Description

A great area directly on the Saskatchewan River with a lot of level places in the forest to stay for a few days (14 day limit).

There are no facilities so pack all trash out with you.

A car with high clearance is great but not needed. There are many tracks off the highway besides the very steep one.

An Alberta Public Land Camping permit is required, to be obtained beforehand (there is no cell coverage here) at https://www.alberta.ca/camping-on-public-land.aspx

Beautiful riverside spots off the David Thompson Hwy. We came on a Monday night around 8:30 pm and most spots were already taken. I can imagine it being extremely hard to find a spot on a weekend.

No need for 4x4. A couple of pit toilets for the area and plenty of bear lockers for tent campers to use.

No services so leave it clean and pack out all trash. Obviously bear country so store all food items and food prep items in a hard sided car/camper or use the bear lockers.

Pre-purchase an Alberta Camping Pass online before arriving. No services.

The entrance is between Saskatchewan River and Saskatchewan River 2 These places belong together. and are signposted as Wildhorse Creek Rustic Camping Area

We couldn't buy any beforehand. An officer gave us the information. Since there is no network coverage here and today is Sunday, we can still stop here. Very nice.. It's a very large expanded space, lots of places on the river. Really very nice. No picnic tables. Really clean toilets. The access routes are freshly made. What I don't think is great are the self-made fireplaces, which everyone builds everywhere. We have 6 hearths here on our place alone. A fire bin would be more appropriate.

Some of the places along the river are closed for maintenance. We stayed at 52.00146° N, 116.48829° W, where there are two spots. The water in the Saskatchewan river is from a glacier (and contains too much silt to be used for cooking or personal hygiene) but there is a very small stream with clear water available at mentioned coordinates. Permit costs about CAD 6 for the WiN (a digital ID) AND about CAD 20 for 3 days OR about CAD 35 for a whole year. All prices per person. We came in for one night but stayed two.

The sheriff came in the morning and informed us that the area is subject to a camping permit, available online.
Since there is no service here, it is better to get it before coming.

This is, by far, one of the nicest places to stay. There are a couple access points off of Hwy 11, one being marked as River Land Paradise on the map. We stayed at a riverside site with a firepit. Super quiet and scenic.

Great area, lots of room to camp and beautiful views.

This is a beautiful and free spot far enough off the road to enjoy peace and quiet right near the mountains and the river. It is within 15 minutes drive back into the National Parks, but on the outskirts so you don’t have to pay anything. There was plenty of space to find a nice spot, and the views were amazing. The road in the winter is very snowy and a bit bumpy but nothing crazy if you have 4wd. There are no bathrooms or fire pits since it’s a wild spot, but I definitely recommend it. We woke up to a ton of wildlife footprints surrounding our truck, so I would bet you’d see some pretty cool stuff if you hung out long enough.

Disappointed this was Inaccessible in my 2WD van. But it had been raining, leaving huge tire ruts and mud holes. Definitely need high clearance 4WD!

Breathtaking. fire rings, river, pretty well kept. Please leave it better than upon arrival :) Be bear aware!!!

Really nice place with plenty of spots. There were several other campers just out of sight on a week day in late June. The river is beautiful and with a high clearance vehicle you can get far enough away from the road as to not hear it. Highly recommend this place.

Beautiful location with many options to camp for the night with or without firepits. I have a rear wheel ford van and managed to get in fine, it was a little bumpy but fine if you take it slow.

really nice spot by the river. lots of tree coverage to block the wind. great spot for free camping. serval different locations around this marker point.

Simply a prime spot!!! Lots of fantastic spots w/access from that very same dirt road, all with fire ring and river view (sometimes access, but very fast flowing). Near to no mosquitoes, sunny with some trees, quiet, grand views and the sound of the river. Well know and used by locals for a short holiday.

Great spot. close to the national park, free and quiet- perfect!

Fantastic spot. Great view. Got in fine with my 2wd van. One of the best spots of the trip so far

Hard to choose from that many nice campsites. :) eveybody will find a place. Just drive along the river. For some passages high clearance recommended.

One of our favorite river campsites. Actually met a local couple who lives four hours away and have been coming there for decades, so I suppose we're not alone in our sentiments! Beautiful views, lots of spots so crowds weren't an issue when we were there. High clearance definitely recommended. We're in a 87' Vanagon with a lift and 16" tires but it's only 2WD and we were fine. @darthvanagon on IG if you want more details. Fire pits are nice, no utilities or toilets although we did find an outhouse someone built out of plywood that was actually very nice. About 20 minutes east of the Banff entrance.

Report Check-In

This place trumps by far all the camp sites in Jasper and Banff. And its free. No need of 4X4 as listed here on that other check-in. Even high clearance its not really needed. Just drive slow and you will be fine. Plenty of places to choose from where to park. Many old stone ring fireplaces around.

Report Check-In

A great area with a lot of very very nice place to stay for a view days. Direct on the River with fireplace. Free. Car with high clearence recomendet.

Mega Platz! Mit so viel Auswahl an tollen plätzen das es schwer fällt sich zu entscheiden. Direkt am Fluss mit Feuerstellen. 4x4 ist nicht nötig aber hohe Bodenfreiheit.
