Description

Very good place to spend a few days relaxing. Hans, the owner is super friendly and helps a lot with lots of tips.

There are several big grass lots to camp or park with 110volts and 220volts.

6 Dollars per person per night: Hot showers, potable water, electricity, spotty WIFI included in price.

Washing machine is 3 Dollars per load.

They have long term parking in case you want to go home or visit Galapagos (1 Dollar per day).

Excellent BREAD !!!! Basic products for cooking can be purchased in the kiosk, such as beer, milk, homemade bread etc.

Saturday and Sunday the Cafe-Sommerwind is open with breakfast, lunch and cakes.

Only disadvantage: lots of mosquitos and small insects that bite badly !! The race track for cars and motorbikes is 100m away! so could be some training noices very loud!!

Report Check-In

Almost everything has been said, except nobody mentioned the cats: Sissi and Franz.
Hans will help you with everything (immigration, car stuff, etc...)
The price is 7$ now, but it's more than worth it. Most official campgrounds in Ecuador will charch 5$ pp or more, but they don't offer that clean and warm showers, good laundry machines, a kitchen and all the help provided by Hans.
Also the bread.... Is soooo good. (All Germans know what I was missing).

Report Check-In

Really wonderful Overlander place! It’s in a serene and beautiful setting, where you can camp in a garden near the lake. Wonderful mix of travelers coming through here, if you’re also traveling on the Pan American Highway this should be a destination! The restaurant is also excellent, try the curry wurst! And the Bienenstich! Hot showers, good WiFi and a campers kitchen are also a plus.

Hans really goes out of his way to make this a nice place for travelers, and was also incredibly helpful regarding the border issues Ecuador was having Jan-Feb 24. I’ll definitely try to visit here again

Report Check-In

Actually there is nothing more to add but anyhow there is a lot to say about this place and a great person. Hans is always helpful with any kind of problems and he is very engaged to make traveling for the overlanders easy and comfortable. We were here three times and spend a beautiful christmas eve with other overlanders and Hans' family. We left Finca Sommerwind at 03.02. and wish him and his lively wife Ximena all the best!

Report Check-In

Hans is the best host! He helped us with everything. We had an awesome new Year's eve with everyone at the campground:) Schnitzel and Weizenbier are delicious! Highly recommend!

Report Check-In

There is not much to add to the dozens of comments here. This place is still great, the host is great. we spent Christmas compartindo with other lovely overlanders, it was really nice and warming. Great opportunity to interact with other travelers.

Report Check-In

Nice place to stay and to meet different kind of travelers. I liked my stay and would stay again. Hans and his team are kind and helpful.

That said 6 dollars dor camping is a bit high if you consider hotelrooms from 8 dollars and 6 dollar dorms in Ecuador. That is without a wet tent…

There is nice food and beers but pricy, german beers are imported. If you are on a budget I recommend bringing food from town and cook in the kitchen.

The midnight music from the neighbour camping was a bit irritating.

Report Check-In

This place is a must for every overlander who wants to meet other overlanders!!
On weekends it’s very noisy because of the racing track near bye!

Report Check-In

Hans and his wife were absolutely amazing! We planned on staying 2-3 days and stayed 10! Great spot to enjoy some German food (I highly recommend the potato salad and the tortillas de papa) as well as indulge yourself with some German beer! Hans also gave us all sort of recommendations while we are in the area! He is working hard to make the place comfortable to everyone! The bugs are a little bad there but that’s not a reason to skip this place! Slap on some bug spray and you will be fine!

Report Check-In

Excellent camping. We take the opportunity to wash clothes and relax. We were here for 3 nights. The owners are very kind! WE RECOMMEND!

Excelente camping. Aproveitamos para lavar as roupas e relaxar. Estivemos aqui por 3 noites. Os proprietários são muito amáveis!

Were here again for the third time. What makes this place a true overlander hotspot are 2 facts: Hans is very helpful and has developed over the years a tremendous network to help overlanders for any problem. And he offers great german food and beers.

An incredible place to rest, we stayed for two days before heading to the Colombian border. Everything is as described, clean bathrooms, hot water, large parking, water, energy, very good for resting.

Report Check-In

a warm-hearted welcome. The place is really nice and familiar. Hans is very helpful and has a good restaurant. Only when it's full are 2 toilets and showers not enough and on some days the race track is quite noisy. Otherwise highly recommended.👍

Report Check-In

We can not thank Hans and his wife enough for their help and support. He helped us through a difficult time and the stay at his place was lovely. We spend almost 4 weeks there. Recommended.

Report Check-In

We may prefer wild camping most of the time but Sommerwind is one of those organized campgrounds where you go for a night and stay for a week! Why? Because the place works! Full amenities, super clean shower and WC, fast wi-fi and electricity in a fair price (6 usd pp), washing machine and a great german restaurant with a large selection of local and german beers - plus the best wurst we had for a long time. But the place is not addictive only for those things but thanks to Hans’ - the friendly owner - personality and the presence of the overlanders you meet here. It’s a must to stay for a while and ideal spot to park your van gor 1 usd per day. Danke Hans!

Coming from Colombia, price per night (6$pp) seemed a bit high, but the big, clean, and nice bathrooms with hot showers, the 3$ per load washing machine, the friendly staff, and knowledgeable owner, who gives you more recommendations than you can handle, and the scenery itself makes more than up for it.
Be prepared to stay longer than planned and don't miss out of the sunset view from the top of the campground.

Hans predispuesto a resolver cualquier problema.

Report Check-In

We planned to spend 1-2 night, and ended up spending 8 nights at this spot.

