Description

This is Paradise! Famous for its Scarlet Macaws (Guacamaya, Ara Macao) this beautiful little village is teeming with all kinds of tropical birds and both, Howler and Spider Monkeys. People are incredibly friendly, you can walk around wherever you want, and if you keep your eyes and ears open it’s almost impossible not to fill your SD card with some of your best shots ever.
There are two established campgrounds at each end of the community (Biohidroselva and El Retoño), both offering a couple of campsites overlooking the river, additional ones behind, basic but clean facilities (and cabañas for rent) and go for a mere MEX$50 pppn. Wherever you stay: This is a first class birding and ‘monkeying’ destination and well in the top ten of our worldwide list of supreme wildlife photo spots.

Latest Check-Ins

As described, this is an AMAZING place to see spider monkeys, howler monkeys & scarlet macaws in the wild! The property itself is absolutely beautiful, full of exotic plants & colourful flowers. Such an interesting place to explore!

Both campgrounds in town are still open & both are a great option. We ended up at Biohidroselva only because the other site was a bit busier (during Semana Santa), but the staff at El Retoño were super friendly & the river access is a bit better. 50pp, including showers at Biohidroselva, which is a nice way to cool off before bed (showers cost extra at Retoño).

We also ate at the restaurant within Las Guacamayas, which is excellent & a much better deal than expected. We each ordered a ceviche tostada for 50p (made from local river fish) and it was enough for dinner, after eating quite a lot of the free chips and salsa!

As described ! walk in the community or in the eco-tourism center (high-end cabañas & expensive restaurant) at 7-8am or just anytime and you should at some point spot monkeys, parrots, toucans and other birds. At least that's what we experienced. Boat tour from the eco-tourism center is expensive but nice, but don't expect to see more than by just walking around. They also offer walking tours in the ejido protected forest. No cell signal, as everywhere in this area, wifi by the hour from shops.
