Exiting Ecaudor for Colombia;
1. Park up and take photos of the vehicle
2. Walk to Aduana, hand in your Ecuadorean TIP, show photos of the vehicle and receive exit stamp. We took a photo of the completed document.
3 Walk around the corner to the passport office and get your exit stamps.

Do not buy SOAT here. Heavily overpriced. In Ipiales their is an insurance office where you get your SOAT nearly 100.000 pesos cheaper. The adres is:
Multiseguro, Calle 12 # 6-25. SOAT signing in front of the office on the first floor. The street is just 5 minutes of the mean square with the church. Easy to find parking lots available in the direct neighbourhood. Walk and take all your papers with you.

At the border crossing into Colombia be sure to park on the right hand side before the bridge and the sign thank you for visiting Ecuador. Crossing took me 1 hours and the Aduana filled in my paper work for me. Aduana gave me the SOAT adres. See picture adres and phone number.
All in all an Easy crossing.

Overall we were here one hour, with the TIP for Colombia taking the longest. My advice is to arrive around 9pm or so as they close at 10pm (we didn't know this) so they did everything much faster than normal. They had shut up shop and driven home before we even got back on our moto.

They briefly checked our van. I think it was out of curiosity, because it’s so beautiful.

The whole process was about an hour and a half.

Border crossing from Ecuador to Columbia

First part as usual:
- migracion to exit Ecuador and get your passport stamped
- Aduana Ecuador to hand out your TIP
- migracion to enter Columbia and get your passport stamped (neither copies nor COVID information required)

To get your TIP, drive over the bridge and stop at the DIAN office.
Access following page: https://www.dian.gov.co/
Scroll down and click on “Importación temporal de medios de transporte de turista” and fill in the required information (ask DIAN officers for help if required).
You will need to add following PICTURES (as a PDF file smaller than 5Mo, not as Jpg!):
- passport
- Migracion stamp (obviously the only picture you can’t prepare in advance)
- Vehicle number (chassis not plate number)
- Vehicle registration paper
- Driving license
Then the DIAN person will let you in the office, ask for original documents and send you the TIP per email. As we did not receive it, she printed it out for us.
All in all it took us 2 hours. We purchased the SOAT in Pasto (Plaza de Nariño).

border crossing from ecuador to colombia:

check out of ecuador fast and easy. Ecuadorian aduana's wanted to keep our TIP so we took a picture.

fast stamp at colombian migraciones, tell them we want to stay 90 days. The TIP took 2 hours. I dont know why, just took a lot of time once we filled in all the info in the computer at the aduana's. They gave the TIP through email so we had to find a place to print it.

nothing covid related asked for at this time of writing

slowest border crossing ever. it took Ecuador 45 min to stamp our passport and 4hrs! for the tip. even though all our papers were in order, we had the Health form ready and copies of everything. Our van wasn't searched. Everything was free.

flight number is zero

if you get an error at the end its fine just show them you did it and they will stamp a piece of paper with your name one it

If ecuador immigration stamps visa but does not write the 90days on it. ask them to put it as you will need it for the TIP " carro"

Long(!) file, both for entering and leaving Ecuador. Take care abd check beforehand if you are allowed to drive into Ipiales depending on the last digit of your license plate - system of "Pico y Placa". Weekends no restriction, which leads to long queues (in which we were caught today 🥶)

We crossed from Ecuador to Colombia. The Ecuadorian side was quick and painless. Parking was a bit tricky. On the Colombian side you must pre register and do the check mig online. You will have to show this on your phone or in paper before you will be permitted inside. Next, you must apply for your TIP online. The DIAN office can not process you until your application is in the system. The website is www.dian.gov.co. It is posted at the DIAN window. We were unable to do it on our cellulars. There is a place near the Ecuador side that will complete the application for you provided you have all the documents. They charge $10. This worked well for us. We also bought our SOAT there. Once the application was received into the DIAN system we returned to the DIAN window and signed a request and we’re issued a TIP via email within a few minutes.

