Description

VISA ON ARRIVAL NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR ENTERING Iraq (depending on your country of nationality - most "western" passports are ok).

December 2023: Border officers reject entry to tourists going to Iraq in shared taxis because of the rebels on the iraqi side. Not sure if the same applies for crossing the border in your own car...

Visa can be obtained in Amman at the Iraq consulate.
Time-consuming border. Took us 5 hours from Iraq to Jordan.

Iraq exit:
step 1; K9 check.
step 2; passport pre-check
step 3; car registration (there is a van with a guy who registers number plate and name.)
step 4; portacabin where you get a form with a stamp
step 5; drive further towards the more official border buildings
step 6; go into the building and do a pre-check for all the formalities for Jordan. They make pictures of EVERY document You need to enter Jordan and send that by WhatsApp to Jordan for a final approval.
a: passport
b: car license
c: health insurance card
d: PCR test result
e: qrc code visit Jordan covid registration
e: Iraqi car registration form (blue one) and after that your passport will be stamped.

Now to finalize the car part:
you get a form with a stamp after checking the car documents and the car. with this form you must go to a building on the other side of the border area to pay for the car exit fee (15000 dinar). this will involve half a dozen people with stamps, forms and copies. If you are lucky, they will bring you with a Hilux to this building. after the payment and formalities, the man in the Hilux will bring you back to your car. Hand over the proof of payment and other forms with stamps. now you get a new form with a stamp that you will need at the final police check.
That's it and 2 hours later. drive to the Jordan side.

Jordan entry:
step 1: PCR test and check qrc visit Jordan covid registration
step 2: k9 check inside
step 3: inside check
step 4: under-side check
step 5: personel check. you also get an important form. you have to collect stamps and signatures on this form.
step 6: x-ray car check
step 7: Possibly an extra inside check.

If you pass this time-consuming 2 hour part you can change money, get your visa, pay road tax and insurance.
leave the border area after final police check and park outside for the night near the trucks. To avoid additional checks in the middle of the night, prearrange your stay with customs and police.

Note the opening hours. The Jordanian border is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5 PM

Report Check-In

Took 7 hours with a guy who helped us and demanded 20 USD at the end.

Be offensive otherwise it takes longer. Computer was down we pushed that we only need carnet stamps and they can add info later in their laptop.

75 USD Visa
22 USD Car insurance
10 USD for random stamp

NO -> 100 USD import fee for the car surprisingly!

19 USD for 7 days unlimited internet at the shop next to the Amazon supermarket.

Go to 2nd petrol station after the border. First one is expensive 2nd one 0,32 euro petrol liter.

No problem to sleep at the border.

Report Check-In

Open on Fridays and convoy also going on Fridays.

Report Check-In

Everything as described. My recommendation: on the Iraqi side of the boarder, tell the officers that you first want to exchange money. Go to the last supermarket on the right side (after the restaurant). There you will get a good rate (nearly like in the cities) when you bring new 100 Dollar bills (we got 1$ = 1.450 IQD). Then pay everything in IDQ during the process. You will get everything a little cheaper and they won’t scam you!

Jordan > Iraq
Exit fee Jordan 10JOD p.P + 25JOD for the car.
Iraq we paid
75 USD + 2 USD service fee per visa.
5000 dinar for copies
25.000 dinar car customs
40.000 dinar caravan insurance
You can exchange dollar to Iraq dinar at the border.
We would recommend doing the exit and entry in one day. Sleep at the border and then take the Escort in the morning. For us the border only opened at 8.30. With all the waiting and switching vehicles we were at about 8 in the evening in Bagdad. All very friendly.

Report Check-In

Exit jordan easy and quick. About 30 Minutes, 10jod per person an 25jod for car exit fee in cash.
Iraq site chaotiq and without any plan. Lot of different steps, seems like offices change every time. One guy speaks german. Hes trying to make friends but wants to rip you off.
The real prices are 75$ for Visa (they ask for 80$, just be hard and say no), then 22$ for car insurance and in the and 25‘000 Dinar cash for carnet, checking and roadtax. As they had no electricity in the office in the morning we had to copy our stuff in the copyshop, witch was 5000 dinar for 4 person, i think this is normaly not to pay.
At the area there are several shops. Next to the restaurant is a supermarket selling unlimited simcard for 7 days for 16$. Also dollar exchange in the next supermarket.

