Description

Ferry to Bocas Del Toro. Motorcycle is 10$ for one way. Van $55. Operates every day. From what I understand, there are two ferries and only two departure times, 6am and 11am. Passengers cost nothing, pets welcome. Large box trucks and semi's were on the ferry, very high clearance. there is a little shop with a small offering of drinks and food on the ferry.

3$ ferry for cyclists, don’t get scammed and come here, there is a lot of people trying to charge you 11-15$

No problem to take the camper to Bocas. Many places to sleep on the island and the roads are currently under construction and are getting better day by day. Slept the night in line to take the early morning ferry. Talk to a few locals, they said: it‘s safe but make sure that it’s clear that you‘re inside the car, because sometimes people try to break in the empty cars at night.
Ferry leaves every day (see pic with schedule)

SCAM: Do not pay anything until you are about to drive on the ferry. there are scammers who will tell you to pay in the line, for the line, etc. We were scammed out of $60

Cyclists:
Ferry was very cheap ($3pp inc bike) and easy (roll on, roll off) - we recommend taking this car ferry rather than one of the smaller boats that go from the middle of town.

It's slower (1h40) but a very smooth journey compared to the bumpy little 10-seaters. This ferry has a covered seating area upstairs where you can get a good meal etc.

SCAM WARNING - on arrival in Almirante we were stopped in the road by the guys selling tickets for the smaller boats (they literally ran out into the road to stop us) who told us there was no ferry today, it had already left, it was full etc. and that we should go on their boat instead for $6pp. We politely declined and said we'd check out the main ferry first - of course it hadn't left and had loads of space for us. Bocas was well worth the visit, just take care in Almirante town - it wasn't a nice place.

We travel with an 8-meter camper. We left it in Storage at dicki right next door and we took the ferry on foot for free on the way and back! With the vehicle it would have done in the $120 round trip. On the island we paid $30 a night for 4 in a youth hostel with breakfast (booking by Booking.com). Be careful the roads are very bad on the island outside the city mainly of Bocas (sandy and muddy tracks with holes) and the descent of the ferry to Bocas and very steep (even the big construction trucks touched)

We took the ferry with our 2 bicycles.
There is only 2 ferry per day to Bocas : 7am and 12:30. Do come early because sometime it leaves before the hour! No reservation needed.
We paid $3pp for the bike. (We didn’t pay anything coming back). It takes around 1:40 to reach Bocas

got there just before dark. helpers were following me on bikes since I passed through the center of the ghetto town. the line is along the left side of the road leading to the port/bar. park in the line and lock your doors! at around midnight a guy was tapping on Windows trying to sells masks (and also see if people are in vehicles and tried to open my door) make sure you say no gracias so he knows your there and doesn't try to break in. at about 6am the ferry guy waved me on, ahead of the 4 trucks in front of me because he wanted me to fill a spot. $55 for panel (E150 van) pay cash only. departs 7 days check website for up to date times.

Showed up at 6:45AM on a motorbike with my girlfriend for the 7:00 ferry. Drove around the line and they found a small spot for my bike. Cost $10. They serve coffee and a basic breakfast on board. Well worth it to have a motorbike on the island.

Report Check-In

Arrived at 22:15 on tuesday evening to cross on Wednesday.
Slept in line on the roof top tent. Pretty noisy but was ok.

Just to clarify some comments, THE LINE MATTERS, rest in line, it’s the same for trucks and cars, whatever your size.
They are filling the boat depending on the sizes so, yes, the first in line is not the first to board, but he will be the first to board for his size, don’t try to overpass the line “to be seen”, they are coming all over the line to tell the cars to come in, even in creepy weather (it was heavy rain in our case). Just stay calm, polite and wait your turn (even after a bad night 🤪)
We were far on the line and boarded at 6:30 and a car which arrived in the morning and was even farer in the line and boarded with us too.

Paid 42$ for our truck + 2 adults + 2 kids.

Just learn some Spanish and everything will be fine, yes it counts to be in the line and is very important because they walk around and organize how they are going to accommodate every car, it is amazing how people just write anything just because they assume, if you are not in line or the line is to long you may don't go in, we sleep in line Monday and Tuesday we where in ,you have to talk with the guys with orange clothes they will explain when you go .

Report Check-In

Paid 55$ for our small RV and we got a receipt. We slept in the line and actually bought a place in front for 13$ from a truck driver that left his truck in line, but it didn’t change anything i think since the big trucks go in first and little cars once in a while to fill small space on the boat. We went in front and we were told to wait on the side until they have a spot for us. After reading all the comments here we tried another technic to actually see what was going on. So no the line change nothing because some
truck just stay parked there all the time so be sure to be in front to be seen !!!

We parked after 6pm, queue was long since it was Monday night and on Monday is the only day that ferry don't work. So Tuesday ferry is more demanded. We didn't crossed at 7am. We have to wait for second turn at 12 noon. Paid 50 dollars one way for a truck camper .
El ferry del martes a la mañana es muy demandante y que los lunes no trabaja. No llegamos a pasar a las 7am y tuvimos que esperar al turno de las 12. Pagamos 50 dólares ida por una pickup camper.

Here's how it works. Arrive at the ferry terminal the evening before around 5 or 6pm. You will see a cue of vehicles big and small parked along the left side of the road. Find a spot in the cue and park. You can sleep in your rig overnight. Safe. There is a restaurant/bar right there with a bathroom. In the morning around six you will see people rushing the ferry. Your position in line makes no difference. Just pull out and drive onto the boat. The crew will direct you where to park. There is a cart selling coffee and empanadas for breakfast. I was charged $45 USD for myself, my van and my dog.

Get there early! We got to the ferry at 6:40AM in the morning and the ferry was fully loaded and left.

Decided to stop by and ask for a price to take my truck/trailer to bocas (11.5 meter length, 2.5m width). The measurements were not if any interest to him... he took one look and said it would be $100 each way.

Report Check-In

We took our pickup and homemade camper over for $40 each way. When we arrived we asked to sleep on ferry. The boss that day said no. We herd that there is a guy that does say yes. Maybe worth asking. We were told to get in line. We got in line just 4 trucks back and slept in the line. There is always a lot of traffic and most of the trucks in line are work trucks. We used the restaurant next to the gas station on the waterfront for a bathroom, closes at 8 or 9pm. Had a few $1 beers there for this service. We were told our car was pretty safe in the line. We still kept checking on it, and our dog was in it, so who could say. The next morning they were letting trucks that were way behind us in line onto the ferry before us. I don't think the line matters too much. We nearly didn't make it on. We kept hassling the boss and just barely got on. Our friends did the same thing as us and didn't get on the morning ferry (different day). So sleeping in line does not guarantee a spot on the morning ferry, but probably helps.

Report Check-In

The first ferry leaves from main land at 7AM, second one at 1230.

We arrived after it came back from the last trip from the Bocas. We spoke to one of the men in charge, and he said there was no problems for us to just sleep on the ferry overnight. Parked our bikes and slept inside the passenger area. Two guards on shift every night, and another delivery truck doing the same. Felt safe and secure, offered free coffee and treated well.
