Description

Parking lot at about 4800m. From there, you have about one hour to walk to the top. All the tours drive to the parking lot opposite the mountain (closer to Cusco), so not a lot of traffic on the road. We only paid 10 SOL ppn.

Parking lot higher than the original one (4400m) from the new road on your left side. All the Cusco tour trips start from here now and set off from the trailhead around 7:00am to 08:30am and they get back to Cusco at 2:00pm. It took 2 hrs to get to the mirador at 5050m (for normal ppl including few breaks) and from the same route we came back in 1,5 hrs.

After 12:30pm there was nobody at the mirador so you can do like us. Sleep in one of the iOverlanders spots and start the trek at 10:00 am from here. You don't need to go at 5 or 6 am anymore ! Enjoy it fully !

Report Check-In

This parking lot was completely abandoned. You have to pay a local 5 Soles per person for maintenance of the road, then you drive on for about 20 min more to the actual parking lot.

Don't forget to take cash on the hike! You have to pay 10 Soles at the Mirador and again 10 Soles if you wanna go to Valle rojo!!! The 10 Soles Ticket was for two persons, don't know how they will do it if you're alone or three persons?! It was a little bit confusing!!! Keep your tickets!!!

Now there is even a newer parking lot further up. Unfortunatly we don‘t have the exact coordinates, just follow the road from here upwards. From the new parking lot you have about an hour to reach the top of the mountain. We paid only 10 SOL ppn.

Report Check-In

No tourists here, just a lady with a little store and a couple "security" guys. We asked them to watch our motos. We had to pay 10 soles here to use the trail, but also 10 soles right before rainbow mountain.

Report Check-In

Great that tourists don’t start from here anymore. Ample place if you want to sleep, but cold. Took about 1.5 hours from this point, and stupidly left at 10:15, arriving with all the other tourists. It’s a mad house. Wait till 11am! Only locals on this walk, like stated before, tourists come from the other side.

Report Check-In

We started hiking at 7am from this point. We met only few local kids during our hike to the top. Because most of tourist do not take this route any more. They come to top from the other side.
But we saw hundred of tourists at the top at 10am.
Still 10 soles pp

Report Check-In

Parking is free. The entry fee of 10s/pp you pay after 500m of hiking.
We recommend to start hiking at around 12:00. At the top, we were then maybe 10 people.

agree no need to start at 6:00 am. just sleep heliw in town and start your hike at 10 or 11. you'll have the summit to yourself.

I concur, I started up just before 1pm, had the place to myself at 3pm, the light changes later in the afternoon so the my fotos are quite different then the photoshopped ones :) just over an hour to walk down, Enough light to drive down to the valley and find a spot for the night. Be aware of the 10S ticket scam, ask for a ticket/receipt instead of just giving them cash. I had to ask twice before he gave me a ticket.

We stayed the night in the parking lot and can't recommend it enough. We started hiking the track at 6:30am--we were the only ones walking and there were a handful of people from other treks at the summit. When we came back down there were hundreds of people and horses, it was night and day from when we hiked it a few hours prior. Get there early and enjoy the views and silence 🙂

We stayed the night at the new parking lot. Very flat spaces and quiet at night. Highly recommend staying here if you want to get an early start to the hike. Don't forget the hike is $10sol/pp.

Stayed here in a small van. Very quiet at night. The first busses arrived at 7 am. Most of them at 8 am and it was very crowded! I suggest to start hiking before 7 am.

Start the here as well, around 06:00am is perfect to be one of the first Tourist at the Mirador, earlier could be nice, but the sun isn't high and strong enough to get the colors illuminated (in June)
Later is an option too, but consider the weather, it starts closing with clouds early, in our case already 11-12am!!!
Don't forget money for Entry 10sol p.P and coins for toilet and drinks on the way
Have fun!