Not only you have the necessities (large flat grassy space, fast internet everywhere, hot water, washing machines, electricity) but Hans can help you out with anything you need. We needed some safety equipment, so he took us to a store in town where we could buy what we needed.
Hans can also arrange for a mechanic to come and work on your truck right in the camp.

On top of these there are an incredible amount of German beers to choose from, plus home made cakes and bread.

Food is also delicious.

Don’t go anywhere else in the area.

Report Check-In

We felt very comfortable! It was a quiet and relaxed few days despite the weekend and an event taking place at the circuit. Space very good, food offer very good, hot water, washing machine, internet everything available. The place is very well maintained, that's what we noticed after many disappointments. Most importantly, Hans and his team are very nice and helpful. For info, the space can also be used as a secure parking space for the vehicle. And finally, very importantly, this place exists, it is manned and available 7 days a week, unfortunately, in our experience, this is not the case for some who are registered in ioverlander

Report Check-In

We stayed with Hans at Finca Sommerwind for nine days. It was a nice time. Hans is very helpful and knows a lot about things. We waited for a package and were allowed to give its address. Everything went great. Lots of overlanders stop by and it's good to chat with them. We can only recommend the place.

Vielen Dank an Hans&Mannschafft

A 100% German hospitality experience in Ecuador. It was so nice to be here!

Hans is a very hard working German guy and well-known and appreciated host by everyone. The site has everything an overlander dreams of and a beergarten exactly like you’ll find in Germany. Mark our words - You’ll be deeply impressed by the German specility beer offerings and the food menu.

Many overlanders come here as you can see in the reviews and we’ve met some awesome fellow travellers. Definitely worth the stay if you are in the area.

Great place! Hans is super welcoming, helpful and can give tons of tips for Ecuador. The German food is delicious! Great place to relax.

Report Check-In

Sommerwind is a wonderful atmosphere for any camper/van etc. There’s space for pets, you can ride your bike around the lake, they have a great selection of beer and wine. Hans is super helpful with everything you need.

I will say the wifi was not great. It was okay, but I had issues doing video meetings on the wifi.

Report Check-In

Great place for a relaxing stop and to get repairs done, either on the campground or next to one of the Cabañas. Hans is great in organizing help of any sort, mechanics, carpenters, polyester work, etc.

Just be aware that one guy who comes to help with body repairs / polyester named Wilson Michilena (referred by Hans) is an unreliable rip off. If you want your work finished in a quality and timely manner, find someone else!

Report Check-In

Finca Sommerwind has become an institution of its own kind in the overlanding community, deservedly so. It is a place where long term travellers congregate, come and go, meet old friends, creating an atmosphere like no other. Hans checks on everything and will try to help in any practical matter. A place to visit if you would like to meet interesting others.

Haans is the reason you need to stay here. places are good but what makes it great is a great host who is attentive to your needs. Haans made our stay so warm and welcome. A an Indian, we recognize great hospitality. A little trivia he shared was that I was the first Indian who stayed at his campsite that drive in and the Second overall. bragging rights :) fast internet, hot showers a nice functional campers kitchen and other facilities. The price was so affordable that it made it all even more worth it. bring Mosquito repellant. but you already know that living in the outdoors.

Report Check-In

We stayed here on a Wednesday since 10am we start to hear motorbikes training at the track on front of the Finca. Just maybe 100m away from the place you park. Actually you can see it in the pictures. Before here we overnight next to San Pablo lake (40min south) no mosquitoes there. But here you must need repellent! Other than the really loud noice from the racing track really good place. We usually not stay in campgrounds, since there aren't many in Ecuador anyway we decided to come for wifi and laundry. I'm we believe the price and amenities are ok but the overexcited comments from previous overlanders are just a little bit too much hype ! We don't say isn't good but ... Tip : if you are coming from Colombia: Most of the German beer you can find it at the next town or most of the big supermarket for halft of the price here sometime even less 😜.

Report Check-In

We only can repeat other comments - Hans and his team are the best! Great location with everything you need including a lot of help with big and small problems . You even can rent cabanas and tiny houses with great view over the lake and Vulcanos enjoying all kind of German specialties and beers ! Muchos Gracias de todo!

Good food, good beer, awesome host! Only downside are the bathrooms. When there are a lot of campers you can wait a while. But great place to meet overlanders!

Super place to stay. Only two hours from the border of Colombia.
We had, as many others here, trouble with the TIP and Hans is the man to help!!!
And enjoying good German Beer is a really welcomed variety.

Hans, we love Finca Sommerwind. Thank you for what you have all done for us. It is a great place, nothing is missing (just the weight we had before ;-) ). Your help in everything is great, your knowledge of so many things, your open year and open mind, your patience. Thank you, your family and your staff a lot. ¡Hasta luego!

Report Check-In

We just stayed at this amazing place. Friday night arriving after dark at 7pm and until lunch on Saturday. The owner, Hans, actually saw our camper at the border, because he was there helping another German couple with their TIP, and he said he would keep a couple German beers cold for us if we wanted to come. Well, he has about 50 types imported. He handed me an ice cold Kolsh, true to his word. This is excelente! To answer the question of the other overlander who complained about noise, here is the story. Once a year there is a long distance vehicle race. It’s a very big deal. So, they race for 8 hours on this one day. This happens once a year. From the property you look out over this track, not even really seeing it. Other times the track is used for horses and cycling, etc. I put up some pictures of the property. It was incredibly nice, Hans and his wife were incredible nice, and the food is a mix of cultures and incredible. He sat with us and gave us 45 minutes of his time at breakfast with recommendations on routes and resources for many, many things. Without a hesitation, I say stay here! The roads from the border are the best we have driven in South America, and even in the US, so driving after dark is not an issue from the border.

