Description

Great sites in the Box Canyon National Forest, access via HEY 60 west, take left at the sign. Our site was on a flat spot with fire rings, near the end of the dirt road where the trailhead to the canyon starts. More sites further but the trail is very rough and require high clearance 4WD and preferably with a second vehicle.

Latest Check-Ins

Stayed close to the trail into the north box canyon in the parking lot with vault toilet. Decent verizon service- enough to stream with a booster. Rained overnight, and the road getting out was very slick and muddy. It was fine with and awd dually transit with snow & mud tires, but a guy in a front wheel drive Ram tried to get out and failed. He had to stay another night.

The Box is dope. Stayed two nights at the furthest camp spot on the road. A little traffic throughout the day. It’s a pretty popular hiking, biking, birding, and climbing spot. There’s sport, trad, tr, and bouldering if you’re into climbing. Multiple pullouts and spots to spread out when camping. Road isn’t too bad but I imagine crossing the wash could be pretty gnarly after it gets up after rains. Seems they grade it afterwards so it isn’t bad. Just take your time and drive like ya got sense.

Spotty cell service ATT/Verizon, but if you want it you can find it.

Main Box parking lot is flat, large, has a pit toilet and portopotty, and a trash can. Rock fire rings at some of the other spots/pullouts but make sure you abide by fire regulations.

This place is great. It’s about a 10 minute drive off of i10. Very quiet. No cell service but that wasn’t a big deal. Because it’s a destination place for bouldering and climbing fanatics, it made it kind of interesting to brush up with that subculture of people. Also, I’ve always found that climbers are all about going to bed early and creating zero drama so I felt very safe there. The only drama was created by my dog who’s leash slipped out of my hand and she went running after a bull. Thanks to a climber, I got her back in one piece.
Please note you will hear mining booms in the morning. Socorro is a mining town and there’s a university for mining there.

Great spot. Lots of pullouts and a good road. Hiked the box canyon and the trail to the valley floor. Very cool. Mostly climbers camped here but not crowded

Awesome. Easy to get into in our transit van. Beautiful views. Clean pit toilet. Nice hiking. Only 2 other cars. Popular climbing area. Other spots in the area. Easy to turn around.

Beautiful place with fantastic views. The road up is super easy, just a little washboarded. No 4x4 or high clearance needed, but wouldn't recommend anything bigger than class C because the road is narrow and space to park is limited The road further up to the mines is closed. Two or three established sites with firerings, no cell service with t-mobile.

Almost made it in our 26 ft class C. Beautiful area. Made it to 33.9866167, -106.9913646, but decided to turn around and go back down. Roads were tight and packed with pickup trucks. Road coming up to this spot was doable but difficult in an RV.
