Description

Heading west toward Chile, On the left side is the building which both has migrations and Aduana(for vehicle). Both very easy. The offices are open from 8.30 till 12.30 and from 14.30 till 19.00. Drive past any line up of trucks.

Important TIP REQUEST: Some officers may request that you tip them 15 bs per person for the migration out stamp. There is NO such official charge. This is a blatant request to line their pockets, so just ignore it.

There is no possibility to change money, bolivia - chile or chile - bolivia money!

Chile -> Bolivia
We were surprised by the Siesta (if we only had read the iOverlander Button before...) and waited until 2 pm. Then the procedure was fast and smooth. Each traveller has to fill in Formulario 250. You don't have to do it beforehand, just come and scan the QR, use their WiFi and do it digitally on the spot. It seems you don't have to fill in Formulario 249 (for tourist cars) if you have an European plated car.
The friendly Lady had a quick look insode our van, checked the chassis number and off we went.

Report Check-In

Bolivia => Chile
two busses had arrived short time before us, queue up, about 20 min waiting time. quivk pricesses, migracion and aduana are in same building. 1) QR code outside => fill in Formulario 250 to declare your baggage and currencies. They scanned the formularil at the entrance. 2) Go inside and get your passports stamped. Aduana is one step away on next booth => cancel your TIP, make sure you take a photo of the cancellation stamp. That's it!! Very smooth, friendly staff.

Report Check-In

Quick and easy. Bit confusing which building to go but in total it took about 20-30min. Fill in the digital form and off you go. Friendly staff and efficient process. Much better than entering the country which took 1.5hours without waiting line

Report Check-In

Frontière passée en 30 minutes. Policia très gentille

Frontera pasada en 30 minutos. Policia muy amable !

Report Check-In

Same for us. No problems at all. as a Bus arrived Just before us there was a Queue but the policeman Takes Care for the Queue and the customs Guy only checked the number Plate and Car Registration. No questions about good, Alcohol and Money in Cash. took in total one hour but only because of the Bus people. all good.

Report Check-In

Very smooth border crossing. Friendly stuff, wanted to see the Chassis number and took a look into our Truck. Got 90 days Visa and Tip Not interested in vaccinations or food

Leaving Bolivia
The bolivian side was very quick. In the aduana building was also the migration office. The windows were next to eachother. First the stamp in the passport to leave Bolivia, and then the TIP cancellation. I took a photo of the TIP just in case. It took us about 15 min.

Report Check-In

I found this border crossing quite annoying. We came on a Sunday from Chile to Bolivia. Bolivian customs let us wait forever, then checked chassis number of the car and searched for the engine number in the German car papers where it’s not noted. At no other border anybody was interested in the engine number. Had to throw away fruits and vegetables. Took us around two hours.

Report Check-In

We arrived at 3:30 pm and had to wait 45 minutes for an official to arrive but was quick and easy once he arrived. We went to the migration building on the left hand side as you are leaving Bolivia. Had passport stamped at one window and TIP canceled at the next. Took photo of cancelled TIP.

Report Check-In

Bolivia to chile.
Really easy. Almosto nobody (just two trucks and wind).
Stamp out the passport and then cancel the tip (we took a photo to the cancelled tip just in case).
If you come from uyuni, the road is highly recommended. We did it with a common car 2wd. First 60 km are the worst, go slowly and bumping. Next 60 km paved. And next 200 km approx good earth road (few kilometres sandy but ok as below the sand there is hard earth). Is better a high clearance but we saw small cars that could do it. Inspirational road. Stop whenever your eyes connect deeply with nature.

Chile to Bolivia
Easy border crossing. Crossed without problems with our Mexican van using poder issued in Chile and apostilled in Santiago. Needed one copy of: poder, car registration card, passports

Report Check-In

super easy and quick crossing. very friendly staff.

