We wanted to boondock in the desert between San Ignacio and Santa Rosalia, but it seems to be tightly controlled due to the cave paintings. We were told by a couple people to just camp at the beach.

Coming down the big hill on the highway before Santa Rosalia we spotted a web of tracks leading to the shore. We asked a local loading gravel beside the road and he said camping was no problem. (He also said fishing was good and mentioned ceviche.. )

We took a road through the old (?) airport turned racetrack grounds and just wound our way toward the beach. There look to be plenty of options out here, but the area also seems to be a popular place to dump trash.

We parked where the road we followed ended between a wash and the sea. Lots of big rocks so we camped about 100 yards from the beach. Very quiet night with neat views of the mining operations in the distance.