The border goes through numerous formalities but you can sometimes take an intermediary for a bribe.
La frontière se passe avec les nombreuses formalités mais vous pouvez parfois prendre un intermédiaire moyenant bakchich.

It took me 12 hours from Baghdad to the border on a motorcycle, and I think I was lucky and got through fast. Recommend starting at 5 or 6 in the morning from Baghdad, to arrive before night. Use highway 1, not 11. They won't let you through on that one. I had 13 different vehicles escorting me for 400 km. All very friendly and nice, but it takes time! Bring water and food.

The Jordanian border closes in the afternoon, so you'll have to stay the night at the border. Go to customs they'll direct you to a place. They have some basic rooms for free, but I slept in the mosque. They won't let you camp with a tent. In a car should be fine I think.

Iraq exit.
Start around 8:30 am. They'll guide you through and it was quite easy. I paid 25.000 dinar for customs exit, might be more for a car? Have money ready, you can change leftovers on the Jordan side. I entered with an import document from Kurdistan, so needed that for exit. I guess they'll stamp your CDP if you entered with that.

Jordan entry.
It was a confusing time consuming chaos. Very inefficient, but you'll get through. Custom checks first, luggage and x-ray.
Then go change money at the money changer 100 meters further down (100 usd was 70 JOD there so decent rate). There's no ATM so bring cash!
Then do immigration. I had a Jordan pass, so didn't pay for a visa (I had to insist!). Think the visa is 40 JOD if you don't have it. Next get insurance. I paid 27 JOD for minimum insurance for a month for a motorcycle. Not sure if more for a car? Now go to customs and pay 20 JOD for some custom document. Again, that was for a motorcycle.
All done. You can buy a sim card next to the money changer. 12 JOD for 12 GB or 14 JOD for 45 GB. Umniah was recommended.

Tip: make sure to fill up your vehicle with fuel on Iraqi side. Will save you a lot! Also, it's legal to bring in one liter of alcohol and it's much cheaper in Iraq. Same with cigarettes. Good luck :)

ATTENTION Jordan > Iraq:
because of the gaza conflict, the border got closed for tourists in shared taxis. You can not cross this border on foot, so hitchhiking is also not an option. dont know if the same applies for tourists in own cars. I lost 2 full days trying to cross this fogging border. And failed. Half of ruweished town tried to help me, but the officers didn't allow me to go to iraq. Rebels are striking on the iraqi side of the road and are considered to be dangerous for the tourists. This is something new, as only one month before (before the gaza crisis) the border was open for everyone. Better inform yourself good before coming here, its very far from everything.

From Jordan to Irak

1. Bring enough cash !

Jordan Side : 35 JOD exit tax for the vehicule and visa tax

Irak side :
77 USD for the Visa
150 USD for the bike and insurance

Cash for food and gas : there is no ATM until Baghdad

2. Be prepared for a long and unclear process on iraqi side

It took me 5 hours to clear the process on the iraqi side

Friendly staff: there is someone who will help you to move from place to place. There is tons of paper to be signed by many different people.

3. Spend the night there

I think the best option is to arrive there in the afternoon. complete the process by the evening and sleep there (in a tent or close to the mosq). Start early the next morning to make sure to arrive in Baghdad not too late.

Report Check-In

We arrived at the Jordanian border crossing at 16.30 and they refused to let us in. Border is closed in the afternoon.

Report Check-In

Border Jordan to Irak 5hours in total.

Jordan exit: 1h (pretty easy and straightforward. First small office in the middle of the car lanes under the shades, then customs (pay 25jd for road tax), then departure immigration.)

