July 27th, 2019 Diesel from bucket

Here you can get diesel and petrol. Don’t now which type of petrol. 9.20 per liter diesel

July 26th, 2019 old ESSO station.

Did not have diesel in both of the two gasstations next to eachother.

July 26th, 2019 Homestay Qurbonasayn

Nice homestay of friendly family. Daughter speaks English, but is only here for summer holiday. We slept in our RTT at the parking. Suitable for 1 maybe 2 cars. We paid 100 Somoni for good diner, breakfast, hot shower (although not much pressure) and pittoilet. Don’t know the price if you sleep inside, but might be around 160. Few minutes walking to the fortress. Beautiful at sunset!

July 25th, 2019 Parinen

They have a new sign, so (car) entry is easy to find. Owner speaks good English and is very friendly. Helped us finding a mechanic with a car bridge. We camped in our car on the parking. Unfortunately a group slept in the homestay and left at 5:00 after which two other drivers decided to start washing their cars at 5:15am right next to our car. They left at 8:00 after which it became quite again. Not a good night sleep. However, the owner was sorry about it, apologized and decided not to charge us anything. We think he will keep an eye out to prevent it from happening again. We had some bad luck, but would try our luck next time ;)

July 25th, 2019 'GAI' Pamir Vehicle Permit/Customs service

No problem to extend. Asked 150Somoni for 15 days. I told him that others paid 100 or nothing. He put a stamp for 15 extra days and when I asked why we should pay at all (since others didn’t) we could leave without paying. Seems like you pay a personal fee instead of official costs (also no receipt offered).

July 24th, 2019 amazing wild camp at the river

Beautiful place! Sheppard with goats at the field who said it was okay to camp. People passed by, but everybody left us alone. Some waved. Very tranquil spot.

July 23rd, 2019 large flat spot on hill

Quite spot, completely alone. However, no shelter with lots of wind at sunset and early night. We slept inside the car instead of our rooftop tent.

July 22nd, 2019 Bivouac with view Afghanistan

Cell phone mast nearby, so full reception. Makes the view a little bit less beautiful, but still stunning. In the evening and morning some kids of the nearby village visited us. Played around in the car and tent and left again. A big camel spider ran over our feet, so keep an eye on them. During the night some cows chose this spot to spend their night. Strange noises and wobbling of the car when the cows used us as a scratching pole as a result. However, not an issue, thats nature ;). In the end, still a good and beautiful spot!

July 21st, 2019 Restaurants along the river

Nice restaurants along the river. Chicken and beef shashlik were very good. Fresh, warm brown and white bread was served.

Along this part of the road there are multiple restaurants like this one.

July 19th, 2019 Great place at Iskander-Kul

Place not reachable since the road in the forest was flooded for at least 200m. Stayed at the ‘alternative spot’.

July 9th, 2019 toyota and kia service

We went to the Toyota dealer to replace our ignition lock that broke down. First day they had a look, but could not fix it immediately. We came back the second day, but they could not find the part anywhere in Iran. It was for an 18year old Land Cruiser 100, so I was already expecting that it would be hard to find. They tried to get the pin of the steering lock out. Also they installed a new ignition lock with key to replace a temporary screwdriver operated ignition. However, the new ignition lock only starts 1 out of 3 times. (They broke the screwdriver lock so we cannot replace that one while that one started every time). Even worse: the pin from the steering lock was not removed or fixated!

They already reinstalled the dashboard when I came to check the results. We found out the hard way the steering lock was not okay. On our way to the border the steering wheel locked on a roundabout luckily not causing an accident or even worse killing someone. We went back to the dealer and now they finally removed the pin and everything works. I had to put back the dashboard myself, because the were not able to do it themselves properly..

The manager speaks English and seems friendly and does the best he can. However, you don’t get a feeling of being taken seriously. Even when problems are clearly getting worse the manager laughs at you and is impolite. The lead mechanic is stubborn and did a shitty job. Especially saying that the steering lock is safe while it clearly wasn’t. So I would recommend to go somewhere else if the repair job quality is important. We did not like the way we were treated over here. Which is one of the first times in whole Iran that we had such a bad experience with people and the way they communicate and act. Unfortunately we had some more car trouble so we already had some experience with much nicer people who delivered way better quality.

July 1st, 2019 Arvin pro-fabrications

These guys are super! Cannot thank them enough. They helped us in multiple instances. Our car was overheating and they took out the radiator, cleaned it and reinstalled it. The same repair was tried by a Toyota dealer in Yerevan and they failed to find and fix the problem. Car was there for 1.5 days and we had to pay $100 while the first told it would be $150 max since the repair was slightly easier than expected.

