I will say, the long steep hill you have to pass to get here was traumatizing for my little Promaster. My foot was on the floor trying to climb and I nearly hit a stand still. I don’t know how people were able to get here pulling trailers. It’s not impossible, but it sucked! If I had more weight I probably wouldn’t have made it. Once you climb the hill it’s smooooooth sailing - pretty flat, easy dirt roads, and lots of open land.

If there’s someone in front of you, I would recommend waiting until they reach the top before you start climbing. You want the momentum and you don’t want to risk having to break or take your foot off the gas because the person in front was too slow.

Great spot! Came in around 7pm and landed in one of the first spots we found. Got a nice visit from cows and chipmunks. Pretty busy with people but would come back! Also, the initial hill is pretty steep but our 2wd van made it up so don’t sweat the road

Report Check-In

Beautiful views. But decided not to stay since it appeared to be pretty busy. Slow going to find a spot. Probably worth it if you have activities in the area during your stay. Just passing through.

real nice view, great cell service.
I was very skeptical about coming here bc of all the reviews about a very hard access but it's really not that bad ( been through worst) after you climb the hard steep way in, it's not bad. I'm pulling a trailer and just took it slow.

Spot 3520c - beautiful views and nice burn ring with grill. Kind of a big hill to climb up but once on top it’s awesome!

Once again we picked this location but stayed in a different spot. Very quiet, not a lot of bugs out this time. A little busier this time too. The rock hills were fun to play on. We found a site big enough for three vehicles and three tents. The closer you can find camping to Gunnison the better your service is. 5G and two bars of signal at this site. Just be prepared for some wind because you are out in the open. Still one of our favorite camp spots because of service and convenience to Gunnison for gas and groceries. Very quiet spot once the sun started to set.

This is the west entrance. On a Friday night, there were several camping sites open. Not as scenic as near the rocks, but a signal. Sites have picnic tables and fire ring. Road is very easy.

Lots of camp spots! We picked one with a beautiful view. It is a little windy and the mosquitoes are out so be prepared. There is also some broken glass in the camp site and some trash in the fire pit (mostly aluminum cans). The spot we chose is pretty level and easy to get to. Very quiet. Great service with T-Mobile, 5G with two bars. Vault toilets are located in the parking lot at the base camp.

Quiet camp spot, vault toilets are located near the base camp. Mosquitoes are out, just be prepared. A little windy since it is a pretty open spot. But the views are amazing. Really peaceful. Great service with T-Mobile, 5G with two bars. There is some broken glass on the site so just be careful. As well as some trash in the fire pit (mostly aluminum cans).

Camping here is currently closed due to muddy conditions

What a rad place! Tons of sites, just have to explore to find one you fancy! Had cell service whole time and a great view both for sunrise and sunset, plus some great stars at night! Most roads are 2WD passable, some I’d definitely recommend high clearance as parts of the road are rutted pretty good or have some large rocks. The hill up is no joke as mentioned before, but absolutely do-able with any vehicle.

Report Check-In

Very comfortable and easily accessed with our low clearance 2wd car. Many spots for tents. Didn't see any bigger RVs so not sure if it's appropriate for those.
Good cell reception as well. The one drawback was a huge party of drunken children who kept all of us awake till 2am. Awful experience but I don't think it reflects on the spot in general. Still, it does seem rather busy.

Beautiful views and quite a few sites! the main road through Hartman Rocks is a well maintained dirt road. There are sites that are off the main road, and you'll need 4wd for some of those. We would definitely stay here again!

Looks like we’re on the moon! Beautiful spot

Fantastic spot. Road up is very steep and rutted though. Made it up in my truck camper but it was a bit white knuckled.

Follow GPS to Hartmann Rocks Rec area. This is a BLM Mountain Bike Park with dispersed camping. Many many spots all free. Did see some small motorhomes make it in. Not good I’m wet weather.

Report Check-In

No access to the camping due to snow and mud.

BLM camping in designated spots.
Really nice spots with great views in the middle of trails. The road up is bumpy on the second half but we made it easily with our standard size RV. Nearly all sites should be accessible without 4x4 or high clearance but I would recommend arriving with enough daylight to be able to scout a little. Few toilets, no water, at&t reception was good. Oh and it is for free! Probably crowded on weekends with moto Cross riders.

Awesome location! We’ll be back! We were able to make it in and around with our 2WD Sprinter. Vault toilets and well water (hand pump) at the entrance. Portajohns throughout.

Campsite M2, not amazing but a nice stop on the way to RM overland rally

Report Check-In

High above Gunnison you cam camp for free at Hartman Rocks a sportsmen’s paradise. Amazing views, great bouldering, and lots of fun trails. Keep an eye on the weather, we got pounded by hail!

Report Check-In

This place is great. Very clean, friendly people and miles and miles of Moto trails, hiking trails and biking trails. Road is a bit washboard and steep but I believe a good driver wouldn't need 4wd. Big Rigs would fit, and there is plenty of space between campsites. It's free and there is strong 4g network with Verizon and TMobile.

Report Check-In

Beautiful free tent camping sites scattered over granite country, rd is 4wdriveable/bikes, picnic tables, fire pits, clean.. great find just outta town.
