Santiago was helpful. | Small Terpel Gas station with bathroom, just off Hwy #3. Flat room, for two rigs. |
November 6th, 2019 | Pura Van Campsite | Agree with all others - great spot and super helpful owner. Still $6 p/p. We stayed 2 nights and would go back. If taking public transport ( which is close ) its a bit of a hike into town - the two buses combined with wait in between took us almost 2 hours each way but it is very cheap at least ( and we went during rush hour ). Best spot we stayed at in C/R. |
November 2nd, 2019 | EXIT Nicaragua - Penas Blancas, Nicaragua/Costa Rica border | We followed Borderhelper’s steps and it was accurate as of Nov 1. Helpers were not too aggressive when we were there. |
November 1st, 2019 | ENTER COSTA RICA | Terradrifting’s comments at the very beginning of this post are still accurate ( prices have changed of course - our insurance was $45 as of Nov 1/2019 ).
