August 16th, 2020 Near Frog Falls

A great spot for the night. Lots of options off the gravel road for a small camper or tent. Beware lots of potholes as the road goes on, although first 4km are fairly well maintained.

August 14th, 2020 Near the Dam Free Camp

Great, quiet spot for tents or RVs! Has a very small amount of road noise. There seems to be good fishing here, too.

May 29th, 2020 Backus Woods Conservation Area

We adored this location. Getting in off the road is a little tight for our 23ft RV but there is great turn around room once you reach the parking area. Very quiet, very little road noise, and lots of birds in the morning. By the early morning we heard two cars pull in for early morning hikes but everyone was very quiet and respectful. Attached to a great trail network. Loved it here and would stay again.

April 14th, 2020 Hamilton Mountain Waste Station

$8.50 to dump the RV. Most confusing dump we’ve ever done with a lot of guidance from all the people working at this dump, recycling centre. Including making us back up when we didn’t want to. Weird because we know our rig best...

Entrance is off of Upper Ottawa St, then drive across the weighted scale to pay, then loop back to the corner where there is a little booth and the dumping spot.

Overall a totally fine experience.

March 15th, 2020 Tie Fork Rest Area

Nice, easily accessible, level spot. Has a fenced-in pet area. The train goes by at night, but we drove all day so we slept like the dead!

March 7th, 2020 Mesa verde Nationalpark (outside In BLM)

A great spot for an overnight. Arrive in the light because the road in has some huge gouges from when someone drove in when it was wet. If it has been dark we might not have felt as confident navigating past this. The site itself was awesome, no one bothered us, and it was only 4km to Mesa Verde in the morning!

February 29th, 2020 Shell Station Propane

RV Propane Available on side of shell station - just ask inside!

February 23rd, 2020 Pull-off near Great Basin

A simple pull-out off the north side of Hwy 50. No signage for it so keep a careful eye out for it as you drive up. No shelter from the road. There was little traffic after dark so road noise wasn’t an issue. There would be room for a few large vehicles here. The site is fairly level. Tents would be visible so use your best judgement if renting. AT&T service was functional (2 bars). We stopped here instead of the BLM spots nearby because we had no service at either Sacramento Pass or Baker Archeological Site, but those are also good options if you don’t need a cell signal.

February 22nd, 2020 Stokes Castle

A great spot surrounded by many mountain ranges so there are some beautiful views. The road up had some patches of ice.

Arrived at top with no issues and weren’t joined by anyone all night. A few people came up in the morning to take some photos. We loved this place and would stay again. Especially since it is beside the only gas in town (and only gas for miles which was very expensive. Fuel up before you get to the middle of Nevada!!).

February 21st, 2020 Walmart - Martell, Ca

Very quiet. The edge isn’t *perfectly* level but we made it work. A great spot for an easy night of sleep!

February 16th, 2020 FR6S15, Sierra National Forest

Easy enough to find after dark. Level. Had reasonable Verizon and AT&T service (about 2 bars). A few off-roaders went by in the AM. We had no trouble with a 23’ RV.

February 15th, 2020 Outside the entrance to Kings Canyon

Nice sunset view and pretty quiet after dark. No trouble finding a level spot. Good Verizon, no AT&T.

February 8th, 2020 Tortoise Rock Casino - Twentynine Palms

Pros:
- VERY close to Joshua tree visitor centre and park entrance
- Easy to find
- Easy to check into with help of kind, welcoming staff
- Safe to stay overnight
- Don’t have to use casino
- Washrooms inside

Cons:
- Smoking inside building might give a non smoker an all night headache after registering with security and force you to change and shower afterwards.
- There are no level spots in the approved parking section.
- Music plays from the casino all night so you might wake up periodically to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”
- Generally a loud place with people driving by loudly or otherwise doing things that aren’t conducive to sleep
- Even with all the blinds closed the light coming into the windows is very bright, like a small sun

February 4th, 2020 Gravel Lot by Shell

Large gravel lot beside Shell station in Baker. Many large 18wheelers were present and several other RVs. Nothing fancy or beautiful but it is possible to pull far enough away from the road to have a quiet night. It was easy to find a level spot and the lot is big rig friendly but probably not tent friendly.

We initially tried the park in town but felt concerned that as people not travelling with kids that our presence there might make locals feel uncomfortable. This was a good alternative for us.

January 31st, 2020 Marina / Boat launch parking

Stayed here three nights with no issues. Each morning a park ranger came by to clean the “fish cleaner” station (which some fishermen used overnight) with a pressure washer - it’s loud but obviously we are allowed to be here as no one has bothered us. No issues overnight except a few folks driving by. Not a perfectly level parking lot but the marina parking is WAY worse and unpaved. We would stay here again.

January 16th, 2020 Free spot close to I-10 outside Benson

A weird spot to spend the night. We arrived after dark and were able to use the GPS to get us to the entrance road. We weren’t bothered all night, and the sound of the train is the distance was fine. We are 24’ long and when we reached the portion of the road where it dips down with huge potholes we stopped and struggled to turn around. Not sure if we reached the right spot but it was definitely not possible to go down the hill so it’s all we had. An OK spot in a pinch but I wouldn’t want to stay here again if we didn’t need to. Beware: road also has some big erosion on it so the sides drop away quickly. Go very slowly and use lots of light/caution.

January 15th, 2020 Picnic Area

A good spot for an easy overnight. When we pulled in Border Patrol was camped out but they didn’t bother us at all. Beautiful views in the morning.

January 11th, 2020 Picnic Area roadside

Beautiful overnight spot. Gorgeous morning views and very little noise overnight - with the exception of the occasional car driving by.

December 2nd, 2019 Bay St Louis N Beach Road

Awesome spot. The police came through at 10pm but didn’t bother us. We parked in the shorter lanes furthest from the washrooms to leave spots for boat trailers in the morning. It is worth getting there for the sunset!

December 1st, 2019 Navarre Boat Ramp Parking Lot

Called the local Walmart to see if they would allow overnight parking and they said no but recommended this parking lot. We slept overnight along with another RV and were not interrupted. Some signs that say no overnight parking but no one bothered us and we stayed most of the next day as well. Wind off the ocean was vicious overnight and we didn’t sleep very well because of the shaking. We’d stay here again because the location was good but not for very long and only to visit the beach and pier! A ton of people were walking their dogs along this path throughout the day so it seems like a great location for those with pets.

November 28th, 2019 Buckhorn Hunt camp

Great free spot! We stayed for a few days. AT&T service was good. The access road is sand and has some holes so consider your ground clearance (we were fine with about 8”). It was about 1/4 full with hunters. We heard some gun shots during the day but felt safe where we were, but wouldn’t go for a hike during hunting season. We’d stay again.
