Nice Spots in the trees by Nelchina River. It's a old Campground. Now its for free.
Easy access via a bitumen and gravel road for even the largest motorhomes. Few potholes but nothing to worry a sensible driver. All sites large, level and screened from other sites. Perfect.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
First two or three sites skip most of the potholes, other sites are prettier though. Barely any road noise and the place is just beautiful. Yes, potholes are present and bad, but you can do it if you're careful. Respect the spot.
Duplicate entries here on iOverlander, could be meeged into one.
Report Check-Injust like others have said. cro7ss the tbridge and go to the left down hill. we are pulling a 30 fr airstream and the pothole up by the river sits are not bad it further along the7 way the get worse. 9W 9W then
we walked around and most sites seem for smaller units.
one on the right coming in and two by the river for larger rigs.
when wet this could be tricky as the hill has some rise in it.
Report Check-InJust as described. I remember this campground from the past. You could see campers down here as you drove by. Not sure when it was decommissioned but it’s been awhile from the looks of things. We have a 4X4 Sprinter so potholes weren’t an issue, but their pretty bad. Just go real slow. We had a lovely spot that was private and overlooked the river. Kind of a strange eery vibe this time of year… like a ghost campground. We were all alone. All in all another great find for one night thanks to iOverlander.
Report Check-InLoop road that is large enough for 30TT's. Mine is a 2600 (30'ft) overall and I fit great. Wonderful gem right by river. This place would be $100 a night in Seward. Potholes? Yes...but take it slow. These spots are all back in.
Report Check-InFormer campground no longer maintained. 8 nice sites for tents and smaller RVs. 2 outhouses(not maintained) and no water. Very quiet off the road. NOTE: need to make turn to the north from Glenn Hwy around MM 138 and go over bridge. Camp by the river.
Report Check-Invery nice place, river noise, lots of trees, road at beginning fine, first places ok for bigger rigs, at 5pm we are alone, at 11pm we were 6 cars.
Report Check-InVery beautiful spot! Roads with deep pot holes just go slow. No one there all night but us. vault toilet was clean .
Report Check-InNo Verizon service in the campground but I did have reception on the highway, only a few feet away.
Report Check-InBless all of you beautiful, curious, adventurous souls that decide to take the ugly gravel route down an unknown adventure road to find gems like these.
There are a LOT of potholes. Road is in very poor condition but it is indeed a free quiet campsite along a beautiful, calming river. There were 3 other sites taken on a Thurs Aug 2021.
It does look like someone maintains the area, or maybe it is just user-maintained. Did not use the toilets, so cannot speak for their cleanliness.
There is a yellow sign at the front saying to keep dogs on leash.
Excellent quiet, private old Alaska State Parks campground now abandoned, so it’s free. Twelve unnumbered pull in sites, most with rock fire rings. Some will accommodate more than one vehicle. First site on right as you come down hill is paved. Clean privies actually useable (bring your own tp). Unimproved boat launch. (Note warning sign about logjams posted 6/11/2021). Several riverside campsites suitable for tents and campers as well as many in the trees shady camp sites. It appears that someone may be trying to do minimal maintenance and cleaning. Please leave it cleaner than you found it. I would not drive a big rig or a trailer to this campground.
Report Check-InIOverlander for the victory once again!
Thanks to this community for helping me find places like this. Slept right on the river. Still here now, watching the water flow.
I didn’t use the bathrooms or need any amenities so I have no comment on that, but as I’m driving across Alaska looking for hidden gems to sleep at, this is definitely a winner. Cheers all! Happy traveling!
Report Check-InGreat spot! Just as described above. Couple other Overlander here but very private and quiet. Right by the river with amazing views. Sleeping to the sound of the river running.
Report Check-InCamping at the Little Nelchina River at an abandoned Campground. There are many private sites. The pit toilets are not perfect but still usable. Nearly no traffic noise.
Report Check-InNice place, totally empty. So we had to select the "right" spot: direct at the river, 180deg panoramic. Simply great! A place to stay ...
Report Check-InOdd old campground. We got a spot right on the river and it was nice to fall asleep to the sound of the water. The area is not really maintained but it is in decent shape. There were a few other campers in the area, and it seemed safe and used. Good nights sleep, no road noise at all. The road has a lot of potholes (filled with water while we were there), but even a well-clearanced 2WD should be fine if you take your time.
Report Check-InDoesn't get much better than this. Clear-to-the-bottom rushing river, well off the main road and no passing traffic. Good bitumen/gravel road in passable by even a 40 foot motorhome with just a few potholes needing you to slow down. Choice of sunny or shaded sites and all are nice and flat. Spots for tents too. Original toilets are still here and one looks fully useable.
Report Check-InAs described, several flat places at old state Recreation campground- now for free, we had lot’s of privacy and a calm night, it’s a bumpy road but 4WD is definitely not necessary
Report Check-InNice campground, with a lot of locals. A 4wd may be usefull to access it...
Report Check-InCould be a nice place if you find an available spot. In the summer is crowded by locals. The dirt road is very bumpy.
