Description

Warning! Some pull offs are very soft sand and vehicles can get easily stuck, even in dry conditions. Had to get towed out!

This is a scenic 28-mile dirt road that winds through colorful desert formations. There are numerous pull offs suitable for camping, and if your vehicle is OK for exploring the side roads, you will find even more. This spot is near the north end of the drive, an easy pull off with a big space, fire ring, nice views, and good TMobile coverage. No facilities. The road condition was good when I was here - some washboard, but good overall. However, they warn against trying it in wet weather or after storms, and say it is maintained annually. You can call the Socorro BLM office to check on conditions. Free.

Latest Check-Ins

Nice scenic road, in very good shape right now. The marked spot is easy to reach on top of a hill, exposed to the wind. Lots of options around, a little further there's a road steeply going south downwards the valley. 4x4 needed there and no cell service in the valley. Super quiet. Hiking around highly recommended!

At a spot just before the one listed, it was already taken. Road is washboard as mentioned so 5mph was my top speed after turning onto the Byway. Quite busy on a weekend in January, lots of atvs and bikes. Hoping it quiets down later as the dust is a problem. Beautiful views, look forward to taking some hikes. Wind is rocking my skoolie so be prepared for it. Definitely wouldn't come if rain was in the forecast. Decent Verizon signal.