Report Check-In

Verry nice place to stay. Good warm shower, clean toilets, good wifi, and a nice host Hans which can help u with a lot.

in the weekend noisy because the race track, and had some mosquitos around

Report Check-In

ok sure, this place has all of the amenities, but what people fail to mention is that it's across the street from a literal race track and a motorcross area. we were here on a weekend and there were screaming engines for at least 6 hours a day! so loud you sometimes can't even hear the people talking that are 3 feet away. insane! why is no one talking about this? yeah sure the beer selection is fun and the bread is delicious but it wasn't worth it to us to stay here. probably fine during the week. there is a out of use pond on the property that is for sale next door so the mosquitoes are horrifying at sunrise and sunset. check out Casa De Campo in otovalo for a much more relaxing experience.

Sommerwind is the place to be if you are around Ibarra. We stayed here for 12 days because there where road blocks in Ecuador. We couldn’t wish a better place to stay. Amazing showers and every facility you want. Hans can help you with everything you need. They have a mechanic on site who is called Diego. In our opinion a good mechanic who fixed some things for us. Price is $6 pppn. German food restaurant which is good.

Cualquier problema, preguntar. Si hay solución, ellos lo tienen.

Report Check-In

Finca Sommerwind is a great place to rest and prepare visits of the great surrounding places and it is also close from the colombian border so you can get quite early at the border the next day. There is anything you need there (laundry service, restaurant, grocery...). Also, I have to say that Hans was very helpful, as with other travellers, to keep my RV for some weeks for a great price before another family picked it up. He helped me with notarial job too. For sure the perfect place to stay in northern Ecuador.

Report Check-In

Hans and Finca Sommerwind are as amazing as all of the previous reviews! and... the restaurant is now open full-time! Electric outlets at each campsite... clean bathrooms.... hot showers.... good wifi coverage! There is a 2 hour hike to the mountain above the campground with amazing views of the lake and volcano. Our inverter died on our van and Hans has been very helpful on helping us get a new one shipped in.

OH!! Beware of just how good the cakes are... weight gain inevitable! LPL

Yes. Finca Sommerwind is open and the best place to relax and find friends in Ecuador. We stood there at the beginning of the corona pandemie for 7 weeks. Stored our motorhome for one and a half year on the finca. The owner Hans made a great job. He helped us with all our questions and problems and is able to help you with all thing around you motorhome and your trip. Really all!

Report Check-In

The same lovely place as ever and Hans helpful as ever with all your problems. Also still the same: these small biting insects... Price for camping is 6$ per person per night, washing machine 3$ per load, shuttle to or from the airport in Quito 60$.

Report Check-In

There are Overlanders and "OVERLANDERS" whether before the pandemic or after Hans' camping is one of "those". There are only a few Latin American campsites that are a must. Either because they are strategically located, or because they are by far the best place to land on your route, or both and are even worth a diversion.
Summer Wind is one of those places where you are guaranteed to have a good time and meet other Overlanders with whom to exchange valuable information. Hans is the guardian angel of many travellers who have passed through his house. If you need anything, a mechanic, a visa problem or to leave your camper in custody... Hans will be able to advise and help you. To make matters worse, the place is very pleasant.

Report Check-In

Finca Sommerwind is still the same wonderful camping as it was in the past! And Hans ist still there as a phantastic host. If you need a place to
rest or to plan your futher trip, Finca Sommerwind is the perfect calm place. If you need help with anything, Hans will do his best for you.
We left our camper in his care and he is doing a great job with the aduana.

The "Finka Sommerwind" is still opened and welcomes Overlanders, Campers and guests for the german Restaurant and the cabañas!
The last entry from Flymickey is definitely wrong! Hans lives here since 10 years and is not goin' anywhere!
I am camping here since the Pandemia started and couldnt be more happy! The Finka Sommerwind is, unlike most Compgrounds along the Panamericana, a full european style Campground with nice flat grassy spots, lots of shade, 110V and 220V connections, hot showers and good Wifi everywhere! Hans is an awesome contact to organizing visa and TIP extensions, travel plans, transportation to/from the airport. He organized a hiking guide, haircuts, massage therapy, a doctors visit and a paragliding instructor for me as well!!!
Great place, lots of activities around from biking enduro over hiking and horseback riding...
Who ares about Covid when you have Sommerwind!?!?

Report Check-In

And I should let every Overlander know. That Hans takes care about all the cars, which are parked here for long term. He is in touch with the aduana and they will find together a solution for all the cars here(30 cars right now, where the owners went back to their countries, while the pandemic situation).
There are two options, maybe the cars will get a time in which they can leave the country. Or the Aduana will make an a Customs seal(Zollverschluss), so that the cars can stay here how long they want.

Hans really try to find good solutions for all who had to leave because about corona.

We stayed 3,5 months during the COVID crisis, leaving Hans and Finca Sommerwind was and still is a heartbreak. Hans has a heart of gold, helped our stranded family of six with all you can imagine. He organized our visa and TIP
extensions during the crisis, he baked cake for and with our kids, he organized BBQ and Bonfires, even doctor appointments, helped with mechanic problems and really made us feel at home. Many stranded overlanders left their cars at Hans Finca and flew home with rescue flights and Hans still keeps everyone updated about current situation. The place is absolutely beautiful at the Lagune, surrounded by hills. Ibarra is a pretty town with very good infrastructure. We love love love this place ( and Hans!)

Report Check-In

Thank you, Hans. You helped us in the difficult times of Coronas. Although frontiers are blocked and people partially have not been allowed to go outside, we had a great time on your camping. Thanks!!!

