Latest Check-Ins

The price to stay overnight is $5 (180C). That is what they charge me. Better have the correct change, or you will have to dole out 200C.
2. Google Maps will get you here.
3. You definitely need high clearance and 4x4, especially during the rainy season. The road is deeply rutted. If it's dry, AWD with high clearance and not heavily loaded will make it too. I am attaching photos to gelp you decide.
4. No clean drinking water here. Make sure you have enough water.
5. Keep an eye on the weather as it gets cloudy up on San Cristobal. You may not see anything.
6. It's very quiet and tranquil here. I was the only one here.
6. Photos added to give you an idea of the road.
Comments after the hike:
1. There was a lot of brush overgrowth on the trail. Please wear a pant and extra shoet for little padding in case you fall coming down.
2. Recommend leaving at 5:00 so heat is not a factor.
3. The hike is listed as a 2.5-hour hike. The last 600m (the most difficult), it took me almost 2.5 hrs to climb. It's pure gravel. It's hard hiking if you can not grip.
4. The hardest part of the hike was coming down. It is like sand boarding with shoes on. I had about 20-25 falls. Luckily, nothing serious. I am sore, though.
5. On the way up, the trail has flags that you can follow.
6. On the way down, I got lost as I could not cut across to the right (if seeing volcano from the ground up) as it was slippery. Whatever you do, follow your descent from flag to flag, or you will be lost. It will be difficult as slipping on the slope is a major concern.
7. Please go with someone or a guide. Solo hike is not recommended.
8. The 2.5 hours hike turned into 12 hours jungle survival skills. I was out of water, so I had to drink out of a stream bed. I'm lucky to be alive and to be able to make it back to Finca.
9. When I got lost I followed the mainstream going down. The thought eas that I will have have access to water and there may be houses next to the channel. I was right about the water availability, but there is no civilization. The stream bed at the end turns into a jungle. My only chance was cut across tgru the jungle to an ioverlander pin marked as 2.5 miles wild camp stay spot. Good thing I had a battery storage bank.
10. Please make sure you shoes have good traction. Otherwise, it will be slip and slide.
11.Make sure to take a mask as crater has a pungent smell. You start to feel soreness around the throat.

Starting point for the ascent of the San Cristóbal volcano. This hike is complicated and demanding, there is 1070m elevation in 3km, including 600m on the last km. The floor is unstable and sometimes helping your hands to try to find support. The entry price is US$ 5 or 180C for adults and free for children (even if at first they wanted us to pay). The campsite costs US$ 7.5 for adults and US$ 5 for children. Finding the excessive price for a family we slept in the forest 2.5km before. Becareful,to come here a 4x4 is mandatory according to us. There are 2 delicate passages, with slippery slopes and portions gathered by the rain. Our vehicle is 2.2m wide and 2.5m high, beyond that it is certainly necessary to cut branches.

qPrices are now 7,5$/person for camping and 5$/person for entry fees to the park. There is toilet and a cold shower but quite enjoyable after the trek on the volcano! Family leaving here is very nice, they offered us some local coffee and avocado :)

Access road is best with 4x4 but not mandatory if you have a small and high clearance vehicle. May be muddy after big rain.

Trek to the volcano is difficult but how rewarding with a spendid view on the crater, Pacific and Caribbean. It took us 2h30 to go up. The last part on the volcano is tough.

Beautiful view of the volcano, breezy, quiet, safe and relaxing place to spend a night. The family is very nice and chatty. $20 for 2 people. ($5 entry and $5 to camp per person.) Guide to hike the trail is $40. We opted out; windy dust storms on the volcano.

I would not attempt this without 4x4. It’s a steep climb and the sandy road has not been graded in some time. We went up in a Ford F150 and bottomed our a few times and came close to overheating. I’m not sure I’d attempt this road in the rainy season. As you get further up, the road narrows considerably and there are no places to turn around if you find yourself stuck. That being said, if you make it up, it’s worth it. As you get further up, the road narrows and looks less and less like a road. Keep going till you reach the gate!

Bring your own drinking water - they mentioned they’re having water issues up there. They gave us a bucket to shower with, which worked fine for us.

$6pp for entry and $6pp for camping. The road coming up is 4x4 (especially if it is raining) for the last 2km.

Very nice people working here. Haven't climbed the volcano yet, but the view of the top half is great. Worth the drive and a good place to stop after crossing the border from Honduras.

Finca near volcano. $5 entry to the ‘finca ecologica’ plus $5/night to camp. 1 cold shower, 2- occasionally flushing toilets. Nice, breezy, covered area with hammocks, tables, and chairs. There is a restaurant, BUT it isn’t always open and is extremely basic- best to b.y.o. food.
Gate blocking road is unattended, so you’ll need to walk around it and up to the farm to ask for entry. Guide to the volcano lives on site.

Trailhead to hike the volcano San Cristobal. They can accommodate tents and have a hotel. They offered us to sleep in our vehicle as well. The road to get here is high clearance and 4x4 ( we have a vanagon syncro). Beautiful spot and worth the trip if your vehicle is correct.
