Description

Camping near the lake is no longer permitted. But camping at the refugio is nice too, great view of lake and the volcano.

When open the refugio has Baños, showers, indoor seating.

When the refugio is closed there are two bivy huts that are open all year round. Also possible to camp/car camp in the garage just below the refugio.

Latest Check-Ins

We slept here two nights. The ranger was only on the first day and for one hour. We trekking to the top of Cerro Wayle we went up from the right side and went down to the other side. If you do it calmly you are away from 5 to 6 hours .
In the backside of the Ranger House is a water tap.

Nice refugio, but it was closed when we arrived at 2pm for a lunchbreak. Would be a cold and windy night
outside, without entry to the house....

Perfect spot for cyclists (I’d also recommend this road, it’s a great route!). Refugio closed but cabins unlocked. We used the one to the right as you face the door as it seemed in slightly better condition, but they are both clean. We set up our tent inside as we thought there might be rodents around and the cabins aren’t completely sealed, but we heard nothing aside from some birds that live in the walls, and they went to bed when the sun set. Water from tap or directly from river is sparkling clear. Quiet night out of the wind.

The refugio huts are open all year round, no padlocks. If the gate is shut cyclists will have no problem going around it. Didn’t see a padlock hanging off that either though.

Refugio itself was shut. Possibly only used during skiing season or for the rangers?? Unsure.

No baños or duchas when it’s closed.

Small meltwater stream flowing to one side, I assume normally this is flowing? Unsure as this year has been a drought year, the Laguna is very dry.

What a wonderful view from the refugio ! Incredible sunset ! We stayed here for 2 days and 2 nights so quite and peaceful ! Nobody here, the gate was opened but no rangers we only talked with a gaucho passing by to see his cows and coats ! A bit windy but not too much
No problem for big rig, nice walks around, the volcano Tromen very impressive ! For me one of the top ten to be seen in Argentina if you like our beautiful Earth ! Enjoy

Report Check-In

The gate on the road to go to the Refugio was closed.

Very nice and impressiv (volcano) drive if comming from the north to get to the lagoon. Water is low and not so many birds. We made a picknick at the lake (you can still drive down but are not allowed to camp at the shore) and continued.

This place saved us. We came during april and at night it got to -8•C and during there was the Sonda pwind which made it almost impossible to open the door of our car. In the refugio we found a small cottage perfect for pitching a tent inside and a stone garage which we chose to sleep in as we prefer sleeping in our car. We were very nicely protected from the wind and the cold. The next morning we woke up at sunrise and the lagoon was completely frozen! We fixed the location coordenates.

Report Check-In

The refugio was closed, no notice when they open. So no toilets, showers etc. for us.
Place is not suitable for tents, except if you like your bed uneven and rocky.
To the side there are little huts, two of which were open. We used one as tent substitute - ok for one night.

I was told still possible to camp but stayed in one of the Refugio huts. Ranger brought matress. Otherwise lots of nail heads sticking out the floor. Nice view, free. Seems to be mostly used on skies in winter. Correct GPS is -37.078922, -70.118519 -- check MapsMe.
