Description

We slept here one night, around just monkeys, safe, nice place in the ruins, free.
TIP: when you are driving through the Park entry, buy Ticket to Uaxactun, it cost only 50qz PP, then in Tical stop at the information centre, take for free the map of Tical, go to Administration building and ask for permit for the car to drive there, it is for free. Drive to Uaxactun, enjoy the ruins there alone and the local people, we stayed here 2 Nights and then in the morning Drive to Tical, 2 minutes before the barrier is on the left side a Restaurant. Latest Check-Ins

Quiet location in the jungle. Spider monkeys were playing above us and howler monkeys partied all night. The last 200m of the dirt road requires high clearance as the path is damaged by the water. The village of Uaxactún is really nice and the ruins are interesting.

Report Check-In

Follow the signs in the village leading to Grupo A y B. Nice level parking lot. Wouldn’t recommend the last 200 meters for a big rig due to low branches, narrow, and rather steep road. Our 3-meter tall Syncro VW hightop Westfalia did just fine.

If your vehicle is 3m or taller, you’ll likely hit quite a few very low hanging branches. We have a Ford Transit high top and I wouldn’t drive the last bit to park there. Dirt path is steep but doable and not 4x4 required. It’s tranquil at this parking lot but also not the most level. We ended up parking next to Uaxactun Restaurant after eating lunch there. More central and we feel safer overnighting there than in this parking lot.

Last 200m up to the parking were close to the limit for our FWD van. Still made it up though. 11 year old girl showing us around had actual knowledge of the ruins and Mayas. As she was not begging and actually dis offer us a service we were happy to give her a school book an colored pencils.

nice and safe place in the jungle, near village. The ruins are nice. we were alone, only with kids of the village, who welcome us very warmly.
they spend the two days with us, walking in the ruins and the forest.

we saw spider monkeys, tucans and heard many howler monkeys!

very special location to go!!

You now pay 20q for the map and get a coloured wrist band for each site so they see you. This village is the best areal deal the site needs lots of your imagination.

Report Check-In

We spent two nights here. It was super chill, no one hassled us at all. The last morning some man came up and said we couldn't stay here and said it was dangerous. I asked him if we were not allowed to stay here or if it was just dangerous. He seemed confused and said it was just dangerous. I personally cant see why it would be. We were here Saturday and Sunday night, not a single person came up here. Beautiful spot close to different t ruins. Worth getting up for the sunrise.

Report Check-In

We came up here in the afternoon, last part of road to get up to parking (400 mt) is rough 4x4 is better.A bunch of kids (older was 11) run behind us last 500mt and guided us in the ruins and explained the story and also fact about plants and fauna, really fun. He lives with sister in the last house before driving up to ruins. He will probably find you before you get to the site if he isn’t in school! The site is not impressive if you have done Tikal but the village atmosfere and the fact you will be probably the only visitor make up for it. Also the drive from Tikal is amazing we took our time (around 2h) and spot tucanos, monkeys, peccary , and lots of other birds. We got here on March 20, one day before equinox. There are 3 special date to be here on top of the temple 4 of the site E for sunrise.
On summer solstice the sun rise behind temple 1 , on equinox behind temple 2 ( we will check that tomorrow :) )on winter solstice behind temple 3. This place was probably where mayans did most study on the sun alignments and create the Mayan calendars. Our guide said that the place is safe. But the other site near site E there are kids smoking pot.... and he does not recommend it...
There are also 2 campsite, Aldana family (camping, rooms and meals and tours) and Campamento ecologico el Chiclero ( the owner offers trip to el Mirador and trip to Rio Azul in dry season and Naachtun [email protected]

A bit before this spot is a "campsite". We paid a lady 15q pp to park our truck in her garden. Friendly family. The locals said it was a bit dangerous to park on the isolated parking lot, not mentioning that our rig wouldn't have been able to make that last piece of road.
Ask around in the village, the site has a name, but we forgot. Hiked around the ruins, you will be alone. It's worth visiting Uaxactun, sleep there and drive the next morning to Tikal, to get two different experiences of the area.
The road from Tikal to here is maintained so you will be able to get there with a big rig as well (chicken busses also go there). Bumpy ride though amd maybe a bit more challenging in wet season!