Report Check-In

Perfect location close to the lagoon Yahuarcocha, nice grassy ground, quiet, clean bathrooms and kitchen, a beer garden with German beer and „Currywurst”, “Schnitzel”, “Leberkäs” and homemade cake, bread and jam. These are the mere facts.

What stands out is the passion, kindness and generosity of Hans, the owner. We were 30 campers, stranded in quarantine during the Covid-19 crisis and we could not have done it without Hans.

Hans organised the extension of our TIP and our visa. He kept in touch with the authorities and gave us an update every day during a briefing. As we were not allowed into town Hans even took care of all grocery shopping, quite a mission for 30 campers as you can imagine.

On top of all this Hans organised social gatherings like BBQs, bonfires etc to keep the spirit up.

We all don’t know how long this crisis will last but this place is a must stay during your trip through Ecuador. We will be back for sure. Thank you, Hans. Stay safe out there 👋

We stayed in Finca Sommerwind for one night and had a great time! Hans is a very special guy that seems to find time to care for everyone and help wherever he can. The place is big, grassy spots for every size rig or tents and has a lovely beer garden where he serves delicious german food. This is a meeting point for overlander so in the evening there is always someone to have a beer with. There is an outside kitchen to use, clean facilities, washingmashine and lots of space to hang up the washing! You can even buy fresh german bread! The only thing that could be improved is to offer a second shower and toilet. Highly recommended!!!!

It was a success to have followed the advice of other overlanders to stay in this excellent campsite ($6ppn). His owner Hans, very friendly and always ready to help his visitors. It quickly helped us solve a brake problem. As a former overlanders, he knows perfectly well what we need to spend some relaxed days and with all that is required, electricity 110/220, water, kitchen, bathrooms with hot water, washing machine ($ 3 pl) and dump station. Personally I recommend it!

Report Check-In

Terraced grassy area behind the restaurant. When we arrived, it was already very crowded, only 1,5 m to the neighbors with very little privacy. Definitely not our thing. We apologized for squeezing in and one lady warned us friendly of her dog, because our car was inside the dog’s territorial boundaries. The next morning she moved to an uneven spot for breakfast because her dog went crazy...
Hans was a very helpful host, but there were indeed too many guests around. Amongst other things the lady didn’t know about the ordered bread the next morning, the washing-machine was occupied all the time (and we were told that they have to do their own laundry). We might have caught the wrong day, but based on the extremely good reputations, all that didn’t meet our (high) expectations.

Report Check-In

very good spot to meet Overlander and to exchange ideas. Hans is very helpful and friendly. Cooking facilities and restaurant. 6 $ ppn, laundry with hot water! $ 3 per load. high recommended

Report Check-In

This place has the feel of an 4x4 enthousiasts weekend. Although the (new) campground is still a work in progress and having one combined shower/bathroom for all male visitors can be awkward, meeting fellow (i)overlanders travelling in different directions was the main attraction for us. We made some new friends and received many very useful tips (and hopefully gave some too).

Came in for one night, stayed three (and had 'fiestas' every evening). Price is 6 USD per person per night (electricity, water for your tank and hot showers all included), DIY laundry 3 USD. We'll come back whenever we're in the neighborhood.

Report Check-In

Great site near the lake, we stopped and planned to stay 1 night but ended up spending 5 nights. Hanns is amazing ( here is a guy who really cares and has put together a nice place) and super helpful. His pricing is fair, food is good ( esp the bread) wifi work flawless and most of ok our kids loved it.

Report Check-In

This is a lovely place to stay, fully recommend it, Hans has much improved the site, be careful of some of the wild campsites round the lake we have heard of occasional robberies

Report Check-In

This place has moved few hundred meters - it is located behind the cafe now. The old campground location is a separate private area now with different owners. Access to the new camping location is only through the sliding gate in front of the cafe building, the red gate belongs to the private area.

We enjoyed our time at Finca Sommerwind even though it was unexpectedly long (12 days) because of the protests which were taking place.
We only met Hans, the owner, for a short time since he couldn't come to the Finca because of the protests. But he is eager to help everyone with everything. Sometimes he might be a bit overwhelming...

We camped on a nice, flat, grassy spot. Camping is 6$ pP/night. No difference between tent or camper. There is a kitchen available which is fine but could be better equipped. There is only one shower+toilet for women and one for men. But surpisingly we never had to wait for shower or toilet.

All in all we enjoyed our stay a lot the only downside is that the kitchen and bathrooms could have been cleaned more often.

Report Check-In

Nice place to stay before or after crossing the border. Hot shower, washingashine, cold beer and gean food. Hans, the owner is very kind and helpfull with informations.

Great place to meet Overlanders, do laundry, enjoy a hot shower, hang out, eat great German food (ok we are partial to that) and get all the advise you need from ever so helpful Hans. Did I mention the great bread he bakes?
We arrived on a Saturday and did experience some race track traffic. Hans is also working on improving the camp sites for trucks, RV’s since they currently have no grass and are very dusty in the frequent wind.

Report Check-In

Excellent camp site, great place to meet fellow overlanders. Hans the owner is a top bloke with lots of local contacts anything you need he has the answer and is always happy to help & more importantly sells great German beer & food....

Report Check-In

Location and welcome coffee . Hot shower.

Despite this I don't advise camping, the WiFi cut before 9 pm, the dogs barked all night, really all night! And in the morning there was some loud music and not necessarily to everyone's taste from 7:15 am. Lack of the establishment mainly in relation to the dogs.

Emplacement et café de bienvenue sympa. Douche chaude.