Report Check-In

Travelling from Chile to Bolivia two kiwis in a US registered van. Very easy, very quick even though we speak no Spanish. Here are the steps we followed:
1. There was a large empty building that looked like it was where we should do our paperwork but it was empty so instead we parked outside the Aduana office on the right hand side and walked across to the small Migracion office on the left hand side. We filled in white form that the officer gave us, handed these to him, he stamped our passports and the bottom half of the white form and gave them back to us. This gave us 30 days in Bolivia (which we extended easily and for free by another 30 days in Cochabamba.)
2. We crossed back to the Aduana. Here we handed the officer our car registration document and the driver's passport. He entered this information into a computer, printed out the TIP and came out to the van to check the registration plate matched the details. The TIP he issued was for 90 days. No charge for this.
Picture attached was taken in No Man's Land, half-way between border posts.

Report Check-In

Crossing to Bolivia took a while at the aduna, but people super friendly ... didnt even checked my car! No "tip" requested.

Report Check-In

Entering Bolivia
For cyclist: no food control (guy said they check only cars and moto).
Got 30 days visa. Guy said we can easily extend it in towns.

Report Check-In

Chile to Bolivia. They did not let us enter with our Chilean car. We didn't have the padrón yet and tried to pass with an notarial authorization from the previous owner. Chilean "poderes" are not recognized! Apparently you have to get an apostilla (legalization) from the Bolivian consulate in Calama (closes at 1pm!!). We didnt try that, but the Chilean aduana told us that maybe the previous owner needs to be present as well at the consulate. apparently sometimes the Bolivian aduana lets people pass, sometimes not. we were not asked for money.

Report Check-In

Left Bolivia through this aduana. They did not give a receipt for exit, i had a bad feeling that the paperwork would not get processed at the time. 3 months later i am at the aduana in la Quiaca being told, surprise surprise, that they did not properly process the exit. I got the feeling the woman in the aduana had seen this before... After a 2 hour wait they did find the exit document and i could come back in.

Report Check-In

Standard border crossing procedure. Nothing to pay immigration and aduana did not give us a receipt for handing TIP in. Bypass the line of trucks.

Report Check-In

Arrived at 12:20 but Migración was already closed, so we started to watch a movie when for some reason they opened again at 13:30. He wanted 15 BS pp so we just told him we didn't have any bolivianos left, no problem, got our exit stamps. Altogether took 5 mins apart from the hour long wait...

Report Check-In

Regular procedure. The staff was nice. We didnt have the papers of our dog but the guy let us in anyway without asking any money or thing like that. The vehicle inspection was quick, just openned the door and ask if i have alchool with me. If you arrive late, you can sleep here among the trucks.

HITCHHIKERS, READ THIS!
The migration officer at this Bolivian border seems to dislike hitchhikers or anyone that is not willing to spend a lot of money in "his" country. The story: We, as a couple, were lucky enough to meet two Bolivian truck drivers at the Chilean Aduanas willing to take us from Ollagüe to Uyuni. When we wanted to get our entry stamp, the Bolivian migration officer told us that neither a truck, nor a private car from Bolivia would be allowed to bring hitchhikers or foreigners into the country - for security reasons. You are also not allowed to cross this border on foot. We would have to take the bus passing by at around 4pm. Also tourists would have to have a certain amount of money on them in order to prove that they can sustain themselves in Bolivia. We knew all of his reasons were just made up, but he kept declining us the entry.
Even the two truck drivers passionately discussed with the migration officer to let us pass, but eventually had to give up. When all hope seemed to be gone, the migration officer kind of admitted that everything was for our own security. It seemed that he simply couldn't understand that we were hitchhiking and putting such trust into strangers, especially into Bolivianos. We kept emphasizing that everything we did was on our own responsibility and again, very kindly demanded our right to enter the country. Finally he agreed on giving us the stamp and let us go on with the trucks.
The landscapes you get to see on the way certainly are amazing, but, apart from a few Bolivian trucks that will only take one person at a time, there really is very few traffic passing this way. The only way to pass this border without troubles would be in a private car and not tell anyone at the Bolivian border that you are actually hitchhiking. But traffic exists, so hitchhiking possible! Good luck!

Report Check-In

Quick and efficient border. Went very smooth. 5 min for migracion and 10 for Aduana. Did not check our vehicle thorough. And did not ask for any money.

