The road up to the border is no problem at all and very easily doable by a 2wd camper van with low clearance with drivers who are used to the carretera austral.

BUT the road on the Argentinian side (from the border to Bajo Caracoles/Ruta 40) is a different story. In the best case it is 100km of extremely bad and annoying washboards, in the worst case you will have serious problems with a low clearance because of washed out parts and water holes (see me Warning post there).

I agree: Do not miss Parque Patagonia, but maybe go north or south in Argentina instead of east.

nothing complicated this is a normal dirt road. very beautiful. but also the road to the crossing at chile chico is stunning as you drive along the edge of lago general carrera, so either way you will be a happy traveller!

This is an amazing drive. A highlight of 3.5 months touring Sth America. Even if not crossing into Argentina a great detour. And Parque Patagonia is a must visit.

We agree, road is fine for even a heavy 2wd motor home and one of the most stunning parts of Patagonia, which is saying something. Don't miss it.

Dude! Best decision ever to take this road. I made a Day of it and holy shit was i in for a treat.

Boring stuff: cochrane to caracoles 5hr. Dirt road. Doable easy for 4x4. Would also do it with 2x. Max weight 18 'tons. Max width probably 3m. Took 35L of nafta. Easy resub@ cochrane or gregores (caracoles is fuckin expensive). Drove after 3days of heavy Rain, no problemo.

COOL stuff: Dear God best Day ever. Made a Day of this pass and Did 4 hikes. Free horses, guanaco's, sheep. So many birds i couldnt keep track: flamingo, condor, Eagle, emoe. And the best thing: breath taking views! Like everywhere. One of those must see places and for me 7 hours(4hikes remember) of natural extasy.
I added 2 'tourist attractions' 5-10 of easy Hill climbing for panorama's u will never forget.

So now you have a choise. Pussy around and take 6 hours of Boring road. Or make a Day of it and be the happiest traveler ever.

confirmed ! this road is quite good, mainly gravel, no mud even after rains. 4 wheel drive and high clearance not necessary.
butonly local road to access wild camps could be problematic if raining (muddy)

If you mean the road to the boarder, than i don't understand this wouldn't be a 2wd road?? Yes, some parts of this road have annoying washboard, but it's better than most (gravel)parts of the Carretera Austral! And besides that, this is one of the most beautifull scenery/boardercrossing, so DON'T MISS THIS ROAD!
