This is the actual location for free boondocking at spur 406. Head down a dirt road after the last campsite, several pullouts along the way and a big turnaround at the end so could handle big rigs. no lake view or easy access to the lake -simply drive down spur 406 for that- , but really quiet and peaceful.

There are 3 sort of places to stay near the end of paved spur Rd 406 and 3 pins on the map, but there seems to be some confusion about what is or isn't free.
1. The northernmost location is the obvious NRA pay campground with picnic structures, grills and pit toilets. Appear to be 5 sites with pay station. $6/night
2. The middle location is down the dirt road on the left after the last site and privy. There are carsonite posts designating the area for camping. According to the sign at the pay station, this is the primitive camp area and is still $6/night. There are about 3 or 4 unmarked spots.
3. The southernmost area is a small pulloff near the literal end of the road by the lake. According to the sign at the pay station, camping is only allowed in designated areas within Amistad NRA.
From other comments, there seems to be minimal/sporadic enforcement. You be the judge.
Report Check-InAs others have said, there are a few free spots down the dirt road after the last pay campsite. We stayed one night and it was super quiet and chill. There was another group with two cars just up the road but we never heard them. Quite windy, but not dusty. Had a few bars of sporadic cell service through the evening (t-mobile).
Report Check-InStayed 2 nights and saved 12$ but not going to the campground up the road. Nobody bothered and it was great to sleep by the water. Met nice people and dog loved being free
Report Check-InLoved this spot! It was clean, well kept road, nice pit toilets and LOTS of space for my dog to run!!
Report Check-InFantastic spot for off-grid set ups! Camping at the farthest point just beyond the turnaround is the primo spot- glimpses of the lake and a 10 minute wild trail to a point with nice swimming. You can also hike about 10 minutes up the dirt road to use the restrooms at the established campground.
