Taller Mecánico Pelayo.
Calle 12 C #7-14, Pasto. Two blocks away from Estadio Libertad.
We were having engine problems and went straight to the Renault in Pasto, after two days of assessing the vehicle they sent us to taller Pelayo. Mr Pelayo is very knowledgeable on diesel engines. The parts we needed are not commercialized in Colombia so they were able to find workarounds so we could continue on.

This is the most awesome coolest off grid camping I’ve stayed at. There is literally nothing here accept a sweet fire pit but it’s just amazing. The road in is not great but take your time it’s short

The last curve opens a paradise. Short cut grass, small river and the stunning Laguna Negra near by. A strange fauna. The track from the Estanzi Catal is tricky: deep water, narrow rock formations on both sides, sharp curves, only for cars with high clearance, not broader than 2m. We made it with a Landcruiser Camper. A few tour operators visit this place, but in the evening it is very quiet. Along the rock wall no wind. No facilities, not for Big Rigs. Crossing with other vehicles may become difficult.

4runner/rooftent this gas station is a better bet for parking up with some discretion. lots of empty space behind the garage and facilities as listed below. no showers that we saw.

4 runner/ rooftent. the only parking up appears to be right outside the shop... no dark corners! sparkly bathrooms and good Wi-Fi but we camped at the petrobras 1km away as better rooftop tent space.

Nice spot to spend a night surrounded by short trees for privacy from road. We didn’t see any people or cattle, also not too many flies. Doesn’t cool off much at nigh in May...

Very nice modern western style place where you can enjoy a selection of pastries, fresh juices, salads, Quiche, ice cream and more. There’s an outdoor seating area as well as an AC regulated inside restaurant. Free WiFi. Enjoy!

Reasonable hotel on the other side of the road to the beach but only 50m walking distance. has a nice pool and safe parking for cars and motorbikes 100 q per night with fan 150 q with air conditioning . like everything here busy on the weekends and quiet during the week. easy walking distance to many restaurants and shops. more of a family place than a party place

Cool place to stay. I spent more than a week and enjoyed it a lot. "Pablo" is a very nice guy and he takes care of you and your needs. Public transportation (bus) stops at the main gate. So easy access to town. This place is highly recommended. Rem.: In case you have a "real" big rig (wide 2.50m) you might not get through the doors. But you can stay in front and use all the amenities incl. electricity, wifi etc. So don't hesitate to give it a try...

Only the Wind Knows

This was also our first border in 5 years using fixers. Their fees were low, they were helpful and well worth the cost in our opinion.

Departing Sudan:
Total exit fees were 554 SP - about $18 using black market rate of 30 to 1 plus we paid 500 to Mazar. We contacted Mazar the night before. He said his fee is “whatever you want”. We got through in 1 hour, 15 minutes.

Entering Egypt:
Jamal approached us at the border. He was the only fixer there. He’s a kind person. Not a wheeler dealer kind of guy. He told us to expect to pay 1500 EP ($85) in fees on top of the fees we paid to enter (180 EP for 2 people and a 4x4 plus 60 EP in health fees). Jamal said his fee was 100 EP. We paid him 200 ($11). So our total cost was about 1950 EP or $110

We had a crazy situation where the immigration computer system went down and we had to sleep at the border along with 6 buses of people. (Don’t worry, we were told this has never happened before) On day 2, Jamal came at 7am to continue the process even though he knew customs probably wouldn’t show up until 9:30am. Even an Arabic speaking Sudanese family was using his services to speed things along.

Other things to note:
It is possible to change your leftover Sudanese pounds at one of the two cafes on the Egypt side. (These are comfortable spaces with some air conditioning and clean toilets). The rate is not great, but it’s the only option.

This border did not accept the Egyptian Evisa which we applied for, printed out and paid for online. Immigration claimed they did not have our evisa in their system. We used the correct government website, not a scam site. Jamal said they never accept the Evisa even though they should. Just like they won’t accept Comesa insurance and you must buy additional insurance. It’s quick and easy to get a visa at the border. You pay $25 (USD only) at the bank.
