The battle goes on. Lapais road seems to have a long history of a battle between the less fortunate population and the local more well off population. Dating back prior to 2015, Lapais Road just off the HWY 1 north of Marina has become a line of camper vans, rv's and other vehicles that are either short term or long term residents. More or less, it is a strip of road that has become a homeless camp.
The locals hate it, but those living there need it. They have no place to go. In early 2017, the Marin County tried to clean it up and move people along. It had become home to abandoned vehicles, garbage and waste. So, the residents of Lapais road tried to clean up and ensure they had a brighter future at home alongside the HWY.
Today, there are still plenty of vehicles parked as overnighters or long term stay. There are small camps of vehicles lumped together, and there are a couple groups that may prefer their solitude but the road is long and with plenty of flat spots.
Be sure that if you do stay the night here, to be kind and courteous to these neighbors, and of course Leave No Trace of your visit. The people trying to call this home do not need another problem.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Have been looking into this area for a while and last I have found, were articles from July 2017 indicating that the sheriffs office had put up "no overnight parking" signs closer to the town of Marina.
We had no problems here, nor did we see any sons along the stretch where we parked (the end closer to HWY 1). Will update the description, and add a couple more pictures.
Report Check-InWe spent a night here. One end of it looks really rough, but the road is really long and the other end - near the nature trail - was much cleaner and nice and quiet. We had a lovely safe relaxing night. Overall there were probably about 40 RVs here.
Report Check-InSide of the road. Plenty of RV (some really old rig probably here all year)
Stayed 2 nights
Really quiet even if near the street and the highway. Railroad closed so no train
une nuit ici, pas mal de camping car, proche du freeway mais parfait pour ne pas deranger et ne pas etre derange
Report Check-InMore than 20 stoneage RV and some cars. The road has NO signs but the county tolerates all the have-not's. Friendly and quite people! We slept here 3 nights and visited all the places around (Carmel-by-the sea, Monterey, Salinas with the Steinbeck Museum). Unfortunatly some people leave their trash, so maybe it will be closed in future?
Report Check-InCamping along a very quiet road.
Not very nice, but perfect for a night. Legal and free. Many RV's there.
