Description

Outside of Almolonga towards Zunil you find Banos El Recreo.
More about what they offer on the tourist attraction marker for the same spot.
After having a bath we could stay for the night on their parking lot, for free.
Not at all a beautiful spot, but enough fairly level space, you are not visible from the road unless you have a very high vehicle. Some people passing by in the evening but otherwise quite quiet for being a spot in a build up area along a road. We could use the toilet of the banos till about 10 pm and again around 6 am.

To call the place ‘shabby’ is euphemistic even for Guatemalan standards. After having spent a night here with the smells of the warmish brook running through the premises and all that rubbish all around we didn't feel like using the baños anymore. Don Lionel, the owner of this place, however, is a nice guy. He didn’t charge us for staying here overnight and even invited us for a coffee in the morning.

Report Check-In

We arrived as the sun was setting, we asked about sleeping overnight and using their facilities in the morning. This was not an issue. We don’t speak Spanish but we shared some beers.

The next morning we enjoyed their facilities and spent the day with the family on their property in the mountains. We asked and they let us sleep in the mountain that night although no one else has camped there before.

For us it was absolutely an amazing experience.

The only cost was the cost to use their facility. The board inside posting prices are 25-60 pesos per hour per person.

FYI
-They have a Jeep and are Jeep people, if you have a Jeep you won’t regret going there.
-Mountain road requires 4x4, high clearance and a narrow vehicle.
-They love animals, our dog was welcome but we didn’t enter the facility with her.
-Camp location is a parking lot.

Perfect place if you need a steamy and really hot sauna. Don Lionel, the owner, is very welcoming and can take you for a hike into the surrounding moutains, too. Only 80 Quetzales for two persons. From the outside the building looks a bit shabby, but inside the sauna is perfect. The nights on the parking lot were quiet and felt safe. Electricity is available.
Indigenous markets in Almalonga and nearby Zunil are well worth a visit.

Report Check-In

From the outside rather shabby, but inside a very hot, clean and steamy sauna. The owner, Don Lionel, is happy to show you around. Hikes and horseback riding in the surrounding mountains is possible. Parking space is pretty levelled, safe and not noisy. Paid 40 Quetzales pp for sauna, hot showers, electricity and staying the night
