Description

Both companies working at the moment.
Takes 5-6h to Caleta Gonzalo.
Reservation needed at least in high season but seems possible to put you on a waiting list.

It says on the ticket to arrive 2h ahead, boarding one hour before departure.

There is a heated room with couches where people can sleep on even during the day. There's a big tv and tables. You can also stay in the car. They sell some empanadas and drinks on the ferry. No wifi but there are power outlets at the bow of the ship.

Very easy experience! We booked the tickets one week in advance and paid around 55US$ for a van and two people. Arrived there 2 hours before the departure and waited in a long line. A guy came, checked our licence plate and said we are good to board the ferry. We didn’t need to show our ticket. On the ferry you can sit in your car if you want.

Report Check-In

Sometimes the ferry schedule differs. We booked for a day that there was only 1 ferry, leaving at 6pm. it didn't leave until after 8pm. But it delivered us straight to Caleta Gonzalo, no bimodal so that was nice! Not sure I'd this happens often but it's something to look out for.

Book online 1-3 days before on https://www.barcazas.cl/barcazas/
For our Hyundai h100 (camioneta 4m8 length) we paid 51’000 pesos. It included both ferry from here to Caleta Gonzalo.
First ferry at 10am (it’s good to come 1:30-2h before to wait in the line). Around 4h
10 minutes drive to the second ferry
Second ferry at 2pm for 30-40 minutes

The reservation online is directly for both ferries

Report Check-In

You have to be at the ferry 2 hours before departure.

Report Check-In

For two people and our minivan (camioneta size, about 5m) 51 000 CLP.
It is offseason, website said there was no space for vehicles anymore so we just showed up in the office at 8am and got in anyway.
First ferry took 4h.
Then we drove 10km, about 15min.
The second ferry took 40min and it left a soon as all cars arrived, no waiting.

Report Check-In

Two people, one van was 80 000.
Boarding time was at 9:00, got there at 8, boarded at 9:30 left at 10

Report Check-In

Book your ferry in advance in peak season! Especially in february ferries are full. If you cant get any ticket try to come to the prt early. They try to put you on the ferry

Report Check-In

We purchased tickets at the Somarco ticket office around 8pm. They only had tickets for a ferry leaving two days later. No problem! However, we shot our luck at the dock for the 9pm departure on the same evening and got on! There was enough space for 3 or 4 more cars, too. Beautiful sunset!

Report Check-In

We didn’t buy tickets in advance but showed up at 8:30 am when they opened and we were able to load our bikes on the ferry.

Report Check-In

Just so say that Autral is working again. See my comment on the “Somarco” icon for details.

Ok just a quick hot tip for those taking this ferry: when you don’t get on the first one that you want (which will most likely happen unless you are on some type of well kept schedule and make reservations ha!) and you get your tiny piece of paper with your waiting number on it for tomorrow morning’s ferry-go to the office the next day and present your tiny number for the actual ticket to get on. Check in with the office. Make sure you do this so you’re not running around last minute!

Report Check-In

Somarco is currently working but Astral has stopped for the season. we payed 40.000 for a vehicle with the driver and a passenger . we got the 9 am and at 10.10am we are still here waiting for more cars to load. the ferry is clean and big . warm.

Report Check-In

We arrived shortly after the morning ferry left and went to the ticket office. We asked if we needed to buy a ticket for the afternoon and they told us no, to just be at the front of the line an hour before. We did that. Two other motos arrived and did the same. The ferry ended up leaving without us, and someone came to tell us that we could all reserve for the morning. The whole situation was super fishy, seeing as they just told us this morning that motos couldn’t reserve. We felt we could of fit on the afternoon ferry and they just wanted us to be on the more expensive ferry. Anyways, we were stubborn and went and found another way across. We did the Pichicolo-Ayacara-Caleta Gonzalez Route, we had an awesome adventure, and that route only cost us $3,000 in total. We posted updated info under the icons for those.

Prices for non-residence:
Morning Ferry (10:30am)
13,400 Moto
8,900 per person.
Total: 31,200 ($47US/$62CAD)

Afternoon Ferry (3:00pm)
8,400 Moto
5,600 for pillion passenger.
Total: 14,000 ($21US/28CAD)

We didn't have a reservation, so we went to the Somarco office on Friday. They have a list where you can put your name on for the date you would like to travel. You'll get a number (depending on how many names are already on the list) and you have to be at the ferry dock at the time of boarding. If your lucky there's enough space left and you can get on board. We where lucky and could board as nr 10 (out of the 11 extra vehicles that went on board)!!! Very good service! The trip with Somarco is absolutely worth it!

Ferry from navieraustral.cl, leaving from Hornopiren to Caleta Gonzalo.

Times: 9am and 3pm

Today they even sent an extra ferry at 8pm to pick up everyone (about 40 cars) waiting for the next day ferry service. I don't think this is a normal occurance though.