After reading the comments I imagined very easy crossing. Unfortunately, at the day there was a lot of people and cars going both ways. Papers are easy as described. We waited 1 hour to exit Ecuador and another hour for entering Colombia. A lot of refugees from Venezuela, together with them a lot of police. Be sure to park your car / vehicle near police.

This border crossing (from ECU->COL) was one of the easiest so far! We were here Sunday 5 p.m. and there were no cues at all. It took us maybe 30 min to enter Colombia.
After the Colombian Migration make sure to get copies at one of the small shops of the following documents:
- passport
- Colombian migracion stamp in passport
- Car papers / matricula
- driver's license

We are driving from Colombia to Ecuador and I was very surprised how easy is to get in Ecuador. No bureaucracy, no copies needed of any document, no need to do my dog's temporary importation, no need to do a car insurance. Amazing!! All is digital!! 30 minutes to do all the process (people and car).

Report Check-In

Entering Colombia: To speed up the process bring a printed photo of the vehicle registration number to the DIAN.

Report Check-In

Super easy, just ask for an especial line for not Venezuelan people in both borders (Colombian and Ecuador).
We arrived in the morning.

Report Check-In

Heres your chance to do something amazing for people in need. Look around as you cross this border. You'll see hundreds of refugees in need of the most basic things. They are hungry and tired and their babies are sleeping on the ground in the cold. There are very few services available to them and many are stuck here waiting. They need food and warm clothes (children's pants, hats, and blankets most of all) plastic to sleep under, and anything soft for the babies to sleep on. It's super easy to help, just walk up to the struggling human being that tugs at your heart the most and offer what you can. Everything is greatly appreciated. You will find they are incredibly greatful for any help at all.
If you can and want to help more, I've put some markers in Ipiales under the Other section for where you can buy hats, socks, fabric, plastic, and foam mats for people to sleep on. The need seems to be the greatest on the Ecuador side. The red cross and unicef are trying to help but they're overwhelmed and do not have these basic things. It feels absolutely wonderful to make a child smile over a warm blanket and an orange. Help if you're able and spread the word!

Also, you can just walk back over the bridge in no man's land without having to check in and out of the borders. I've been going back and forth between the town and the border every day and there are no issues. Pass the word along!! Overlanders can do great things here

It took us 3.5 hours to cross from Ecuador to Colombia (2.5 hours in the line to exit Ecuador). We arrived at noon. Very busy.

Colombia to Ecuador:. On the Ecuadorian side, we went to the window marked DIAN to do the vehicle paperwork. However, it seems they are only working on taxing imported goods at this window right now. We were sent to the expirations office to do this. Very fast and efficient once we figured that out. See photo.

Report Check-In

Took only 15min to get out of Ecuador, including customs.
Ask for the fast lane so you don’t have to wait with all the Venezuelans.

Report Check-In

We just crossed the boarder at Ipiales coming from Ecuador 3 days ago, at 9 am. Took about 1.5 hours, even with two motorbikes. For DIAN Colombia you need copies of passport (first page and page with entry stamp), driving licence and registration document of the vehicule plus originals. You get the TIP and a handshake from the officer. We bought the SOAT at the Exito supermarket in Ipiales (desk inside at the right side, easy and reliable, costs 93‘500 Pesos for two motocycle for 30 days).

Report Check-In

Colombia side:
Go to right lane as you approach the border. Pass by immigration building on the left and park at the parking lot after the building. If that is full you can park on the right side of the road before the parking lot near the rock wall, but do not block both lanes. Large trucks and buses must pass here. Approach the migracion office. There will be three lines. The right one is for Colombians. The center one is for everyone not a Colombian or Venezuelan. Venezuelans use the left line. The officers rotate accepting people into building. Once you enter you go to the left side which is noted by a sign “exiting Colombia”. This time there will be three lines. Each line has at least one dedicated window. Ask the officer which line is appropriate for you. If you show your passport you may be offered to cut in front of the lines.

