Description

We camped for a night at the trailhead to the Yumbilla Waterfall. It is just a small gravel parking area at the dead end of a road. Space for about 3 rigs. Tourist office told us the area is safe, and we didn't see many people. At night we looked up into the trees, which were filled with hundreds of fireflies, and we could hear a monkey in the trees. We got the key for the hike and returned it the next morning. No facilities. Free.

We also spent the night here. There are no facilities other than a filthy squatting toilet. But it is nice and quiet in the forest and you can start your hike early in the morning.
If you arrive in the afternoon I'd recommend also visiting the lower falls on arrival day. They are pretty as well.

The parking is really small and not level. We preferred to park 100m before at the edge of the track. It is very quiet and perfect to start the walk early.

Super amazing!! Don't miss it! We park and sleep here one night, and in the morning did the hike.. wonderful! About 3 hours in total, we were with our dog :) the little house on the right side has water. On the right side you can arrive to another waterfall, 1h hike in total. Price 10 soles, which are for the community and looks like they need it. Enjoy:)

Great place, super quiet, did a hike to waterfalls in the morning (no people until 9 an) - 3 hours both ways for us!
Perfect stop on the La Balsa - Tarapoto route!

Price still 10 sol per person which you pay in the small town. There is a pin on the iO, ask locals if you can’t find it :)

Get here if you can. I’ll never forget our amazing time here. Note that the short distance up the mountain takes quite some time because of switchbacks. The trailhead is small, but we could turn around with about a 5-point turn (we’re 17-feet long). We had to wait for a couple mototaxis to leave before we could secure a good camping spot. By dark, we had the place entirely to ourselves. It could not have been more sublimely peaceful. We woke up to birdsong like we’ve never heard before. Got to see a toucanet in a tree. Also saw one on the trail. Speaking of trail, people, this is the 5th-tallest waterfall in the world. How incredible is that???

Stayed here the night. Enter the good gravel road toward Cuispes. The road splits, take the the left one. You do NOT need to register, pay or get a key for the hike. Drive past the basketball court and take the next right up the steep hill. At the end of the road take a left along the also very good gravel road about 15min allll the way to the end. Here you can start the 3h hike (easy Tempo there and back). Easy, quiet night at the trailhead. For those who care, 4G/LTE with claro and bites. Pit toilets. AWESOME HIKE

Fantastic peaceful safe location. Careful when there’s heavy rain as there are landslides, luckily I’m in a 4x4.
I arrived late and skipped the ticket office. Walked to the falls the following morning and I was the only person on the trail for the duration.
At 9:30/10 a guide arrived and asked if I had bought a ticket... said I’d get one on my way out.

The most comfortable way to reach this point is by bypassing Cuispes. From PE5N, continue until you reach the junction to turn into Cuispes, and go right and continue until you reach the road end. The road is in good shape.

The access to the road directly from town is steep and rutted and for adventurous drivers only.

We camped beside the little hut, nice and quiet. We hiked the next morning early and left our stuff, no issues. Free. No amenities . (If you register for the hike in town it costs 10 soles per person) This May or may not need to be done, your discretion

We were unable to drive to the trailhead due to a washout. The road was cleared enough for Tuk Tuks. No information on when it will be open to all traffic again.

Super tranquil spot to stay the night before hiking up to the beautiful waterfall(s). Got the key from the office in town and later found out the key didn't work (turns out he accidentally gave us a key for some bathroom so I'd ask to be sure).