Spent 5 nights here. Love that it's on a motorsport circuit and that you can practically watch a race from your van. Seemed expensive to us but maybe we're used to Colombia. $4 for bread is steep wherever you're from as is the 5% charge for card payments. Lovely place but European prices.

Report Check-In

Best place in South America, we really enjoyed it for three weeks. You will find everything you need here, especially the best host. The restaurant offers good food and German beer. Good opportunity to park the car for a longer time.

Report Check-In

Had three nights here: one full day for mechanical works on our car (Hans is a huge help in getting the right people for the right things in Ibarra). And one day of relaxing and connecting with home: the WiFi is really good. 6 USD pppn. 3 USD for a load of laundry - clotheslines are also available to use. Great place also as base for hikes. Oh, and: ASK HANS FOR TRAVEL TIPS when you go south from here, better than any travel guide!

We enjoyed Finca Sommerwind. The food was very good. Hans gave us tipps what to visit in Ecuador. If you need a mechanic or anything else, he can help you.

Very friendly and helpful German owner Hans has a nice grassy area to camp on, space for all size of rigs. Hot water shower and toilet (flush, no TP) for $6 pppn
Possibility to do laundry for $3 per load
Excellent bread ($4) available as well as German beer and in the restaurant diffrent German specialities.

As described. Hans and his crew are very friendly. Be aware that on Saturday and Sunday there is a lot of noise from the motorcycle and car racetrack that is located directly across the street. If you visit on the weekend be sure to walk (3km) to the village for fish dinner or lunch.

If you have an unsociable dog, you might want to keep it in your vehicle or find somewhere else to stay. Hans has 5 dogs. They are friendly but sometimes visitors dogs bark and cause more trouble than the ones who live here. Please consider the other campers if you bring your dog here. Keep it under control.

Highly recommended! Very nice place - clean and hot showers, fast WIFI, washing mashine. Hans the owner has a solution for EVERYTHING - regardless if you have a technical issue or if you want to buy something you need. There is also a small restaurant for breakfast or some yummy German food. Perfect place to meet other overlanders and to relax a couple of days. Big rig friendly and dog friendy. 6 $ per person per day. We wanted to stay 2 nights and ended up enjoying the place for 11 days.

Report Check-In

Mauvaise expérience !
Emplacements presque plats.

Report Check-In

Like everyone else, we stayed longer than planned in this spectacular campground. Everything you need is available and if not, the ever-resourceful Hans will figure it out for you. A must stop.

Report Check-In

To be honest, this campsite wasn’t really to our taste- surprising, given the number of positive reviews. The restaurant looked like it would be nice, pretty environment but just too many people in massive campervans for us- would be good if you want to be very social but we like a bit of space and peace and quiet so it wasn’t for us. We didn’t stay the night.

Report Check-In

Hans has already many good reviews but we add ours because this place is nice, hot shower, washmachine, kitchen. We needed parts for our car and Hans bring us to his mechanics with who we made lots of shops to finally find what we needed. Very helpfull ! Bring your repellent because of the mosquitoes ...however we stayed 3 nights instead of 1.

Spent five very relaxing days here - everything is as described with reliable decent wifi, hot showers, laundry and a very welcoming and helpful host Hans!! Great meeting point for overlanders and the race course across the street was only used as jogging/walking-course in the morning ;)

Report Check-In

Highly recommended! Hot showers, reliable/fast wifi, cool/quiet nights, beautifully manicured grounds. We thoroughly enjoyed the week we spent here (no race track activity, dogs were quiet at night). Excellent hosts, Hans and Patricia encourage a friendly, relaxed environment. Self-serve laundry onsite, as well as restaurant (open weekends, dinner service finished by about 9 pm). Taxi to city center is $4, or 30 cents each way by bus. We would happily stay here again if we come through Ibarra.

We were here for 14 days and the farewell was difficult. Everything is still as described. Hans is incredibly active and takes good care of the Overlander. We also did a 3-day trip to the sea with him and had a lot of fun doing it. It is also nice to be spoiled with German and international cuisine. This course is a must when touring North or South - A meeting place for Overlanders.

Report Check-In

Big lovely grounds, nice clean kitchen and semi-outdoors common area. Electricity and water throughout. There is a DUMP area where you can empty your tanks onto the septic tank! Internet is good. We stayed three nights, and showers were warmish, and window in shower is very ill-placed. Nice place to do laundry, thet $3/load to use the machine, and big clothesline area. The location is nice; there are walking and bicycle lanes around most of the lake. We really didn't notice noise from the racetrack, maybe a little during the day. It's a little more expensive compared to other places in Ecuador, but I'm guessing it would seem like a treat if you have just come from Colombia and have not stayed in an RV park for a while.

Report Check-In

Stayed here for two weeks. Very calm place with grassy ground. Hans, the german owner, is very helpful. If you need any assistance for your car (engine, transmission box, brakes, paintings,....) or yourself (doctor, dentist,...), he knows for nearly every problem a specialist in the town. On weekend he has fresh cake+coffee and a restaurant. The four dogs are just barking when foreigners enter the campground, so it is more secure. The race course is rarely used, in the whole time we are here for 2 hours for two cars. So don't care about it. Prices and equipment as described below. In total a highly recommended site, one of the best in Ecuador.

Report Check-In

Great place to spend a few days enjoying Hans hospitality. The place is by the lake so there is a great place to jog or to circle around the lake. Nice overlander meeting point. Try the breakfast, the bread and jams prepared by Hans. Probably one of the nicest campgrounds we been to along the Panamerican.

