For now, consider the road washed-out unless you have 4wd. At the end of the agricultural grid you can see on the satellite view, recent heavy rain cut a sandy trough across the road.

Restaurant with fresh seafood, fair prices and a great view. We just got here but plan to stay a few days if it rains. We have a van and the road we took is pasable but not easy. We got stuck once and had to use our sand tracks. We'll check for an alternate route out. Looking forward the volcano hike.

Great place to stay at, lovely family and totally safe.
Dogs on the property were very friendly to our Golden. Especially the mid-size black one 🙂

Would recommend to watch the Youtube Vid about the place here as well. Good info and also recommendations how to get in/out.

We are pulling an 18ft trailer. In via the road following Google Maps was fine, but there is a 100 ft tall sand dune you‘re coming down. We‘ll take the road depicted on the iOverlander map out, although it might be slightly longer.

Worth the drive, stunning beach that we walked three times and the trail up to the vulcano (search for it on Alltrails) is amazing 🙂 Seafood was also awesome, paid about 20 USD per Person at both of the places. They both belong to the family 😉
Highly recommended!

Spend 2 nights here. On our way in we took the ‘main’ TOUGH road along the bay. On our way out we took the sandy road along the coast which is waaay better!

To take the sandy road drive up to the crossing where you have the volcano in front of you. Go right.
Drive all the way passing greenhouses until you reach the end. Go left here. Now after 5/10 minutes you leave the fields/greenhouses behind you. Just follow this road to La Chorera. In normal conditions no 4x4 needed.

This place is a paradise ! The food, the view, the people ! At first our plan was to stay 1 night, finally we stayed 4 !

Great camping spot! We stayed in the parking lot which overlooks the ocean. Enjoyed a nice walk along the beach and roasted oysters at the restaurant. Highly recommended!

Awesome camping for free! Tough road in, but worth it. Eat in one of the two Alvaro restaurants and pig out on shrimp, ceviche, octopus or clams. Killer food. $10 US for huge plate of garlic shrimp.

Big quinceañera last night so Mauricio put us beach-side next to one of their family houses away from the party.

The motto here is “yes” and “no problem”. Gals in the restaurant are so pleasant!

4 bars Telcell 3G (ATT) and Verizon works well, too. Giant beach. Zero complaints.

Follow iOverlander map. Do not follow Google or turn right into the strawberry fields or you’ll run through a big sand dune.

Check out YouTube for some Don Alvaro visitor videos.

As described. Some of the best, freshest seafood we have had, and super affordable..they really hook it up! Oyster shooters and ceviche were our favorites. They don't have alcoholic beverages, so if that's something you're into, don't forget to bring your own. We stayed three nights, explored the dunes and hiked up Volcán Sudoeste. If we had 4WD we definitely would have ventured further down Punta Mazo. Don't forget to tip generously and/or leave a donation if you stay the night! 10/10

Great place to grab a good seafood meal, enjoy a precious view and park for the night. We came by in our Winnebago Era to meet up with friends and enjoy the area. Yes, the road from Highway 1 was rough but we took it slow for the entire 18 kilometers. Delicious food. Precious views. Overnight camping.

Me quede dos noches, el camino es de piedras, así que es un poco duro llegar, pero vale la pena. No necesitas 4x4.
Hay un par de restaurantes de la familia de Don Álvaro. Al llegar preguntamos al hijo si nos podíamos quedar y dormir en la van, no tuvo problema y nos dijo que podíamos acampar.
No necesitas pagar.

I recommend this place!

Very relaxing place. There are some great restaurants now. All owned by brothers of Don Alvaro. I came for the night and ended up staying two. Overall, a great experience. Very clean and safe.

Agree with prior descriptions. The best part for us was long walks on the beach and hikes in the sand dunes up to the volcano. The pueblo is very clean and well-kept, the community takes pride in their Pueblo. If we were there longer, we would figure out a way to get our kayak into the estuary where there were thousands of birds.

We fell in love with this place! Bought lobsters off of some local fisherman after we watched them swim out to their traps to get them! Peaceful and safe. Wall to block the wind. You park on a cliff, but it is only 200 feet easy walk down to the sandy beach. You can fish right from the rocky cliff you are parked next to! Highly Recommend!