Another company, Somarco, runs another ferry that runs once a day.

Report Check-In

To summarize all the comments below...
(In high season) There are TWO different companies you can book with for a ferry to coleta gonzalo.
The first company is called Somarco and they have one ferry a day at 10:30am which costs around 33,000CLP for a car (including drivers) plus however many passengers you have. This trip goes through the fjords and then you have to get off drive for a bit and take another ferry to CG.

The other company is called ‘Transportes Austral’. This trip is only one boat and goes straight to CG but does not go through the fjords. They have 2 ferry’s per day that go to CG. One at 9am and one at 3pm. The one at 9am costs 53,000CLP while the one at 3pm costs around 33,000CLP (including driver). They’re the same ferry and trip..

You can book with both companies online at their websites if they’re working.

If you don’t book online you can drive up and wait by the ramp while they’re loading and ask the people working if there’s room on the ferry.. at the very end right before the boat leaves they will let you know if you can get on or not. Chances are you can get on one of the three boats that day or the next day so hopefully no te preocupes if you didn’t book.

We took the ferry from Somarco, good, modern, only one year old. With Somarco you go with the first ferry to Leptepu, drive for 10 km to the other side or catch the bus if you are biking or by foot and take an other ferry which is included in the ticket for 30 min to Caleta Gonzalo.

Report Check-In

I wanted to book online because we are traveling in high season. Everytime I got an error with the payment. I emailed them, and told me I can pay during checkin at the day of departure because I’m an international traveler. The ferry departes at 09:00 but checkin starts at 07:30. We paid 8900 pesos per person (2 people) and 53800 for a small campervan (same price as a normal car), so 71600 in total. The ferry went on the west side of Volcán Huequi, so we only needed 1 ferry.

You should book in advance and check for any changes at www.navieraustral.cl or call +56 600 401 9000.

We took the ferry from SOMARCO. You could buy the tickets at their shop next to the ferry port. Van costs 33600CLP (incl. driver). Each extra person costs 5600CLP. They go through the fiord. Very beautiful.

Report Check-In

since 1st December 2018, prices are more expensive than before : 9600 Clp/p and 9600 per bike. only one boat leaving at 9 am to Caleta Gonzalo

I caught the somarco boat, very comfortable and professional and a beautiful ride through the fjords, Cafe on board. at the moment it runs once a day leaving at 10:30 a.m. from hornopiren, the cost was $8,700 for me and my motorbike

Report Check-In

There are 2 companies who run ferry transport here to Caleta Gonzalo. We took Transporte Austral. The other one is called Somarco. After talking to the woman in the coffee shop we heard Somarco is way better (wifi, panoramic view, elevators,...) and has the same price. Somarco goes through the Fjords and Transporte Austral doesn't. It should be the same price she said, but we couldn't check. Website: www.barcazas.cl

Report Check-In

There is currently only one ferry at 9:00am (times probably change in high season, please update accordingly). Bookable online at www.taustral.cl
Vehicle price including driver is 33.600CLP, every additional person is 5.600 CLP.
Be aware that there is a second company in town called "Somarco" which runs a ferry that currently leaves at 10:30am. If Transporte Austral is booked out, you might get lucky there.
Note: Transporte Austral does NOT issue refunds to foreigners. So check both companies first before you buy a ticket.

Report Check-In

only one ferry leaving from Hornopiren to Caleta Gonzalo at 9 am. leaving from Caleta Gonzalo to Hornopiren at 1 pm. taustral.cl

Report Check-In

In November 2018 there is one Transporte Austral ferry from Hornopiren sailing directly to Caleta Gonzalo at 9am but the classic 2-stage serivce is run currently by Somarco (www.barcazas.cl).
It is also worth to note that there are major road works from Caleta Puelche to Hornopiren so the section can take up to 3 hours with traffic being stopped for a long time

Report Check-In

this location is the actual boat not the offices. we have a long sprinter van but we paid for a camioneta and the guy at the dock tried to radio the office to ask us to pay more but no I've answered. definitely worth just eating the car/van price . we also paid for our two kids but the guy just said "2 people?". it would be easy to just not pay for extra people if you feel inclined.

Report Check-In

we were going to take the afternoon ferry on a Sunday and because the Puerto montt office being closed we just went there. arriving at 2.36pm we just saw the ferry leave. for some reason on Sundays in March it is an hour earlier. 😐
at the office on the corner they have power and you can take the ethernet cable from the unused kiosk to have fast Internet with a laptop.

two ferries right now: 10:30 and 15:30
reservation needed, but I saw plenty people getting their tickets at the local office.

passenger: 5.600
motos: 8.400
autos: 33.600
bicycle: 5.600

drivers of motorized vehicles are included in price.

Report Check-In

Nothing to add other than if you book your tickets in Puerto Montt you can get the regular auto rate. We just said we had a camioneta and they didn’t ask any further questions. No problems boarding. Good luck!

