Description

Reserve dedicated to protection of the Vicunas.

Small taxidermy museum where you pay 30 soles per person for a guided tour with a park volunteer who explains about all the wildlife of the Pampas. Spanish only.

If you have space in your vehicle, volunteers can go with you throughout the park to look for condors and Vicunas, included in museum entry.

Camping here is free if you pay the entry. Flush toilets and extremely cold showers. 4000m/13,000 ft elevation makes for some cold nights.

We paid for the wildlife museum, got a lovely tour from the Spanish speaking volunteer. Amazingly comical story about skunk's habit of wearing dried cow patties as hats on the full moon. Worth our money for the story.

Tons of road construction from here east towards Cusco. Multiple delays, including one of over 2 hours added a total of 4 hours to the trip. The road is nice though. Not a single pothole from Nazca to Abancay. Incredible!

What a beautiful place. We were the only tourists around and got such a wonderful treatment. We paid 30 soles each and got two days of adventure with the guides and volunteers. Took us out to watch the condors and vecunas in the evening. And spend a morning with them walking part of the reserve for 4 hours. Everybody is super friendly, very special experience. You can even sleep in there parking lot.

We hesitated at the cost (30 sol for foreigners) but 1 parent and child got in for that price. We visited the museum and learned about the wildlife from Mario in Spanish and it was well worth it. We were there June 6 he mentioned that there would be a round-up (chacca) of vicuña in the reserve that afternoon! He secured permission for us to ride along (in our own AWD rig) and we got to participate in a wild vicuña round up and shearing! AMAZING! Such a great experience to see so many from the community working together— reserve and Ayacucho Department staff, a vet, and many locals. The animals were unharmed and the young ones immediately released. The precious fur was sorted, marked and stored for sale. Everything was meticulously documented and we were lovingly welcomed! 30 sol well spent! The big day for this is approx June 24 each year and accommodates tourists. If you’re passing- don’t miss it!

Beautiful place, saw plenty of vicuñas and guanacos. Also did the condor viewing in the late afternoon which was very special.
This is a sweet place. Don’t forget to simply take a walk up into the pampa as far as you wish. It is a very peaceful experience.

This is a joint project between 5 South American countries and Germany. The museum contains many stuffed animals of this region and the guide explains everything. Then they offer side trips to see ruins, petroglyph cave, stone forest or condors. Some are a longer drive than we wanted to take. So we chose condor viewing at 4:30. We drove with the guide and a cyclist that arrived. High clearance needed, 4x4 in rainy season. We saw over 30 condors flying and sleeping. Guide has great binoculars, but they were visible and clear with bare eyes. We were glad we did it. If we spent more days here we would try the other sights too! And of course, many vicuñas, some guanacos and loads of knowledge. Well worth the stop!

Absolutely worth a stop. Everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable. Take a tour of the museum to learn a lot of interesting facts about the wildlife and culture around this area.

There is a baby vicuña at this place until December 2018. It gets a bottle of milk 3 times a day. You can feed this animal if there at the right time. Then, you might be able to hold it like we did! Top 5 Peru!

Report Check-In

This is a really nice place to visit with a small museum with photos, many stuffed local animals and birds and an explanation of the chaccu ceremony (muster for shearing the vicunas). You can also see many vicunas (type of small llama with very soft wool). All is free and the volunteer guides are very welcoming. A great place for picnic or lunch at comedor opposite, and would be a perfect place to stay if you are not affected by the altitude.
