Description

Beautiful balneario right on the river. This part of Rio Cangrejal is perfect for swimming. The grounds and facilities are well-kept. Clean but simple flush toilets and cold showers. There are picnic palapas with bbq pits. Lots of space under the trees for campers or smaller RV’s. It’s about a mile before the Pico Bonito visitor center and river lodges, so it’s close to hiking and rafting. There were only a few people there on the weekend and none during the week. The entrance gate is on the right with a small sign that says Balneario Los Lobos, if it’s locked and no one is around, inquire at the house directly across the road. Enrique, the caretaker, lives there and will open it up for you. Enrique and the owner, David, are lovely people and checked on us regularly to see if we needed anything. There are electric outlets at the palapas, but we didn’t use them, so not sure if they would want extra money or not. There is also a water spigot at each palapa. No wifi or tigo available. 100 lempira per person/per night. We checked out all the other camping options in the area, and for us this was definitely the best!!

Latest Check-Ins

Stayed for three nights, pulling in around sunset each time. A bit tricky with the trees making the path narrow, but our High Roof Ford Transit made it just fine.

Loads of trash, but nothing much more out of the ordinary than we’ve experienced in Central America. Decently level parking, which we had a hard time finding in this area.

Cold shower. Toilets are ok. No toilet paper. River is really nice for a swim. “Nino” welcomed us in we arrived and said the water from the tap (can connect hose) is potable. We didn’t need to fill up our tank, so I can’t confirm.

$100/pp/night. Pet friendly. No cell service. Starlink doesn’t work bc too many trees.

Beautiful river and nice camping area, but...

one of the dirtiest campsites we paid for ever. Trash everywhere. Showers basic and super dirty toilet

200L/car - rather expensive for a place that is not maintained and cleaned

200 for 2 persons, nice swimming! Another family came but the place is very tranquilo!

We barely fit in our F250 with a pop up camper. The tree branches are low hanging and it is a bit narrow. Once to the camping area it is open. 200L for 2 adults. There is power, not at site as well as water. The women’s bathroom was a nightmare, so I used the mens. Cold showers available. No cell reception

Great place, really quiet next to the river, perfect place to take a swim. We paid 200 lempiras for 2ppl and also used electricity. Pet friendly.

nice tidy place on the river, lots of shade, BBQ pits. Bit tight getting in with F-350 & camper, 8m long, 3.2 high but plenty of space after the first part of the entrance.

Wonderful place right by the river! We payed 100 lemps per person, regardless of whether we slept in hammocks or in the van.

We arrived on a Sunday, which is supposed to be a busy day with local visitors, but there were barely anyone there and we were alone by 5pm.

There’s a camping table and small grill under a roof by the campsites. Almost no mosquitoes, which were nice as we slept in a hammock.

Would have liked to stay here longer as there’s many places to explore close-by. Just ask the guy who runs the place for tips, he’s really friendly and knows a lot about the area.

lovely little spot. nice clean river to swim, but muddy after heavy rain. we stayed the night before and the night after we got the ferry to/from Roatan &Utila. it's just 15 mins down to the port. There is a low cable over the gate (look carefully as it's hidden in trees) but if you toot your horn, the friendly guy will come out with a stick and hold it up for larger rigs to go under. Very large rigs might struggle down the short track, but we are 3.3m x 2.2m x 6m and had no problem.

You can also walk to a nice waterfall from here which we discovered when a local guide was taking a group up on a Sunday. Follow the river for 100-200m upstream until you see a little cabin on the other side. Cross the river (which is tricky), the trail starts at the cabin. Beautiful jungle hike of about half an hour to a waterfall with small pool. You might be able to walk further up the stream to the giant waterfall which you can see from the pebble beach at the balneario but we didn't find the trail. If you just want to do the hike, day entry is only 30L pp.

This place is awesome! We got here on a Monday morning. When we stopped in front of the gate the lady from accross the road came over immediately to let us in. We had the entire place to ourselves, it's a little paradise. So quiet and relaxing. And clean! All the info provided is correct, only the gate was always closed but never locked when we left. There is a big chance we will be back here after visiting Utila.

We loved this place and where with hereuntilthere for the first post. But we just returned to it on our way back from Limon on the Coast and it is such a great place to relax and unwind.
Enrique is a lovely guy and it was a pleasure to see him again.
I will say that the gates are locked during the week - so if you are arriving monday to friday Enrique gets back from his day job around 3 to 4 pm but there is often someone in the house over the road as mentioned in the first post to gain access - but equally if you need to leave on a specific day at a certain time - Tell Enrique the afternoon before you want to leave just to make sure that you can get out.
This place is a balneario so at the weekends there will be local families there until around 5pm - but we didnt find it intrusive - the upside is that on Saturday and Sunday the gates are unlocked making arriving and leaving easier.
Rig size - we are 10 feet tall and almost as wide and 24 feet long plus bikes on the back and fit in easily. There is a little overhang on a couple of trees at the entrance that need watching IF you are higher than us.
100L per night per person.
