Description

Wow, not enough incredible things to say about this place and these people. The adventure starts the moment you hit the dirt road in San Geronimo and drive 20kms through the mountains of Parque Nacional Montaña de Comayagua to reach the community of Rio Negro (4x4 and high clearance highly recommended). The Velazquez Family owns an organic coffee farm (the brother of Avelio sells it in Minnesota!) and have opened up their beautiful land to folks to camp on. 75L per car per night. No bathrooms for campers (yet!) but they can open up one of their cabanas for you to use, if needed. No wifi but they do have electricity (not at sites). As of now, there are two areas to camp - near the river or at "the vista," which is flat and has an incredible view of the valley. Bertilia, the wife of Avelio, is also a great cook (vegetarian chorizo!) and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner for an extra cost. And when you're wanting something active, you can take a hike through dense forest up to two waterfalls: Los Ensueños (50 min) and La Gavilán (1.5 hours and ~70m tall!!). No need for a guide - the trail is well-marked. We spent here 4 wonderful nights here and when we weren't outside enjoying the forest we were drinking coffee w our new friends in their kitchen :)

Well worth finding this place. The drive was amazing, we did have to ask a few people on the way how to get to Rio Negro. No problem with our motorcycle, rainy season you would need a 4x4. Avelio and Bertilia were not here when we showed up, but the kids let welcomed us to the cabin. The next day the parents were home and welcomed us for dinner. Avelio gave us a tour of the finca. The coffee is great and the family is very welcoming. They only asked 200 limpera for two nights. The coffee, food and fresh eggs in the morning they did not want money for. Highly, highly recommend. Camping is possible on the property. I would email before coming if possible.

Fantastic place to camp with a fantastic family. Rio Negro is a little community. Avilio can you tell everything from how they make coffee. Bertilia is a teacher in the school of the community and our kids went a couple of days to school with her. there is a nice hike up to 2 waterfalls that you can do without a guide.
we really love this place and we recommend to go there , certainly if you have children. our kids loved this place so much that they didn't wanted to leave :-) For getting there you need 4x4 !!!