TIP: We turned the tip in at the Dian office. It is on the left side of the building from the migracion office. We surrendered the TIP at the window and received nothing back. The order of TIP or visa does not seem to matter.

To Ecuador: Drive across the bridge and take a right. Most people crossed the highway and parked on the left side of the road near the dirt/rock slope. Go to Migracion which is now on the right side of the building (inside). Once you enter, turn to the right and get in the line on the right side of the lobby. You hand your passport to the agent. He/she then stamps the passport. Make sure they write 90 days on it. (you cannot get your TIP if the passport doesn't have a 90 written in it)

TIP: Head to Aduana. The office is located on the opposite side of the building, near the street. You will need your license, drivers passport, title and a document which has the license plate on it (registration). You will have to walk to your vehicle so that the person can take a picture of your VIN number. They then prepare documents. MAKE SURE to review your document for accuracy. In our case they messed up the VIN number, passport number, AND the spelling of my name. After the documents are finalized you sign two finished forms. They keep one and you keep one. You get all copies and originals back.

IMPORTANT: If you entered Ecuador in la Balsa they will ask for 3 copies of your passport and 3 copies of the page with the entry stamp. Why? Because la Balsa is not connected to the system and they do everything by hand. Was a bit annoying and time consuming for us since they had to file a request to Quito to enter our entry information into the system.

Things are changing everyday here. It took 6hours to friends of us to cross 1 week ago (Ecuador to Colombia). They arrived at 7am and 3pm. It seems that, dependent of the time of the day, the line to enter or living Colombia or Ecuador are or are not separated.
We chose to arrived at 6pm. It took us 4hours including Soat and chip for the phone We waited 20min in the Ecuadorian side and 2h in Colombia. It took 45min to do the paper to enter the car in Colombia (no wait time). you need to go there with your car as they stamp the frame number. and you need to have copy of passport (1st page and stamp of enter in Colombia - shop available around to do it), driving licence of all conductors and paper of the car).
It seems that Ecuadorian side is NOT open at night. Colombian side is open 24/24.
We chose to sleep in our van in the bus and taxi parking (Ecuadorian side). Police said it was ok. Not a perfect night but no trouble.

We were entering Ecuador. Past Migrations, turning left, there is a small parking lot, but it was full we ended up leaving the car across the street where the "no parking" signs are :) Migrations was easy and fast since looks like Ecuador is also splitting queues for Venezuelans and other foreigners. Exit Migrations and turn right to find Customs. Looks like the right stand for importing your vehicle is number 2. They'll ask for the vehicle registration, driver's license, passport of the owner, and a photo of the vehicle plate *taken with a phone they'll give you right there* so no point in taking your own photo before. No copies needed, they'll take a picture of everything. No payments. They told us that insurance is not mandatory in Ecuador and we didn't see any insurance company around.

Nosotros ingresamos a Ecuador.

Crossing took two hours Ecuador > Colombia. Probably several hours more if you are traveling Colombia>Ecuador. So if time is an issue, consider using the other border crossing if coming into Ecuador. Or maybe you can ask the Colombian customs officials very politely to get to the front of the line? Or just stand in the much shorter "entry" line? There are people selling coffee and snacks to ease your pain...

NAME CHANGE: If you have visited Ecuador previously under another name (married, divorced, etc) you must provide proof of name change (copy of previous passport/marriage certificate/etc.), and know your old passport number, if you answer “yes” you have been in the country before. This is because officially they create one profile for you and they require documentation to change your name.

**UPDATE: Similar difficultly entering Peru, but the worker just fudged it and created a new profile instead of correcting the profile.**

WARNING:

Lots and lots of Venezuelans crossing the border to get away from the devil called Maduro. The news say +- 3000 venezuelans crossing everyday. So be patient.
In a sunday morning/afternoon it took me 2:45 hours exit Ecuador.

There is only one line to imigracion (entering or exiting Ecuador is the same line).

Aduana was fast, no photocopy of documents, no fees.
