Description

This is a fairly large site with plenty of space for the Land Rover and Caravan. Usual toilet and shower on the main site. Plenty of lion calls at night!
The campground comprises 10 sites set on a horseshoe layout well spaced out. The lions appear to visit Campsite 01 fairly regularly, great if you don’t want to site out at night. In fact the lions use the campground access road as a route to their hunting ground. Note some of the sites have ablutions 20m away from the cleared campsite, not great when you know lions are around. We were the only people at the campground 5 of the 6 nights we stayed. MASCOM GRPS available here.

Khutse 1 is our favourite campsite as it is the closest to the pan and waterhole and a regular route for lions at night. We had lions walk through each night and had no other campers for 3 nights. It was magical! However, the only tree for shade has now fallen over so no shade at all but didn’t bother us too much as we did game drives the entire day anyways.

Our last night on a Saturday night was unpleasant though - stay well clear of any of the Khutse campsites over weekends as locals take over the place and play loud music and make noise all night long. Rather camp at Moleswe or Maharusele to avoid it.

You will need reservations before you enter the park as they are managed by a 3rd party: Bigfoot tours. Cost is by campsite, then per person and age of each person (children 6 and under are free) but it can be confusing and add up quickly. Call them on the phone as they rarely reply to emails. Each site has a pit toilet and hoisted-bucket shower. Ensure you have enough fuel as NOTHING is available locally. The water hole has been damaged by elephants but a new bore hole was added behind the damaged one. Leopard Ecology has some of the lions tagged with collars, but they are very much wild. We saw a pride of five lions, one with a collar. Weekends, especially 3-day weekends can find every campsite booked, but there is some overflow space near the South Gate. Bore hole water is also available at the gate. Very rustic but very scenic. Thoroughly enjoyed our 3 days there.

Stayed the night in Khutse 1. We were the only people in the park so felt very wild and isolated. There is a leopard that comes through camp that seems used to people. It hangs around in the evening and comes quite close, not scared of humans so be careful with children.
Closest site to the watering hole but no direct view from camp.

We stayed here for 2 nights. Everything as said before. At this time of the year, grass can be quite high which is a challenge for game viewing. But could hear the lions roaring all night, waterhole is open and nice to visit, lots of birds.
