Description

Great camping spot overlooking Sierra de Alvarez, on the site of an abandoned hacienda. Several abandoned haciendas dot that stretch of dirt road in the Sierra and are fascinating to explore. The whole place is quasi pristine, no trash, let's keep it that way. One of the best camping site so far in Mexico.

This was such a beautiful spot. Bumby paved road to get there and we had to trim a tree on the road to allow us to get far enough over to let a car pass. We took a great 9 mile walk using trail info from Mapsme then we also ran the road through the villages. Friendly locals, we felt welcome. Two different people asked if we wanted to buy land there! There are a couple of tiendas but we didn't go in. Lovely rural village.

Great spot! Stars are great and I feel safe in solitude (with my dogs). The gravel side street off the main road to get here is now heavily decorated and I wasn't sure my 12' ft tall C Class was going to clear it but it did! The gravel road was bumpy at times but not impassable for my 22' C Class motorhome. This is NOT an "any rig size" location. I got some side scrapes and nabbed some branches on the way in.
The dark red brick abandoned structure is the landmark to look for and it's a grass hill you'll need to drive up but it's dry season so it was easy for my rig, even though I sat at the bottom and second guessed it. Big open area covered in pieces of broken rocks and there's a side grassier area that others have clearly used for tent camping, accessible by foot and motorbike - a vehicle wouldn't fit.

I was hoping to have some service here (Google Fi) but there is none so I'll have to head back down the hill to finish out the work week online. It was great to unplug. for a night.

We stopped just before this location, on a side road to a soccer field. We really love it! Thanks for the word! Still quiet and beautiful views off the main road. Relatively litter free, though someone did leave leftover ribs that our dogs found.

What a great spot! Nice view across the valley to Alverez and beyond. Turn up the hill to the right at the ruins and it takes you to a great big open spot above the road. A little traffic to the small town but otherwise very quiet. The temps got into the low 40s F and we were socked in covered by fog an entire day, but sunny the next. As others said, it's very clean...please keep it this way!

Indeed a wonderful and quiet spot. Big flat area overlooking the little town in the valley. Loots of flowering agaves and different types of succulents. Recommended!

Awesome spot. Reacheable practically by all types of rigs. Paved road. Followed the route you see on ioverlander (no route for maps.me). Surrounded by nature. Felt very safe.

FREE RANGE HORSES!!!

Not many places to hide the tent and moto from view from the road, but the area felt very safe.

No dogs barking nor roosters crowing! Only horses neighing and cows mooing.

One lane dirt road leads off the highway. We found the abandoned rock structure and a large open quarry type space. Also a more shaded space off to the side. No trash and the locals stopped by to make sure we would keep it that way. No fee mentioned. Stayed two nights. Rode a bike to village around the bend to spend a few pesos at the tienda. Got in/out in a 7.5ft wide 11.3ft tall truck camper with just a few branch tickles. Wider, longer or taller will be a challenge. This is genuine boondocking- no services, plenty of sun for the solar panels, take your poop and trash out with you!
