Aduana for Vehicle Permit | Customs and Immigration

We did leave Costa Rica without our car without going to aduana (customs) and came back before the TIP expired. Storage in almacen fiscal (was not necessary) either.

Only thing is that whe entering CR via SJO we were not able to show a ticket to leave the country. After long explanations the border agent let us in.

So either you do buy an alibi ticket to be able to show that you fly out of the country. (Many airlines let you cancel a booking within 24-48hours with full reimbursement.) Or you show them your TIP which we did not have with us.

Good news is that we figured out that border agents do not get any information from aduana (customs). This info might serve you in case you need to do something murky like leaving the country with an abandoned TIP.

Aduana office to suspend and reinstate your vehicle permit for storage.

Suspend Permit - Provide paper stating your vehicle is in storage along with vehicle import permit.

Reinstate Permit - Provide suspended permit paper and make sure the "Movimiento #" is printed on your new vehicle permit. Storage will not release vehicle without this number on the permit.

*Reinstated vehicle permit will be for the lesser of the remaining time of your original permit or for the length of vehicle insurance you purchased.

*Updated location and GPS coordinates are correct but did not adjust on map. If this appears near Mal Pais it is incorrect. Correct location is near San Jose airport.
