Description

This is the basecamp of Piedra Grande in Pico de Orizaba National Park. Elevation is at 4,200 m / 13,898 ft. It's very cold especially at night. There are couple of huts used by climbers but you can also pitch your tent or sleep in your car/camper. Pit toilets. No water or food available. Depending from what town you come from, the road may or may not be suitable for big rigs. 4x4 highly recommended. The road from Coscomatepec is very long and gnarly but it's still fun and very scenic (if weather permits). From Tlachichuca is equally long (3 hours to the basecamp) but the road is apparently in better condition however we did not drive that way. It's very important to be able to back track as is easy to get disoriented and take a wrong dirt road. A slow ascend is important to avoid altitude sickness.

Absolutely incredible ride on a motorcycle to a 14000 ft Basecamp complete with a shelter for people who are climbing the rest of the way through the 18700 foot summit. On a motorcycle you may not find better riding in all of Mexico! it is entirely possible to ride up here camp for the night and ride back down the next day however this shelter is nothing more than a roof and wind protection. You would need a good sleeping bag and obviously food. With that said you can get lost for days up here in this mountain range exploring and off-roading. absolutely incredible!

Well the road from Tlachichuca is definitely a challenge. It’s pretty technical, and you will need all the goodies your car can supply. But it’s more than amazing to drive up here... and reach here. If u love mountains go for it! Be aware of altitude sickness.

Report Check-In

We came from the west (Miguel Hidalgo y Castillo) and had two hours to the base camp. The road is very steep, dusty and washed out. We recommend only 4x4. We followed maps.me, one way on the northern route and back on the southern route. The southern route is shorter but steeper.

We didn't stay at the basecamp but we did drive there in our 4Runner so we could hike Pico Orizaba (only to 5000m). From Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the last tiny village before the dirt road starts, it's about 9 mi to the basecamp. It took us about 1 hour. It's very dusty and requires high clearance at parts. We used Maps.me and followed the track to the north to get to the basecamp. The views from the basecamp of Pico Orizaba and the surrounding valley and distant volcanoes is worth the slow drive.