Report Check-In

We can only repeat what has been written many times. Very nice camping next to the lake with a large lawn for camping. Warm and very helpful owner Hans who welcomes you with coffee and homemade German bread. One night costs 6 USD pp. Tasty cakes and weekend meals when the cafe is open. Hot shower, washing machine, good WiFi on the whole camping area complete the whole perfect! There are dogs here that also bark, which we did not find disturbing. Rather, we felt safe, because no one can access the terrain that does not belong there. The nearby racetrack is only on weekends in operation, only during the day for 2-3 hours. Also with Patricia and her daughter, who are also living on the finca Sommerwind, we met great, very kind and helpful people. Thank you three, we had a great time with you!

Report Check-In

My wife and I stayed at Finca Sommerwind on numerus occasions over a period of several months. Our experience was nothing but positive in all respects. Please note that from the beginning of May 2018 Hans has full responsibility for running the campground and cafe. Also note that for the whole of June 2018 Hans will be in Germany so don't expect to see him during this period.

We used both the cabins available and tent camped. The cabins are comfortable and offer everything you could need. Tent camping is great in the beautiful surroundings of the finca and provides drinking water, a kitchen, fridge, power (110V and 220V), WiFi, clean toilets and endless HOT showers. We really don't understand the comment from a previous person that the showers were cold as we were there at the same time as them and did not experience cold showers!

Hans is a mine of information and goes out of his way to help overlanders when he can. Need a visa or extension, recommendations on places to visit, a place to fix your vehicle or a host of other requests then Hans will do everything to help. He spent many hours helping me acquire a visa in November 2017.

There are many overlanders to meet and share travel stories with. The communal area lends itself well to this and is also a great place for a BBQ which Hans often arranges.

The cafe, open at weekends only, offers a variety of food and we can highly recommend the German bread (available any day on request), cheesecakes and apple cake, all home made. On arrival, Hans met us with free coffee and some of his delicious German bread.

The Finca is a safe and secure place to secure your vehicle. We did this twice with our motorcycle. Once for nine days whilst we visited the Galapagos and once for two months whilst we returned to the UK. Patricia, who lives on site, was also kind enough to store our motorcycle riding gear in her house whilst we were away.

Be aware that there are five dogs on site but they are very friendly and used to lots of visitors. They do bark at pretty much anything that moves outside the confines of the Finca but are usually quiet at night.

Yes there are mosquitos but that's hardly Hans' fault. Just bring repellent, cover up or light a fire using the wood provided free of charge by Hans.

Others have commented about the race track and this cannot be ignored. However, in our experience it is unused for 90% of the time.

This is most probably the best campground we've visited since our time in the US and Canada. Highly recommended.

Report Check-In

Certainly the best Campsite we have experienced in our travels. Super friendly hosts displaying true hospitality.
Hans is also going out of his way to assist with any 'overlander problems' you can think of.
Very highly recommended!

Report Check-In

It was ok but certainly did not meet expectations from previous review... redefined "European standards" for this American. Toilet paper bin in bathrooms were overflowing. Kitchen area was filthy. Mosquitoes bad. Cold shower. Nice to do laundry (only washer), Hans was very welcoming with delicious bread, great talking to many other overlanders there. Nothing really within walking distance. Enjoy!

Report Check-In

Hans and his family are such lovely people. This is the best place to stay before/after the border. The finca is beautiful with horses, a garden, fruit trees, washing and cooking facilities - everything is so well taken care of, you can see the love in the details. Hans really went above and beyond to help me - from answering emailed questions about visas and the border, to accompanying me to various mechanics and shops around Ibarra to help me get everything I needed taken care of with trusted people he recommended. While I stayed with Hans I met other Overlanders who were all very nice/friendly/helpful people. It was a pleasure to soak up their knowledge and sit around the camp fire hearing stories of people’s journeys. I wish I could rate Sommerwind higher than 5 stars, it is a true gem and it’s Hans and his positive, easy-going, helpful attitude that made me stay for over a week. So thankful I stopped and made this place home for a short time, I will definitely be coming back.

Great place. Super helpful and friendly owners. Beautiful grounds, facilities, and setting. Plenty to do in the area. Tons of other overlanders. Dogs no problem, just your standard friendly camp dogs and the racetrack was only active during the day on weekends. It was pretty fun to watch the motorcycles racing around the track while eating lunch.

Report Check-In

We have only good things to say about this place - super hot showers (the ones next to cafe), three wifi networks which were all fast, beautiful setting amongst grass, gardens and trees, nice outdoor kitchen and dining area (incl gas cooker, fridge, agua potable, a BBQ, hammock and book swap), Patricia is lovely, and the dogs were totally fine. Being able to tick up beers is dangerous. Basically, they have thought of everything and you won’t want to leave... Stock up on food before you come - the closest little town is 3km away and barely has fruit or vege. Or you can just live on cakes from the cafe. A taxi to Ibarra is about $5 one way. Oh and maybe it’s the time of year or where we parked (close to the house), but the bugs weren’t bad...

Hello this is Hans and Patricia, owners of Finca Sommerwind. Logging in to make couple of corrections on the description of our place.

Report Check-In

Report Check-In

Great place to unwind. Wifi reaches most areas unless you camp at the back of the lot. Hot showers were great. Open kitchen for use and big beers ($1.70) using tick-mark honor system. Worth visiting on a Sunday for the food and baked goods. The loaf bread, while expensive, was awesome. Town on far side of lake specializes in fried fish plates and cheese or sweet plantain filled empanadas topped with sugar. Tasty and cheap but get them fresh!

Report Check-In

super nice place. As said, they offer hot showers, drinking water, kitchen, laundry and most important: cold beers. Met a lot of other overlanders here. would go again

Report Check-In

It's so nice that we ended up staying 6 nights. Hot shower, clean toilets, kitchen, wifi, potable water and eletricity. On weekends they have a delicious home made bread. Very recommended!