But more important: on the way to the mechanic a car crashed into our back. I called Vrezh and he arranged with the driver to fix our car the same day and the other driver would pay. Without his translations and clever way of thinking this accident would have cost us hours, now it was solved within 30 minutes at the location and the bumper is fixed properly within 2 hours at his shop. While the other guys worked at the radiator problem.

Few days later we were in the north of Iran and the ignition lock broke of the car. We could not start or move the car and were stuck in the middle of nowhere in a forest. From 3pm until 1am in the night Vrezh helped us with translating and arranging as much as he could from 800km distance. He is caring for his ‘guests’ so much. So judge for yourself if $100 might be expensive. We thought it was a fair price and had a small guardian angel with us during our trip in Iran. Highly recommended!

June 22nd, 2019 Razhia Hotel

Nice hotel, clean with airco and parking. At the edge of town with lots of parking space. Ask the staff to enter trough the gate at the back. No height restrictions over-there. Manager and some staff speaks English, others just a little. However, all very friendly and helpful!
We payed 210.000Toman for a night in a double room incl. breakfast.

Bazaar and most sightseeing is 15min walk away.

June 21st, 2019 Sina Hotel

Nice hotel with friendly English speaking staff at reception. Parking space without height restriction. Rooms are clean and spacious. Bed is a little bit hard. This hotel was advised by host of Darya (and in Lonely Planet). We stayed here, because parking at Darya and Amin was not possible with our Land Cruiser with RTT due to height limitations.

Location is good. 18min walking to bazaar.

2380000 Rial per night for double room with bathroom incl. breakfast. Breakfast is simple, but sufficient. Some salad, bread, egg, juice, tea some jams and honey.

Wifi is relatively fast, but sometimes reception is not good. In rooms 60% of time working in lobby no problems.

June 19th, 2019 Hostel Samuel

Friendly owner invited us for lunch on arrival. Rooms are little bit packed with furniture, but basics are there. No AC, so it might be hot (windows open did not cool the place down a lot).

Good place to stay a night before crossing border. Whole family arrived in afternoon/evening. Children are friendly and speak some English too. Nice to have a little chat. End of the day tea with the family before going to bed. :)

June 17th, 2019 Zorac Akhbyur Hotel

Nice hotel with view over the city. Friendly English speaking owner. We payed 30.000 (was first 34.000) for 2 nights including breakfast. Restaurant in garden is nice for some food or draft beer in the afternoon, or take the car to city center and have dinner there. All rooms are different, room 6 has king size bed :).

June 7th, 2019 3GS Camping and B & B

Stayed for 5 nights (first thought to stay only 2). Sandra and Marty are super friendly and willing to help with everything. Place is as described in other comments: superb. Like a ‘bring your own bed luxury hotel’. Pool is great and kitchen, showers and toilets are perfect!

Nice to meet other overlanders and other travelers. Really enjoyed our time here!

June 5th, 2019 various flat ares

Large area with many possible locations. Deep tracks of tractors, so choose your path wisely (high clearance is welcome). Very calm night. Good spot!

June 4th, 2019 Haghpat Camping Kanchaqar

Great spot! Very friendly owner, nice BBQ place with a panorama view. We had thunder and rain, but it was super nice to see it from up here. In the morning lots of sunshine so the views were great again. Showers and toilets are clean.

May 4th, 2019 Remote spot in a stone quary

Remote spot, with 4x4 easily accessible. Some shepherds passed by waved and continued their path. A little around the corner of the entry path is a nice wall to hide from the wind and enjoy the sun. Nice quiet en clean spot.

May 3rd, 2019 magical ridge over red valley

Stayed for three nights. Wonderfull spot! Windy during thunder storm, but worth it with all balloons in the morning. Locals camp here in weekends. Friday night was little busy compared to evenings before at which we were with 2 overlanders in total.

April 30th, 2019 kervansaray camping-pansion

Spot at Tuz Gulu was covered with bullet shells so we went to this camping. Tahir is super friendly and in for a talk. Showed us around in the village and offered us tea and coffee. Camping is nice with basic facilities.

April 28th, 2019 Lake Iznik (Iznik Golu) near Nicaea

Nice lake view, popular by locals for picnic or late night drink. Lot of waste in the water and bushes. Jendarme came to check and told us (with google translate) that it was okay to stay. Gave us instructions to call 156 in case of emergency because of locals drinking alcohol and using drugs during the night at the lake. Some locals were having a drink, but we had no troubles with them. Frogs and birds can be noisy during the night. Acceptable to stay for a night.
