Crossing from Brunei to Malaysia. Brunei was immigration and VES scanning was smooth. Into Malaysia we had to fill in a health declaration because of the corona virus and our temperature was measured.

February 6th, 2020 Purmana Hotel

Large hotel in the centre of town. Dated but large, comfortable room with nice view. Breakfast included. MYR 95.86 including tax. Few parking spots for large vehicles. Good Digi reception.

February 6th, 2020 Merapok

Crossing from Sabah to Sarawak. We had to fill in a declaration because of the corona virus, otherwise smooth crossing.

February 6th, 2020 Mengkalap

Border crossing from Malaysia to Brunei. Malaysian side was smooth, we got our CdP exit stamp in 5 minutes. Brunei took 30 minutes. Immigration and VES scanning went smoothly. Customs wanted to see our IDP and insurance. They asked about alcohol and tobacco. We had some beer (below the allowed limit for import in Brunei), but learned that the allowance is zero for transit. As we had already told them we were heading for Limbang (Malaysia) the beer was confiscated; we got an official document of that.

February 2nd, 2020 Gomantong Cave Parking

Nice and quiet place to stay in the forest with permission from the ticket office. The public toilet is open during the night.

February 2nd, 2020 Suang Noh Homestay

Good place with great view. Nice patio, kitchen, good parking, excellent wifi. MYR 80. Good Digi reception.

February 1st, 2020 Rian

Rian (+60 14 964 4881) organizes river cruises, jungle walks and night walks. He worked as a guide for one of the big lodges for seven years and now has started his own business. He is an excellent birder. For MYR 150 you rent a complete boat (the big lodges charge MYR 60 per seat on a 14 seat boat) with total flexibility for a two hour cruise.

We did two cruises, a jungle walk and a night walk with him. The second two hour cruise in practice lasted three hours, because he did not want to give up finding crocodiles (at the end we saw five).

We slept in our car next to his home (the place shown on the map) and used toilet and shower in his house. His mother provided meals as requested by us.

Highly recommended!

January 30th, 2020 Rainforest Discovery Center

Corner of the parking, very quiet at night. In the night the toilets in the visitor building are closed, but 50 meters or so after the entrance next to the lake are other toilets that aren't locked.

January 30th, 2020 UMW Toyota Motors

Because of a steering issue the front wheel bearings of our LC HZJ 79 needed to be replaced. They had immediately time to check the issue and started repairing within an hour. Although our model is not that common in Malaysia they had all required parts in stock. Their most senior engineer was assigned to the job. We were allowed to watch progress in the workshop all the time. The repair was made professionally and it looks like the issue has been resolved. Hourly rate was the equivalent of about EUR 20. In addition they did a general check and found and resolved some minor issues.

January 30th, 2020 Laundry 24/7

Laundry open 24/7. Cold washing MYR 5, drying MYR 5.

January 29th, 2020 Sunbay Hotel

We had a Superior Room (131.90) including taxes. Aged, but clean and comfortable room with airco, large TV and large bathroom. We chose it because it is behind the Toyota workshop where we had to leave our car for a night. Good Digi reception (LTE).

January 28th, 2020 Palm Café Parking

Parking of Viewing Platform B next to Palm Café. Make sure you ask permission from the café staff before you set up camp. Very quiet in the evening. Toilet with mandi that stays open at night. The restaurant closes after lunchtime. Good Digi reception (H+). Camping was free. We paid MYR 60 per person entrance fee plus MYR 10 camera fee.

January 27th, 2020 Crystal Hotel

Good parking space and quiet street, but the room itself is nothing special. A/C, TV. MYR 95 incl. tax. Good Digi reception. In retrospect the nearby Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah Rest House probably would have been a better choice.

January 25th, 2020 OYO Weng Bee Guest House

Small but complete, clean, well maintained room with airco, fan and TV. Good parking space. Possibility to sit outside. Good DiGi LTE. Good place to prepare your car for long term storage. MYR 72.85.

January 24th, 2020 Kaka Motel

Standard motel with a small kitchen in the room, airco and good parking; otherwise nothing special. MYD 140 tax and minimalistic breakfast included.

We initially intended to camp at the recreation area just before the bridge (5.08066° N, 115.54983° E) with toilets and showers from 08:00 to 22:00, but when we learned there would be a special celebration there until 02:00 we decided to move to the motel.

January 24th, 2020 CIQ Pandaruan

Border crossing from state Sarawak to state Sabah. This is a real immigration checkpoint with passport stamps. It became clear that we had 90 days for Sarawak, not Malaysia. When we entered Sabah we got 90 days again.

We crossed from Brunei to Malaysia. Took 10 minutes: VES scanned, passports stamped, CdP stamped. We still had the ICP. Nobody asked about the car.

January 23rd, 2020 Pantai Seri Penangan

Picnic area next to the beach. Level area. About 200 m northeast along the road is a reasonably well maintained toilet/shower block. Officially it is open 08:00-17:00, but we used it beyond these times.. The parking bays opposite the toilet building and the parking lot next to it are alternative campsites closer to the amenities. Free of charge. Good Progresif H+ reception.

January 23rd, 2020 Border crossing Malaysia-Brunei

We traveled from Malaysia to Brunei. The total process took about an hour, 15 minutes for Malaysia, 45 minutes for Brunei.

Immigration in both countries was done in a matter of seconds,we got 90 days in Brunei.

In Malaysia we showed the Carnet, nobody asked for the ICP. Malaysian customs spoiled a Carnet page.

In Brunei a superficious vehicle inspection was done. We then got a VES, a multiple vehicle entry document valid for 3 months. You can also create a VES yourself in advance on the internet. www.4ever2wherever.com gives details.
