Description

Beautiful place at river. Nice to swim there, also good to stop if you don't want to stay over night.
From the main road you have to turn where the sign for "Monkey bay lodge" (you can camp there too) is. Then 10min drive on gravel road, last meters maybe a bit narrow for big rigs, but you also can park on a grassy field.

Beautiful spot, not for bigger, toll rigs.

We went to the end of 2 vehicles, it had no more recently but the ground was waterlogged and the water level very high, the motorhome got bogged down, fortunately we were able to pull it with the pick up. There was not much space downstairs to park even if there had been no mud. We had to turn around and find another spot.

Still as described. Spent one night without a problem. Next morning 2 guys came to pick up some trash and smoke a joint. No issues.

One of the most beautiful wildcamp spots we've stayed at in a while. Unfortunately it had a lot of bugs which came through our mosquito net at night and didn't let us sleep well. Besides that there approached a car at 1am, they launched a canoe and returned at 4am, what was a little weird. They didn't bother us, we think it could have been a night tour. We assume that this doesn't happen every night...

By far one of the nicest spots we've stayed. If you can make it down to the river, do so, it's worth it. But there was a spot higher up where others have obviously stopped. A guy from the lodge came by to clean up a bit, some of their guests and a few locals who were foraging in the jungle, but other than that we had it to ourselves for 3 nights. Spent most of it naked tbh... Had the doors open with no issues. The bugs, especially the little red ants are bad; scout around for their nest and trails before parking. There was a troup of howlers just up the river that we went to visit daily. They have a newborn at the moment. The river is pretty clean and very refreshing. The current is strong enough to float down. Pack in, pack out etc.

Amazing place! We couldn't make the last meters to the water with our little Nissan March so we turned around and stayed about 300m away from the water with our car & tent. We camped there 2 nights, it was amazing! The water is wonderful refreshing. The sounds at night are unbelievable. We heard monkeys in the morning!
When we hang around at the river we met a guy who works at the Monkey Bay and he was very friendly. He said that he saw our car and tent and told us we found a very good place to stay. He gave us some tips and left to work.
When we followed the river (swimming) at one point a old fisher man warned us that he just saw a snake in the water. He thought it was a dangerous one. So we decided to not keep going swimming that day :D

This place was really beautiful. The directions are bang on. Google maps doesn't have a road here, but if you turn at the Monkey Bay Lodge sign, the gravel road will take you right to it. We were able to make it right to the beach without getting stuck in the mud even after it had just rained. We drive a 2 wheel drive GMC Savana. We even saw an ancient Volvo make it's way down here without issue. If it's not pouring, a 2 wheel drive vehicle should be fine.
Lots of locals came and went on a Wednesday, everyone was friendly. The river temperature was perfect. In March the water was no deeper than 3 feet at most, but the current is swift. Children should be decent swimmers.
One thing that wasn't listed was how TERRIBLE the bugs are in March. Armies of Sand Flys, Horse flys, Mosquitoes, biting ants, no-see-ums, and the like swarmed us every hour of the day. They even made their way through two layers of mosquito netting into our van at night. We wore bug spray the entire time and were still eaten alive. Perhaps we were here during a particularly bad time of year, since no one else seemed to mention how bad the bugs were. Either way, come prepared with spray and light, full length clothes. This was the buggiest place in Belize we've been so far.

all the discriptions are correct.
it's a beautiful spot to camp, swim and catch fish.
the last muddy meters were no problem with our 2wd e350, although there was rain during the last day and the night before we left. just a bit bumpy.
friendly locals but not crowded on weekends.
it's very very quiet at night.just the beautiful sound of the nature.
this spot is highly recommend

loved this place! bring enough food and water, you might stay longer than you think. Only very bad & spotty 3G on Digi though. Road in was doable for us, 6m long, 3m high. Would not recommend in rainy season though!

WOW! What a great place to spend time. Very nice way through the jungle and the river is just incredible! We've seen jaguar traces in the mud and heard howler monkeys! Just incredible. It's free and if you have the chance, just go there!

very nice place in the jungle! many birds and we saw howler monkey and tucan just before the river! you can swim in the river ! beautifull spot near the river to camp.

the place to get here is ok , a little muddy but ok with a 4wheel drive . (if not you can stop 150m before and camp and go by foot to the river.

We couldn't make it all the way down the cause of huge puddles (4WD would be fine) but there was a cleared field off to the left while driving down the road so we camped there - easy!

Report Check-In

Really beautiful spot next to the river. Due to heavy rains we couldn't make it down in our 2wd sprinter but found a nice level grass-spot just before the river and walked down. Quiet except lots of jungle sounds!

Sibun river. Good place to rest. We spent 3 nights here. We parked our 28 ft rig in the grass area located at the intersection of the two trails about 150 meters before river shore.
We have seen Parrots, an Oso, monkeys and we heard jaguar(s?) Each night around 2 o'clock. Better to keep pets inside at night!
Locals enjoy swimming at the river on sunday. The pit toilet is a hole in the ground located at top of the stairs.
