Description

Update Aug 2022: Sometime between when this pin was created and now, the level of the lake has increased by at least 3 meters. flooding a small section of road and I assume the lake trail. there is no longer a trail around this lake and if there was it would be at least 12km now.
.....
Beautiful spot right at the lake. several opportunities. lots of fireplaces but only few woody areas. Hikes around the laguna(4km) and up to Fuya, 3.6 km roundtrip 520 elevation gain. Road sealed all the way to the lake.

we stayed on a weekend and it was VERY busy. at least 30 cars parked at any given moment. the main parking area was overflowing with cars and tents and people set up tents not 3 feet from our car, probably as a wind brake as it's very windy up here. one night had a generator to power the insane music until after 3am. maybe it's cool on a weekend but I absolutely would not come here on a weekend. when we got here the level of the lake was at least 2 meters higher than usual and swamped the road to get to this pin. the cobblestone road continues under water without holes and bumps to get to the other side. about 40cm deep. we crossed over here to get more privacy and away from the rude campers.

Got here on the Tuesday of Carnival so there were locals during the day but by sunset I was the only one there. Super quiet and peaceful night and morning.

Found the way thanks to michaeljoss. Do not use Google Maps to get to the Laguna. Google sends you all the way south about 30 minutes from Otavalo. At Tabacundo there are even signs directing to the Laguna. Don‘t. There is an easy almost good cobblestone road directly from Otavalo that reaches the Laguna from north west. Great place by the way. Remember to take your rubbish with you please.

Arrived on a Sunday afternoon and there were definitely people here wrapping up their weekend activity. Took a hike around the lake and returned at sunset.
By 8 pm the last lovebirds have left too and we were bu ourselves. Very peaceful quiet night, listening to the lake.
Did the Fuya Fuva Volcano hike in the morning.
Beautiful place!

Here is how you get here from otovalo(as mentioned road is not on google or maps.me, but you can find on Gaia):
-going south, at the end of otovalo ,just before a sharp left turn of the panamericana take right turn into Pedro Alarcon
- take the second left Vincente Larrea
- when it doesnt go straight anymore go left and then stay right ,which brings you back to the plaster road .
- then follow the plaster road for 13km to the Laguna .
- take the left road along the lake til it ends.
road is fine for buses, taxis, cars anything with a little bit of ground clearance.

Beautiful freecamp, near to the Lagune, with an incredible view ! Very quiet, calm, safe and natural place.

Super beau freecamp, au bord de la
Lagune, avec une vue incroyable ! Vraiment calme, tranquille, secure et en pleine nature.

Great location. The road in is truly rock which makes it bumpier than cobblestone. It is well worth the drive in. Plan to spend two nights so you have time to climb the mtn.

One of the best free camp.in ecuador for us. Came friday no soul around, we had storm and make that place pretty scary during the night but in good way 😀

So peaceful! Beautiful. Great wild camp spot directly on the lake. Note you can drive down directly south from Otavalo, even though the road is not marked on Google maps. Good cobblestone road the whole way.

stayed here tue-wed. nobody else here, great hike, no problems leaving the car here during the hike.
if you consider driving to the archeological site from here be aware that this is some serious off roading, we barely made it! if think the road around the lake via the established campsite is in a better state, but to be on the safe side, just drive back to otovala.

We had a great time here. Got here Friday evening, left Sunday afternoon. People definitely visit during he weekend, but nothing that interrupted our stay. We camped at the end, right by the water. No mosquitos or any bugs. Pretty chilly. We hiked up to Fuyu Fuyu the first morning, took 2 hours, definitely leave as early as you can as the clouds do roll in by mid morning. Very steep hike, but rewarding. We tried hiking around the lake the second morning, but it is very overgrown and we lost trail not even half way and decided to turn around after bush whacking for awhile.

Gorgeous lake surrounded by craggy peaks, and great camping (3,700m) right next to lake. No mossies at this time if year.
We came from the north and it was about 16km cobbled road. Steep at times but reasonable condition. No problem in our RWD Roadtrek, although was dry.

We have a 2wd 2013 Kombi and to get to this place was a bit hard for us. It had been raining for the last couple of days. We came from the south entrance and the roads were nota paved, steep and not in a Very good condition. Once we got to the lagunas we couldnt reach the spots marked on ioverlander because the road around was pure mud, only reached the other parking Lot marked on ioverlander and they wanted to charge
4.5dolars for camping. Besides that, very beautiful lagunas

Really great spot right on the lake with epic views! pull over anywhere you like as you'll most likely have the place to yourself. We drove until the road ends and had a really quiet night. Lots of spots to make a fire too.

Report Check-In

Had to park on wide section in the road close to shelter and map signs since lake level high and grassy berms are covered with water as well as road that continues around lake edge.
Mosquitos and small flies abound. Gray and foggy.

Beautiful spot towards the end of the road. Fire pits. Beautiful hikes around (see map in photos). Quiet but cold night!

Beautiful spot on the lake. For tent camping, we found several cleared areas on the elevated bank above the lake. Highly recommend the hike up to Fuya Fuya. Trail takes you to a split between peaks. Small rock scramble to get up to the peak closest to lake (right) but flat area and amazing views at the top. 1.5 hour hike. Weather changes rapidly here.

Beautiful spot right on the lake. Hidden from main road. Tons of mosquitos when we stayed because there are lots of small pools with stagnant water. Nobody around. FREE.

Great spot for a night, before heading north to colombia. Can get cloudy, due to the elevation. Road is paved (cobblestone) all the way. Free, super quiet. Lovely spot!

Amazing for walking when the weather is good! The clouds move so fast, like at Quilotoa lake. Quite easy walk until then other side.
