This is also the start/end of a really spectacular 4x4 only route to Fiambala via Las Papas. Possibly the most fun 4 days of our entire Pan American trip so far. Please read and take seriously the warning pin in Las Papas if you are considering it.

The road is really not doable without a 4x4. We had to do with a tour. We paid 50’000 ars for 4 people (~80 usd). We started at 8:30am and came back at 12pm.
!! Now you need to pay a entrance fees to go to Piedra pomez and it’s 7000 ars for non-Argentinian !! (We were lucky because no one was at the entrance so we didn’t have to pay)

Ne careful with the sandy parts! Drive next to the road on the side

Take a tour from el Peñon if you don't have a 4x4. You will get stuck in the sandy parts at km 20-25 from here.

We were asked to pay 300 pesos each (4,5 euro), but a supposed park ranger on a motorcycle. He did have an ID, you will receive a ticket and you have to register yourself in his book. We told him we were just crossing to get to Las Papas and we didn't have to pay anything (as long as we didn't stop in the park). Others we've met, were asked to pay for their 3/4 year old daughter, but after some protesting, her entrance fee was waived. Doesn't sound like a real ranger to me, so perhaps somebody can inform at the tourist information and/or police in El Peñón if it is legit.