Report Check-In

We are a retired British couple who stayed here for 3 nights in February 2017. We were left with the distinct impression of a Germanic clique to which we were only peripheral guests. In addition we were appalled at the treatment of an Israeli family who were there at the same time who were treated by one of the proprietors
in a fashion which was either ill mannered or, more likely racist. I should add that Hans the main proprietor was not involved in the bad behaviour.

Report Check-In

We are an Israeli family with two small children traveling through South America. We recently stayed at Finca Sommerwind for three nights.
Towards the end of our stay there was an incident involving the proprietor’s wife which at best was bad manners and at worst was blatant racism. Our children were present and were visibly upset.
The next day we asked for an explanation from the proprietor which he was unable to supply.

Report Check-In

This place is great! a definite must stop. It's popular so expect to run into a lot of other overlanders. If you have a dog, i would ask Hans to be around when you do the introduction to his pack. We didn't do this at first and has a little bit of a bristle. But with hans there it was a simple affair and his dogs accepted our two dogs. But you definitely want to be a dog lover as the dogs roam around 24/7 but are nice. Great place to stay before or after the border

Report Check-In

Like all of the other comments, this place is a real treat. Friendly owners, tons of space, good facilities (with consistently hot water!), good wifi, lots of other overlanders, and fresh homemade bread ($4) and marmelade ($2.50)!! $5pp. No height restrictions.

It's an overlander oasis for sure - come and make some new friends!

Great German run place! Hot showers, clean bathrooms, Hans' delicious fresh cake and bread, friendly travelers.

Beautiful finca with grassy camping (powered) and cabins. Fully equipped kitchen, clean bathrooms, hot showers, great view, quiet at night. What more could you want. $5pp/night.

Report Check-In

We loved it here. Com prepared for no-see-um tiny biting bugs!

Report Check-In

We stayed here 13 days over Christmas and New Years Eve and met great people from all over the world. The owner Patrica and Hans are very friendly and helped us lot. We needed a mechanic, so Hans called Diego the "campground mechanic" and Patricia accompanied us for a doctors appointment. They offer fresh german bread -lecker- and self made jam. Great place to stay.

Report Check-In

This place is great, the owners fantastic

Report Check-In

Had a great time at the finca with the gorgeous hosts Patricia and Hans. The cafe is open on sundays with delicious food and cakes. Hot, clean showers, average wifi, electricity on sites. $5/p. Definitely the the nicest place on our journey!

Report Check-In

Excelent place to relax of the road. Charge energy for cross to Colombia.

Report Check-In

Internet isn't always "quiet bad". it depends of how many people are online,we did'nt have problems to upload our blog with a lot of photos!

Report Check-In

Very nice place and great meeting place for overlanders. Ok bathrooms, nice outside common area with BBQ and fireplace.

Report Check-In

Very nice place with a great view on the lake.
All the comfort you can need, like hot water, laundry and good Internet.
Hans and Patricia are so nice and helpfull, they can give you informations about everything, help you plan your trip, adresses in other cities... And they know the best mechanics in town, to fix everything.
they also have a bistrot activity every sunday, you have to try the cheesecake!
5 $ pp/ night

Report Check-In

GREAT place! Hanz, the owner, is very helpful and will do everything to make you spend a beautiful time. It has a lot of space for big rigs and very easy entrance. Kitchen, bathrooms with hot water and good Internet. USD 5 pp per night

Report Check-In

Very friendly and comfortable but the internet access is quite bad.

Report Check-In

What the others overlanders wrote is right. A beautiful place with wonderful people!

Report Check-In

It's really worth a stop! Nice place to rest and hang out.

Report Check-In

Great hideaway spot on the lake. Found it by accident. very clean cozy, good facilities, hot water showers, cold beer.

Report Check-In

Great spot. Very helpful hosts. We had a great time there. There you find all you need: 110/220V, Wifi, potable water, hot showers, you can do you laundry, rv storage, big rig friendly.

Report Check-In

Famous, known by many others. We had only one night here. Definitely wanted to stay longer and enjoy the place and hospitality. Indeed we used our own stuff in the kitchen.

Report Check-In

Excellent place to relax and enjoy Hans and Patrcia hospitality... And eventually car races at the nearby "Autodromo" ... Pass to stay one night with mine "Mimosa Kombi" and already three nights... Maybe more !!!

Report Check-In

Definitely one of the best camping sites on our trip! Hans and Patricia are lovely and very helpful hosts. We planned to stay 2 nights and ended up staying 4. Had a great and relaxing time there and would have loved to stay longer. Good place to meet other overlanders. Delicious homemade bread and cakes. Ecuador's paradise!!

Report Check-In

Still $5pp/n. The kitchen was a bit dirty and wasn't well stocked, ended up pulling out all our own things from our vehicle. No indoor common area and it was quite rainy and cold when we were there. Fantastic owners!

Report Check-In

Agree with comments... Good friendly place. We stayed two nights then left our motor home here (1usd per night) took a bus ($3 pp) to Quito (it's a clean service). Then spent 10 days in Galápagos Islands and couple in Quito old city. Took bus back as it was too convenient. Highly recommended vs dragging big motor home. There is a great 11.5 k track all around the lake - we walked around twice and took us about 1.5 hr brisk walking. Good change after sitting all day in vehicle. There are small fish restaurants which you can try. We didn't as both walks were in early morning. Laundry service $3 per load. Only big watch out is biting flies... They are nasty so cover up every inch, put Deet especially if you have soft skin - it will itch like hell, swell red for days and will turn blisters if infected.. Enough said :)

Report Check-In

Great place for relaxing. They have all amenities you need and there is plenty of space. The owners are very friendly and helpful. They sell good self made bread.

