Description

Arriving on a busy sunday we had to pay 10000.-/p.p. to enter the indigena area south (volcano) and east from here. As well you have to hire a guide (35000.-/day) if you intend to see the sights like lookouts, waterfalls and so on. Either you take the guide into your vehicle or he follows you with his motorbike. If you head further east you will enter the Purace NP. On its official website foreigners have to pay 23000.-/p.p. entrance fee. The indigenas told us that we do NOT have to pay this fee. We do not know what is true because we decided to skip this Circus and head back to Popayan. If you tell them that you are heading straight to La Plata in the east without stopping you are excempt from these fees. The indigenas were patroling the area, so chances that you would get seen while visiting the sights (illegally) were high. In our opinion this is just a profitable and easy way to make some money, something we did not want to support.

Latest Check-Ins

I couldn’t find any up-to-date info on this volcano or national park online, so I ended up doing a lot of research and messaging people.

The volcano hike hasn’t been open for a couple of years. The park is run by the indigenous community, so the Colombia government website for the park has it marked as ‘closed’… but it’s not closed entirely.

As of last week, access to the park has been restricted to only Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. No entry Monday-Friday. Dogs are allowed in the park, but must remain in your vehicle.

Here is a number to message Purace Administration on WhatsApp for up-to-date info on closures and available hikes. I’ll copy and paste some in Spanish below, and hopefully it helps others. +573188215460

As of now, La Ruta del Mansajero del Sol is the only thing that’s really open. It’s a drive through the park, stopping at various points and walking for a bit, then returning to the vehicle. You need a guide. You can take your own vehicle, but a guide on a motorcycle will be assigned to you.

Messages below:

Report Check-In

Entrance fee is 40.000 pp. Guide to hike volcano Purace is 35.000 per group and is mandatory. Price is negotiable if you want to call the manager. Staff could not explain the price-raise. In rainy conditions path is supposed to be muddy and sight very cloudy.
We did not do it.

Report Check-In

From the 1st of June 2017 the price for foreigners is 40000 in the weekends and 20000 during the week (after bargaining). They (the indigenous council) alleged the increase of the price was because there was too much people coming and they were destroying the nature and the money they collect wasn't enough to do maintenance. The ranger told us that now they receive 10 times less people, do the math.
