Description

This place was pretty nice, if you're not looking for solitude. It's a popular daytime beach park, decent for surfing. We paid for a permit online ahead of time, which was $27 for non-residents of Hawaii, for undesignated camping. There's a large open grassy area where people put their tents, although we just camped in our car in the parking lot. There wasn't an official around to check that we had paid for a permit, so you could probably get away with not paying. There seemed to be a lot of people sleeping in their cars. There had been a surf competition that day, and a live band was playing in the evening. Lots of people but not TOO rowdy. There are outdoor showers, toilets, port-a-potties, etc. Gorgeous view in the morning. There's a beautiful small natural hotsprings (not really hot, just warm) on the southwest side of the park by the boat launch. No wifi but cell service is fine.

Latest Check-Ins

Isaac Hale Beach Park IS CLOSED for camping until further notice due to the 2018 Lava Eruption.

Report Check-In

The aftermath of the Kilauea eruption has left this place forever changed. Now called "The Black Sand Beach." I think the lava filled the campground. Some parking but not as much as pre flow. See the lava has swallowed some picnic tables!
