Description

From Villavieja to pueblo Nuevo it's a (not too bad) dirt road. The bridge is for 40t (locals said that) and before and afterwards a high tunnel, so big rigs might also pass without problems.
So from Tatacoa you don't need to go back the whole way to Neiva. Just be aware it takes around 2h.

Pretty dirt road, in fairly good condition. First of all, it has many rice fields then the desert appears, the landscapes become desert and the cacti make their appearance. Several bivouac possibilities along the road.

Drove this road today was bone dry and a nice drive. Easy in any vehicle at the moment. Take some time to stop and enjoy the views.

Nice drive out of Tatacoa desert today :)

We enjoyed the drive in to Tatacoa from here. Road to entrance was fine. Had some steeper spots, but did not need 4wd. Added a photo of our truck camper in the tunnel to add perspective. Bridge is fine of any weight, so a loaded water truck driving over it.

the land slide that closed this road is now clear. the road near the town is pretty chewed up but once you get a km or 2 past it's not bad. worth going to tatacoa this way for a picture on this bridge alone.

Very nice way to avoid boring slab, the road is definitely not smooth but unless it has rained 2x4 will get through. Bridge seems solid although the middle plates have seen better days, motos stick up car tire path. Nice scenery, cool tunnels and you get to save $$$ and hassle by not having to take the ferry. I recommend for ADV riders and 4x4 guys why like dust over tar.

There is now (as of mid-2021) a ferry from Aipe to Villaviejo, so If you are coming from north and don’t want to take this road you can now take the highway and ferry across. Cost was 25k COP. Didn’t take the road so can’t tell you if it was worth it. Ferry is 6am to 6pm

When dry this is a very pleasant track to use. Two old railway tunnels, one big bridge.
Fine in a MAN 4x4 big rig, 3.5m high,
two hours just rumbling merrily along.
In the wet, 4x4 with at least all terrain tyres, diff locks and some off road experience.

For us this is not a scenic road. Nothing special, you just see farms along the way. The ripio is ok. Took us 2h to reach the pavement coming from Tatacoa.

Report Check-In

I expected some adventurous road but it's not. Just a normal dirt road. Easy. Oh yeah, it was dry.

Report Check-In

Absolutely doable for any car when dry. A bit bumpy, nothing compared to some other roads to certain attractions in the South.

Report Check-In

El camino se hace despacio pero sin complicaciones. Es de ripio, con muy pocos momentos de barro. Nuestra camioneta es tracción simple.

Local said this road will take approx 2 hours. We turned around and went thru Neiva and then turned to the left after Fortalecillas. The road there is paved with some path holes. It is little bit longer way but much better.

nice drive. road is not bad when dry. on a heavy motorbike with two people up no problem

Report Check-In

Bring time and high clearance. Ground in the flooded tunnels is solid. In our 2wd MB Sprinter it took us 2.5h.

We had sunshine though, with lots of rain it might be different of course.

Report Check-In

Very nice drive, but during wet season the tunnels are flooded. We were happy to have 4x4. Did not see any 2WD vehicles during wet season on this road...

Report Check-In

Road is no problem but took us closer to 2 hours in our Ford E350 from the highway to the Tatacoa Observatory. The tunnels had up to 12 inches of standing water in some areas but the bottom was gravel, not muddy.

Report Check-In

la piste est belle mais nous avons crevé un pneu

Report Check-In

No problem at all, we saw a lot worse in Chile, Bolivia and Guyana. We needed about 90 min from the first campsite in the desert to the paved road.

Report Check-In

Very scenic road, accessible to everyone ! Enjoy the view. Like it a lot

Pour ceux qui arrivent du nord en voiture c'est un bon raccourci pour rejoindre le désert de Tatacoa
Il faut tourner au panneau Pueblo Nuevo et âpres suivre une bonne piste pendant 35 km

Easy road, you can do it with every vehicle. There is one bridge, no weight problems (it's an old train bridge). Two tunnels, no height issues. Most of the road is with gravel. It took as about an hour for 30km (big truck). And by the way, nice sceneries.

Report Check-In

The road north of this gets a bit tight. Multiple gates and a couple sketchy parts with the Tacoma. But fun!

Report Check-In

It is a not too bad dirt road and you can skip two tolls by taking it. We drove with a minivan with no issues.
