Description

We got an insurance for Argentina plus Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile and Peru (which we don't need) for 4 months. Shorter insurance periods or less countries are not possible. Payed about 1400 Pesos. This is the next insurance from the border of Villazon, 25 pesos with a taxi. There is lunch break between 1pm and 4:30pm. We made the contract before 1 but had to wait until 5:30pm to get the police. There are several other insurance agencies in town so you could also try to get something cheaper somewhere else.

The only place in town that would sell insurance for foreign plates. There is no name outside, just a small yellow sign that says "Pago facil" Quick and easy, friendly staff. They asked for the title along with the passport number and date of birth of the vehicle owner. For our 2000 jeep cherokee it cost $312 Argentinean pesos for one month. They offered us either one month or 4 months.

Arrived Saturday morning at the border. They couldn’t sell me insurance because it is BMW and as the insurance as a convenio with the brand they could sell it only on Monday when main office in BS.Aa is open. Was there at 9 on Monday. Guy arrived 9:45 and had a policy for 4 months in all Mercosur at noon. Cost 640 pesos, less than $10. No other insurer in town sells foreign plates.

They now sell only 4 months (why 4?) for 3000 pesos (53 USD today)...
They are friendly but let us wait 1h30 in the office just for the only guy who knows to come back and tell us that...
Definitely worth to have an international insurance before or to insist at the border that your car is to old to do the process. Don't waist your time here if the 4 months option doesn't suit you. The guy at the border was sceptical but did the paper anyway.

Other infos: You couldn't do it online without a MercoSur ID... Every insurance ask for your DNI, CI, LE or LC number.
Apparently the police doesn't mind for your insurance so you can drive to Huamahuaca or Santiago de Juji without risking a fine.

This office was closed on a Saturday afternoon, and a neighbouring man who’s home I accidentally walked into told me he was pretty sure it wouldn’t be open until Monday. In despair, I turned to Google. Don’t waste time going into town! Just use this simple link! Select the mandatory insurance for foreign vehicles option and get your proof of insurance via email in minutes. I paid $25 USD for one month on my 2018 KTM. I tried to get insurance for my 1970 VW Beetle. It is too old to be insured here.
If you have a younger car and there is a lane at the entrance just go inside to the left counter. The other people do something different here.

It costs 439 ARS now, crazy. You should get an insurance before or change dollars.

What an ordeal to get insurance at the border for a country where it is mandatory. Do yourself a favor and get insurance in Potosi or Sucre before crossing this border or get to the border at 8am so you can start getting your insurance here before noon. We had to stay in La Quiaca 24 hours to get insurance here.

Paid 500 ARS for 4 months for a DR650. includes Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil.

One thing: I arrived at 12 noon and the guy said that the Buenos Aires office (foreign vehicles need central office approval) was closed until 1p but that this office closed for lunch at 1p. He stayed a little late to get it done so I was lucky. If the Buenos Aires office didn't get it done quickly at 1p the I would have had to wait until 5p according to the agent.

Crossed 14 country's from Canada to here and I have to say they made me crazy !
First on week end no possibility to purchase an insurance for foreigner car. I went and ask to 5 different and no one could deliver us one!!!
We finally could manage with the boss to deliver us a paper as we are going to spend just 2 days un Argentina .
Was thinking to get in a more modern country I was wrong !!!
this was the worst border crossing of all .
Honduras and Salvador were much easier than this horrible border

We got here during the weekend (Saturday, open until 1pm). Gustavo Uro was very friendly and forthcoming. He mentioned that because of the weekend he was only able to get me 1 month of insurance, at 375 pesos. Taxi to here was indeed 25 pesos still.