Report Check-In

We hitchhike since 4 months in South America, but a border like this one is new to us... The police guy, after waking up from his siesta at around 4pm, told us it's forbidden to enter the country walking, we should return to Chile... We are waiting now for couple of hours that a car, truck or bus arrives, but it seems that on Saturday there is just no traffic at all! So for hitchhikers, pay attention that you find a ride in Chile and not like us just walk from the border the 5km until Bolivia!

Report Check-In

Quick an efficient border post. Exit stamps 5 minutes and Aduana guy canceled our TIP in another 5. Bring car documents, passport and TIP. Nobody didn’t asked any money. We drove here straight from Uyuni. When the F5 road turns to west then just keep driving straight to south(ish) on that road what has all the check-in’s etc. Looks smaller road on the map here. In reality its a good gravel road where you can now do easily 90km/h with cruise control. The last 2-3 km to the border was under construction so had to go slower there. From Uyuni to this border was 3 hours with lunch and visit to the gasolinera.

Report Check-In

Another crooked aduana. Do not pay the 15bob. He insisted I pay 15bob to leave the country. I told him, "darme factura" He pulled a bogus photocopy of a paper saying there was a 15bob fee to leave the country. I said "no factura, no pago" he stamped the papers and off we went.

Report Check-In

From Bolivia -> To Chile. Really easy and fast border. The guy from the migration asked us 15 Bob, we said that we knew that travellers don't need to pay anything, He tried a little more but we said no. He didn't said anything more and let us go. It was fast for the car too.

Report Check-In

immigration was straight forward, only took 5 minutes. Aduana was a different story. They searched the whole cars, bags etc and took all our beer, were told you can only 3 litres of alcohol across. We tried to ask to keep some of it and they refused us and took it all.

Report Check-In

Migration officer (who sat next to the Police officer) asked for 15bs for each of our 5 passports. When I asked "Por que?" he replied for visa purposes, that Americans and Koreans pay $100US. I said I was neither of these and pointed to the visa free countries which he had in the wall, "my country does not require I pay anything". He said we have to pay on exit. I said "no" and walked out.

Report Check-In

We crossed easily the frontier, no money asked. 30 days visa for us and 90 days for the car. We waited for the borders officers until 5pm. You can't be in hurry. They quickly checked the car, they only wanted to know that we didn't carried more than 3 bottles of alcohol.

Report Check-In

the Migration did not fill in my passport with the days to stay in Bolivia I stupidly went back after my TIP and he gave me 30 days only Should have kept my mouth shut. altitude my excuse

Report Check-In

Leaving Bolivia, entering Chile: You have to go to two offices here. The guys checking out our passport in the first office wanted a 15 BOL tip. We just ignored his request, pretending we didn't understand. He even said 15 in English!
Quick and painless! Gorgeous scenery!

Report Check-In

very easy, no trouble, no payment. had to wait a little bit for our documents but other than that, perfect! even a very nice police officer changed our dollars into Bolivianos. great first border experience!

Report Check-In

Just passed through the Bolivian customs from Chile. For a US citizen I had to pay 160$. The money has to have no tears in it and be in better then mint condition. We were told we also needed a photo, plane ticket to leave, and immunizations. But we didn't show any of these forms

Report Check-In

Nothing to pay for us at migration office.

For information, the right way from Uyuni to here wasn't on our maps. You had to follow the overnight spits on this apps ! So from Uyuni, go to San Christobal and follow the road to San Augustin and Los Reyes. Then continue straight to Avaroa border.
This is 230km of non asphalted but good condition road. We did it with our big rig in 5h.

Report Check-In

this is the real border crossing! on the right side is the office for the migracion. on the left side is the office for the importation vehiculo. very easy. the offices are open from 8.30 till 12.30 and from 14.30 till 19.00. after 15 minutes you can open the gate on your self. enjoy and make pictures! important: you have to pay 15 bs per person for the migration out stamp. there is no possibility to change money, bolivia - chile or chile - bolivia money!