Amazing view, worth the bumpy drive in. Nice beach close by for wandering. We were the only ones here for one night. Simple and ideal.

la chorera is actually a community. camping is at campo Don alvaro (No signs) has basic toilets. it's on a cliff. some supplies at nearby house shops (No signs) just ask. leave a donation he does a good job keeping the place clean. his sons sell clams, oysters, mussels and lobster. 30 peso showers at the house behind Don alvaro

Beautiful area on a bluff overlooking the beach. We got lost at first going around the Driscoll strawberry farm but finally made it after about 30 mins on a rough rocky road. Arriving to the volcanic rocky beach was a nice end to the day. Alvaro welcomed us to his property, not charging us anything. however we did not leave without making a donation to this hard working man. Toilets and trash disposal available. You won’t regret making a stop here!

Really great spot at the ocean! Everything is really simple but ok. We were the only ones. Don Alvaro is a really friendly guy. The Road is really bad and rough but the view apologize everything! Please give a donation!

Simply amazing spot, perched right above the waves on volcanic rock. This small fishing town is something else— everyone along the coast fishing and hunting for clams. We were the only ones at the camp, during a 2-night storm. Incredible waves, rain and lightning. Sadly, didn’t see Don Alvaro until our last morning. When the weather cleared up, we walked along the coast where the road continues into the sand dunes. There were some chill camping spots along the water in the dunes. The dirt road out to La Chorera gets very muddy and full of lakes during storms, and pro tip: drive through the lakes, they’re deep but not too deep, everyone makes it across. We mistakenly took a side route to avoid a massive lake and got ourselves stuck in the mud! Great spot. But, sadly, we didn’t get oysters or clams.

This spot is amazing and the family is so friendly and helpful.please do give a donation for staying.

Just as everyone has described, Don's place was a great stop on our journey. The lot and toilets are clean, quiet and safe. We were even invited to join the family for a dinner of tostados.

Report Check-In

Nice spot overlooking beach. Very quite and out of wind. Pay what you feel fair. Pit toilets.

Report Check-In

Don and his son are very nice and accomodating. They have new toilets but the men's was clogged and full (with no plunger nearby or I would have fixed it) The flush water bucket was virtually empty too. Up the street a woman runs a small store out of her house and has chips and sodas, eggs, peppers, onion and some other basic supplies. Don didn't have any seafood but suggested ee stop at one of the many markets we had just passed to get some. they even offered to cook it for us if we didn't want too. the grounds are very clean and the views cannot be beat. We hiked the sand dunes, the volcano and along the beach. they only asked for a tip so we left 100 MXN. Nice place and worth the washboard drive out here in our opinion.

Report Check-In

Gravel parking lot with a view of the ocean and a large wall to block the wind. There don’t seem to be any services. At least none were offered. Fresh oysters were delicious. Helpful and friendly family. We were the only guests.

Report Check-In

Nice is the last word id use to describe this place. its just a gravel car park looks like somethinh off the set of maf max. Def for for tenting. Rode in, checked the GPS that I was in facy in the right place, and rode straight back out again. I imagine in an RV you can hide yourself away. Ride in was crappy too, rough washboard. We live in different worlds us tent campers and the RV roamers for sure.

Im sure the people were nice though?!

Report Check-In

Really nice basic campground, it is located on Don Alvaro's family property right on the beach. Safe and secure. We hiked around the natural preserve. If you want you can hike up one of the volcano. You pay as much as you like. Don Alvaro is still in the process of building bathroom facility's. There are 2 ways to get there, one is super rough and adventurous (high clearance vehicles required), the other an easy washboard road. The washboard road is the longer one on the map, along the bay. We would stay here again.

Report Check-In

nice place on a volcano island
nice people, you can camp there and just decide yourself what's the spot is worth for you
12 km of hard washboard to get there

Report Check-In

Rustic camping but safe and nice, friendly people. Ask for Don Alvaro or any of his sons. They will take great care of you! I'd give it 5 stars if they ever put in some new outhouses but everything else was awesome!