Report Check-In

We had to share the place with two seabridge tours which made it a little crowded. but we got cake every day :) try strawberry! really good place to relax!

Report Check-In

Excellent! A little loud on Sundays due to the motorcycle racings across the street. Best is to go at the end of the afternoon on Sunday to avoid the noise but get the desserts from their cafe. Helpful and hospitable hosts. They gave us advice on where to go in Ecuador.

Report Check-In

Really great campground and what a huge difference to those who are run by "locals". It seems that Germans know what matters when you do camping! They also have cabanas if you don't feel like pitching a tent. The biting bugs were naughty and it still itches many days after.

Report Check-In

Stayed for 2nd time here, was much better than the first time that was a little noisy. This time there was no trucks, was very quiet and really nice.
Left our truck here while we were visiting family in Chile and Hans and Patricia looked after it even when we took longer than planned to come back.
Stayed for the third time and really enjoyed this place.

Report Check-In

Very nice stay. We enjoyed three nights. Clean bathroom. Hot shower. Great WiFi. The dogs are well behaved. Hans and Patricia are very friendly. Highly recommended. $5 per person per night.

Report Check-In

As below, very enjoyable stay. We came back after our first visit to do a tour to the north west of Ecuador to visit indigenous communities and also descendants from African slaves. Very interesting, Hans can tell you more. We also had an on site visit from his mechanic and had front brake pads changed. Thanks Hans and Patricia.

Report Check-In

I stayed there for one week and enjoyed everything! The 5 dogs are more than friendly and start barking just in the morning when joggers are out sidewalking along. The food there, the fresh baked bread and the cakes are a dream. Camping is 5$ a night and worth every cent. Patrizia and Hans are much more than just the owners, they involve everybody who wants into their daily life and give support where ever needed, even with purchases from the city. The area is wide and during my stay we installed a camp fire place where we were sitting every evening with fire wood , which Hans has provided for free. I like to give a big thank you to Patrizia and Hans for that marvelous time!

Report Check-In

Very nice place. If you have no problem with 4 medium sized dogs running, playing and barking around day and night when they are awake, go there.

Report Check-In

We had a very unlucky week at the camping. Our 7 years old daughter was bitten in the face by one of the dogs. We strongly recommend parents to prevent their kids from playing with them. Also the horses got free and pulled the electricity cable which broke the plug from the camper. On the other hand, there was a very nice atmosphere amongst travelers.

Report Check-In

I needed a nice Place for a little relax time and in the end i stayed 15 days in this wonderfull place. Hans and Patricia running a great camping here. If you can time your visit here, come on a weekend, on Sunday the Cafe is open and they offer really excellent Cakes, and some Dishes. All in really good and fresh quality ( I know about this - i am a Chef). You will find here a familiy atmosphere, everything is clean, the Internet is so far good, speed is changing. You can use a kitchen, the water in the shower is hot and if you need help with something, Hans and Patricia are helping. They also can take you to the city, they driving regulary to the center.
I like to add a small coment about the statement from canalblog.com. I was nearby when the things happend with the dog-bite, and they wrote only the half about this story. Hans and Patricia where very unhappy about this. They helped quickly, drove the girl 2 times to the doctor to check. The dogs played together, and she comes between. it was not a hard, agressive bite, more a small scratch. Of course it was unluckly in the face, but not a big thing. The girl was mostly playing allone, without supervision by the parents. Hans told them also to be carefully when the dogs are playing. Same with the broken cable. Also here, it was really unlucky. When some bad things happen in a short time, its never fun, but the owners where very helpful. Its good and helpful to write critics, suggestions or complaints, but they should write the full story.

Report Check-In

Nice place, big green area, clean bathrooms, potable water.
A little noisy if you park close to the road.
Payed USD$5 per person.

Report Check-In

Wonderful place to recharge our batteries after several days of driving and crossing the border from Colombia. Hans gave us some good recommendations for Galapagos and Amazon tours. You can leave your rig here if flying from Quito

Report Check-In

We only stayed one night but we really loved this place. The lake view is stunning and the campground is very nice with all facilities you need. We could easily stay here one week. Try the cake from the cafe - it's really good!

Report Check-In

Awesome place to stay at least a week! Everyting We need as there as all friends already informed. The only news is about a kitchen that Hans mande for Overlander traveling with bifes and also backpackers. We also paid USD 5,00 pp per night. What a nice and relaxed place to stay. All clean and the dogs are cute. Our dog, was after a short period, integrated and accepted.
The Coffee Shop is hard to beat, great food and cakes. So if you are looking for a familiar atmosphere, with tons of reasonable offers you are on the right spot.
To name a few: transport to and back from town, knowledge where to go and what to visit, solving problems - what kind ever - and much more...

Report Check-In

Report Check-In

Sadly, if facilities are good, I have to say 5 owner's dogs in a small place is to much... Wake up every morning by noisy dogs between 5:30 and 7:00 am, a bit to early for us. The last but not least thing is coming when our 6 years old girl was bite on her face by one of these dog ! And no excuse from the owner, he only said : "it's not to bad" ! Was a good place clean our RV but that's all. Even Patricia who said the children can horse riding for free said during tree days : "not now" ! Better to propose nothing in this case !!!

Great location with WiFi, clean and hot showers and toilets and very friendly owners. We stayed there for two nights and paid 5 USD/per person and night. Washing machine (16 kg) was 3 USD per load. They make their own bread which can be purchased after pre-order. (During our stay there have been "biting" insects in the grass - so we took a few "souvenirs" with us.)
