Description

Pack of 5 went up and down the beach over period of 4 hours. We didn't see them hunt but heard from folks who saw day before orcas toss sea lion right on the beach at high tide. So worth timing the trip to high tide n see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat

After 3 days of waiting, we saw a group of 5 orcas hunting!! Really really worth the waiting. They were already spotted that morning far away, but they returned 30 min before high tide. They went in the direction of Caleta Valdes, and after about an hour they came back.

The weather conditions were perfect for the past 2 days, not much wind and clear water, but they didn't come. So mostly it's a matter of luck I think.

Also watching the sea lions and sea elephants is really fun. This time of the year, the pups learn how to swim and play around. You can see them relatively close from the boardwalk.

The road from Puerto Piramides is unpaved but not bad at all. Only the last 10 km or so are a bit worse.

Good luck!

The road RP47 between Punta Norte and Punta Cantor is closed. Nobody said that and we only saw it when we were in Punta Norte.

Muitos elefantes marinhos. Bem protegido do vento.
Infelizmente não haviam orcas visíveis.
Lugar bem bonito.
No caminho vi muitas lebres, ratos, ovelhas, guanacos, avestruz, pinguins e outros mais.

we decided to come here on our way from Ushuaia to Bariloche because we heard about the beaching orcas in March already. so a 7-800km detour but felt cheated. the drive here is hundreds of kms of boring nothing. the parc looks the same and the set-up is horrible. the road in the parc is really bad, which you have to drive up and down because you can't sleep anywhere. we went to caleta valdez only at 6pm because the ripio was way worse than what we thought. the ranger was nice enough to let up sleep there in our van. when we went to Punta norte we were chased out at 6.30 (way before high tide). the ranger was very unfriendly, threatened a fine and questioned why we were there since there weren't any orcas anyways (last sighting indeed more than a week before). as we drove out, we were followed by a guard for 30 very slow kilometers to make sure we wouldn't park anywhere. it took us 2,5 hrs to make it to the town, trying to shield our van from the rattle road. we didn't even go for high tide the next morning cause we were sick of it. it's privately owned and you feel like they won't use the money to improve the roads or facilities. so don't come here before mid March when the orcas come here to teach their young ones how to hunt on the beach. we probably would think differently if we saw orcas but a really really long way for nothing and frustration

We went two days in a row and saw no orcas. And Yes it is a lot of gravel driving. But I would still recommend going because the place is quite relaxing and as long that there is the slightest chance to see ONE.

We agree, if you don‘t see the Orcas it‘s a long and dusty road, HOWEVER you never know. We haven‘t seen any, but 3 days before 10 were at the beach. So I‘d try my luck again.

Amazing place to see Orcas hunting! We went to Punta Norte 5 times with high tide. Out of 5 high tides the Orcas came twice. Highly recommended, so amazing to see these animals!

Spent the day here and it was lovely. Loads of sea lions and pups all learning to swim, but really only just mastering the entry! No orcas seen for about 21 days and having spoken with the ranger you have a better chance from mid-March.

There are no elephant seals here (or sea elephants!)

Report Check-In

My advice.. if it's out of season and there are no reports of Orcas of late... it's a long dusty gravel road to sea Elephant seals when other Colonies are more accessible elsewhere. That said.. if it was in season I would have walked that long dusty road to see Orcas let alone drive.!

I have to disagree. It’s worth a visit! Very nice ranger answered everyones questions. He told us that orcas arrived here 4-5 times in November and December. The chance to see them is best in March/April, when the sea lion babies are grown up so more animals in the sea. But in January you can see the sea lions giving birth. So lots of extremely young puppies.

As mentioned below, a long way to go for not so much...

This is about 80km from P Pyramides on good dirt road. Good view of 3 or 4 groups of elephant seals. Most people stayed for about 10 minutes. A long way to go for 10 minutes!
