Two Hungry Tourists Check-Ins

October 5th, 2017 Mechanic Futema

We broke down in the middle of nowhere and were towed to Guerrero Negro. Every single person we spoke to in town recommended this mechanic workshop. We had to wait a day for a mechanic to be available but it was with the wait. Abi worked on our van all day fixing our radiator plus some other issues. We were really happy with his work. Able to pay with credit card.

October 1st, 2017 Parador Punta Prieta y Grúas Lopez - NOT RECOMMENDED

Untrustworthy mechanic who really didn't seem to know his stuff. Wanted to completely remove and bypass our thermostat, for what turned out to be a simple radiator leak. Also charged us through the nose to simply use his phone (as there was no cell reception). He wound up charging over 700mxp for us just to call our insurance a few times. There's gringo tax, and then there's taking advantage of people having zero alternative options. And then he had the nerve to ask for a tip on top of that!

There is also a tow truck (grua) on the same property, phone number: 01 200 124 9117. We didn't use them so can't comment.

September 30th, 2017 Trailer park/dry camping

All prior descriptions accurate, plus his 3 dogs are lovely and super gentle. Added bonus: it actually gets cool at night!

September 30th, 2017 Desinsectizacion

Passed through at 4:30pm (Baja California Sur time), and all vehicles in both directions were being waved through with no stops. Not sure if this was due to the time of day, the fact that it was a weekend, or we were just lucky.

September 29th, 2017 Huerta Don Chano RV Park

Positives: Good price (150 because low season), decent wifi, warm showers, nice lots, good power, shady, nice owner on arrival, free papaya.

Negatives: After initially telling us we could use a fridge set up next to our van, the owner sent a pickup full of workmen late at night to remove it, making us get up to remove all our things from it. Lights were also kept on all night, which didn't help with the already abundant mosquitos and wasps.

A nice place, and assuming the fridge thing was out of the ordinary, seems like it'd be a nice place to spend a few nights. (Just be sure to bring repellant!)

September 20th, 2017 Vagabundos Del Mar.

I wasn't able to find this place.

September 19th, 2017 TMC and Baja Ferry

Tip: Carry ID if you are not the one driving the vehicle onto the ferry. I had no idea it was required and no one mentioned it when buying a ticket. It was messy but I made it into the ferry with a photo off my passport on my phone! Oh and the ferry got to La Paz at 1pm and we weren't offloaded until 2:30pm. Bring snacks!

September 19th, 2017 Pemex

Wifi password is BozXNCaFHk and showers are 25 pesos

September 15th, 2017 Electrical mechanic

Servicio Cortez is an electrical mechanic shop in Guadalajara. They repaired our starter motor and related electronics in a morning. We were very happy with their work and communication. We were able to pay with credit card.

September 14th, 2017 San Juan del Lago

Beautiful place to stay with everything you need. Art is a very kind host. The property has 9 or 10 rescue dogs that are friendly, five horses and even a cat! We loved it here. I've added some GPS co-ordinates to the description to help with navigation. Don't follow Google Maps.

September 2nd, 2017 PEMEX Before Ixmiquilpan

Quiet night, free bathrooms

August 9th, 2017 Taller "Fixer"

On the recommendation of a friend's living in Merida, we visited Mauricio at this workshop for some work on our alternator. He diagnosed the issue, sourced the parts (for cheaper We than he originally quoted), and replaced it, in one day.
He speaks a little English, but obviously it's easier if you speak Spanish. Phone number is 3742 142.

July 11th, 2017 Pemex 12535

Noisy, but bathrooms and showers, room for big rigs, and shaded parking for smaller vehicles.

July 10th, 2017 State police checkpoint.

Whilst everything turned out okay in the end, this was a really weird checkpoint for us. The officer sniffed my husbands hands, accused him of shaking and that he was smoking marijuana. Said he was getting the dogs but then didn't. Anyway, after standing our ground they waved us on. Weird.

July 9th, 2017 Bar Puro Mexicano

Really cool little bar that sells different types of mezcal, cocktails and a few bites to eat. Highly recommended.

July 4th, 2017 Pemex

Correcting location/co-ordinates. No Pemex in original location however there is one just outside Ocosingo which is where it should now reflect.

July 3rd, 2017 Agua Azul

Camped here for one night near camping area 2. No one asked for payment (aside from the entrance to the Falls themselves). Quiet night and the falls are stunning!

July 3rd, 2017 Lavanderia Revolucion

10 pesos a kilo for drying only (they weighed it after it was dry too!). Our clothes wouldn't dry in the humid weather after we did a hand wash. Done in 3 hours, really lovely lady.

July 1st, 2017 Camping Michol

We camped two nights here in our van for 30 pesos per night for the 2 of us. They let us plug in to a little cabana to run our fan at no extra cost. However beware - the electricity was a little dodgy as I got zapped by my laptop when it was plugged in. Friendly dogs and little puppies! We really enjoyed this place. It's really quite nice and has everything you need, including wifi!

July 1st, 2017 Café colibri

Air conditioning and wifi, it was perfect. Parking out front was easy. Staff are lovely and attentive.

July 1st, 2017 Refaccionaría el Amigo

Mechanic workshop that specialises in pipes and hoses. They fixed our high pressure hose problem in less than an hour. Really nice guys!

June 30th, 2017 Agua Clara

Here be mosquitoes.
(Stunning scenery though, and the lovely family caring for the property refused any payment!)

June 29th, 2017 Jose Manuel

Friendly and thorough mechanic who happily looked at our vans issues and suggested places to get parts. Seemed to know his stuff!

June 26th, 2017 Ciudad Cuahtemoc, Chiapas, Mexico to Las Mesilla, Huehuetenango, Guatemala

Coming from Guatemala to Mexico you need to have your car fumigated for 95 MX pesos. Apparently you can also pay in quetzales however we didn't have any left. The money changers have awful rates and there are no ATMs.

June 6th, 2017 Hacienda Vieja, Ciudad Pedro de Alvarado, Guatemala to La Hachadura, El Salvador

El Salvador to Guatemala

We crossed just after lunchtime and it was easy. No helpers!

Exiting El Salvador: make sure you have a copy of your TIP. You'll pass a checkpoint where a guy will take your original TIP, cancel it and sign the copy saying it's cancelled. Easy. Get stamped out of El Salvador.

Entering Guatemala: Get stamped in at migration. Get a copy of the entry stamp, your passport photo page, registration and driver licence at the copy shop nearby. Change some money so you have 160 Q for the car permit. Go to aduana, hand over originals and copies. Pay fee at the bank next door. Come back with the receipt and they'll give you the TIP. Check it for mistakes (ours had three).

Stress free border crossing and it really wasn't a big deal at all.

June 6th, 2017 El Jordan, km93.5, zona de recreo

Sadly no one was there when we showed up at 4:30pm on a Tuesday! The place looks really nice.

Also I got changed by geese so watch out!

June 5th, 2017 Los Primos

Great service for a reasonable price. These guys changed our oil (we had our own filter) quickly and checked all our other liquid levels. They had 5w30 which we've had trouble finding in southern Central America.

June 1st, 2017 Puma Gas Station

This place definitely isn't closed! Open and easy to camp. My mistake - Sorry!

May 14th, 2017 Hotel Rancho Argueta

Clean hotel 4kms from the airport for $25 per night (tv, AC and private bathroom). $20 per night if you arrive after 6pm.

They let us store our van for $1.50 per day (parking at the airport is $3.75/day) in their secure carpark while we left El Salvador for 2 weeks.

May 9th, 2017 Puma Gas Station

This place has closed.
