Stop along the road to the Nevado de Colima National Park, just where an old forest road (?) turns off. We stayed here one night on a weekend after getting altitude sickness in the national park and slept well (this spot is at 2600m so 1000m less then the camping in the park). No cars coming past at night and not a lot of traffic in the week. People going to the park are all tourists or guides, so we felt really safe. It's almost half way up to the park. Road to the park and roads in the park are all doable with 2WD, but high clearance is nice sometimes because of washouts. Big rigs can't really handle the sharp turns, so I would definitely not take anything longer than 7m / 24ft up there.
We don't have any photos of this place yet.