Report Check-In

Current price 33600 peso's per car including driver, plus 5600 per passenger. Ferry leaves at 10.30AM and 15.30PM.
ATTENTION : Route n7 - Careterra Austral is actually (january 2018) blocked for 9 km around Villa Santa Lucia due to a huge mud slide. Impossible to pass. Road repair is going on. Going South, you can take a free ferry between Chaiten and Puerto Raul Marin Balmaceda. This ferry leaves in Chaiten at 23.00PM, takes 7 hours. Please check situation on Careterra Austral before heading South!

Report Check-In

Current price (Oct 2017) is by lineal meter for ANYTHING over 5m...or so we were told except for the fact that we caught other longer pick-up trucks paying the "autos y camionetas" price. Even though we paid the "autos y camionetas" price for the previous ferry, hefe got quite heated and upset when we said we were a truck (we are a truck and camper) and not a "bus, camiones, equipos de arrastre" as noted on their wall as those who have to pay by lineal meter. As a result our cost increased by $23,500. Not happy but can't argue when you don't speak the language properly (big sigh).
In case anyone wants to hide extra people, it's possible. Passports are registered (for emergencies if ferry sinks I assume) however tickets are only checked once (when you board first ferry - the 3.5hr one) and no one checks the vehicles. Once you are on ferry, everyone can come out.

38 500.- for 2 with a van - Toyota HiAce. Driver doesn't pay. Passenger 5000.- CHP. We slept in the nearby parking. Office open at 8.30am during winter months and only 1 ferry per day supposedly at 9.30am. Have added a photo of the pricelist for reference. It's not 3600.- like mentioned in a previous comment....i wish!

Only one ferry this time of year. Leaves at 10:30AM, must arrive at 9:30. Office is open 8-12:30, 3-6:30

Report Check-In

We arrived at 3:30 the day before and Bought the tickets for the next day as the ferry left exactly at 10:30 am. 3 hours ride then we waited 2 hours in the middle section for the ferry as they were too small and couldn't fit all the cars. Finally we arrived at 5;15 - we paid 56,680 for our 6.8mt truck withcamper . They charge per 7,600 per mt. - nothing for our dog / no wifi but enough outlets to do some work

Report Check-In

Before going on the ferry you need to change your reservationprints for tickets at the little building where the ferry departs. Our car is 5,35 meter long but we took the risk and payed for a car up to 5 meters, no problem, they don't measure!

Report Check-In

Today we took the ferry at 16.30 (2 other ferries at 8.30 and 11.30 AM.
Price: 33.000 for a vehicule plus driver and 5500 for an extra person. We bought our tickets online, the day before (the earlier boates were already full).
The ferry took us to Leptepu. Then we had to drive 10 km to a second ferry which took us to Caleta Gonzalo.

Report Check-In

We arrived on the day-of at 9am to buy a ticket. Boat boarded at 11:30 and left at 12:30 (wasn't clear how many more boats ran that day). Paid 38500 for 4Runner and 2 people.

Report Check-In

I like to underline what was mentioned earlier.
Get your ticket early, but get on the ferry late, so u can leave the second ferry early!

Report Check-In

One more thing, the second ferry is smaller than the first one, so if it is busy and you don't want to wait one hour for the second ferry (that runs twice to take all the people from the first boat to the final point), make sure you are one of the first ones to leave the first boat so you're in the first 'batch'. Meaning you should be one of the last people to board the first ferry.
The wait was very pleasant, though! Beautiful views and a little beach.

Report Check-In

At the moment the ferry leaves at 11.30 and some days at 18.00 as well. Check the website taustral.cl. As mentioned, boarding starts an hour before. Office opens at 9.00 and closes around 18.00/18.30 (when we were there on a Sunday). We bought tickets for the same day without reservation, but it was quite busy, so a reservation wouldn't be a bad idea if you want to be sure. 33000 for the car (incl. driver) and 5500 for an extra person.

Report Check-In

Pickup , one driver 33,000. Had to wait 20h due to bad weather south. Free wifi on main square GOB office, red building. Reaches car, on all night ;-)

Report Check-In

No reservation for us, but it's low season. 7950 for a motorbike (which include the conductor) and 5350/passenger. At the period only one departure, at 10h30 (from Hornopiren).
Good quality, big room with a TV and nice seats. It took us 5h30 for the trip. The ferry avoid the stop at Leptepu and went directly to Galeta Gonzalo!

Report Check-In

We would recommend making an advance booking if you can. We came on the ferry from south to north. The loading at Leptepu of the vehicles with reservations took a bit longer than scheduled, so the boat left without the standby vehicles, even though there was plenty of space on board for them.

Report Check-In

strongly recoment to book before. we didn't and so we had towait 24h and then we were lucky to be the last on the second ferry on this day.