Iraq entry: 4h (chaotic and exhausting as every iraqi border)

First gate with quick car check.
Then drive to the shaded car inspection area. Quick car inspection & signature on CdP.
Then drive to customs (big building on the right with trees infront).
They will do some paper work and add your dates to the computer. You will get a white dinA4 paper.
Then go back to immigration (building on the left side coordinates next to big shaded area where you have been before). There they will do your visa. 77$ pP.
Then go to „land transportation“ office. Here you have to pay 100$ per car for temporary car importation (they don‘t take old dollar bills).
Next to the office (left door) is another small office where you have to bring copies of some of your documents (they can do the copies in the land transportation office).
Then go to the insurance near land transportation office. Car insurance 1 week 30.000dinar or 22$.
Then go back to customs.
Pay at the cashier 10$ or 15.000dinar road tax (First door on the left).
Then go to the „computer office“ next door on the right. There they will do some paper work and copies.
In another small office they will do paper work again.
Then go to the final office (big boss) to get your „gate pass“ - very important!! (Small paper).

You can exchange money and buy sim cards at the shops int he middle lane. (Sim card: 17.000dinar for 5gb/week (20gb/month). Attention they will try to scam you!

If it‘s late they won‘t let you go. The highway is closed during night.
So you have to camp at the border area.

Then continue to the gate. (Border will open at 7 am. but sometimes at 8 or 9)
Last car inspection at the first shade. They will do copies of your papers & documents again.
Then drive to the next shade - this is the last gate. Give them your passports and gate pass.
Then you are free to go.

Note: there is no right or wrong order. Sometimes you do the visa paper first, sometimes you do the customs papers first. It all depends on the staff and their motivation.
Take it easy. They are friendly. But be aware of scammers. And be prepared to spend A LOT of time at this border and to run from one office to the other. Everything is chaotic and without system.

Now during ramadan half of the staff were sleeping during day and a lot of offices were closed. So it was even more chaotic because they had to search and wake up the needed staff.

After about 1km there is the first check point. There they will decide if you need to be escorted or if you can go alone.

Everything like described before. Car insurence 40.000 one week. Money change JD and $ in the shops.

Visa on arrival USD 76 per person, manifest (TIP) USD 100, insurance USD 30, road tax (?) IQD 15000.
Money change in one of the shops in the border areas.
The road from the border to Baghdad is closed between 4 pm and 8 am.
We camped after the gate and started at 8 am with the commercial trucks.

Report Check-In

Important information for swiss people travelling from jordan to iraq: At the moment you can not get a visa on arrival here and also not a visa at the embassy of iraq im amman with a swiss passport. But the iraqi embassy can send your visa-application to bagdad to try it there. We did not do that because of a lack of time (they told us it will take around two weeks). Hopefully this problem will change in the future. It seems like iraq has some kind of a diplomatic problem with switzerland. But we still don't fully understand it. The swiss embassy in amman also couldn't help us, but they are informed now and will do some investigations on the case.

Jordan to Iraq (french passport)

Jordan : We had to pay 10JOD per person and 25JOD for the car to exit the country. All the process was easy but long because of the lunch time I guess... It took us 1 hour and half.

Iraq : We arrived at 1pm and finished the papers around 7pm so we were allowed to sleep at the border (with toilets next to us 👌).
It was not really stressful but really long. A fixer helped us and we literally running all around the offices during 6 hours. A lot of papers... Everyone is really helpful but they don't speak English, even the fixer so we didn't really understood all the steps.

We payed : 76$ per person for the visa on arrival (validity: 2 months)
100$ for the car at the customs
25$ for 1 month insurance (We negociated a lot)
15000 IQD for another paper.

PS : At the end, don't forget to ask the gate pass (It took us 1.5 hours to get it the next morning 😅).

This border is not visa on arrival anymore. We traveled from Turkey through Iraq to Jordan and then returned to Iraq assuming it was visa on arrival. We were lucky we had friends in Iraq we could call for help and got our visa at the border but the staff made it very clear to us that Iraq no longer provides visa's at this border, you need to get it in Amman.
