Description

This stretch around this position is the most difficult on the way from Sucre to Torotoro. It is a 1000mts descent (coming from Sucre), partly very steep, loose, relatively sharp rocks and some minor rockslides. But we got thru without any problems (Toyota Landcriuser). North of the bridge over Rio San Pedro (few kms further on), on the ascent to the village Carasi (basic supplies) it is again very steep and there it is easier to get up with a high clearance vehicle. IN GENERAL: only attempt it in DRY conditions. The entire track is a built road, a sturdy 2WD can make it, we did not need 4x4, but drove mostly in low range. There is NOT one single spot where you could loose the track or get stuck cause of soft sand or so. Even a truck (good driver essential) will get thru (track is wide enough, no overhanging rocks). You will find every 10kms or so a good flat, tranquil campspot. You will pass many tiny villages, we crossed on the entire way only 2 cars. It took us 1,5 days for the entire 180kms.

Latest Check-Ins

Torotoro to Sucre: Not possible to go this route. The road from Torotoro was quite nice but the bridge over the San Pedro river ended in rubble. No chance of getting through with any vehcile. No signs or warnings ahead of time. No workers around... looks like it will be a long time before it's open.

First of all : thank you to Ranamundo for this post. Thanks to them, we did a really nice journey driving this track.
It took us 2 days from Toro Toro to Sucre driving slowly. We have a Unimog and going down and up around the river at this point was really not a problem.
Here the villages we passed by : Toro Toro (from here to the first pass, the track is not so good but doable), Carasi, Viru Viru, Thola Pampa, Soicoco Alto (between Soicoco Alto and Poroma, we had to pass few rivers beds and the track was gone with the heavy rainfall of the day before. In this case, you really need a 4x4 and high clearance), Poroma, Yanani (from here to Sucre, the track is really good), Irocota, San Juan de Orcas, Challa, Chaururo, Siete cascadas, Sucre.
We took three times locals with us and it was a really nice experience and meeting. People are so great up here and they are happy to talk with strangers about their country.

As described. We drove from Toro Toro, the reverse of the described route, and can verify that with going uphill 4x4 could be quite helpful, depending on driver skill.
