Description

Free dispersed camping area in Sequoia National Forest, ~ 1 mile off the Generals Highway, off Big Meadows Road. There's no sign saying "Horse Camp" but its shown on map you get when you enter Sequoia National Park. No facilities but beautiful area, some sites with views of the mountains. There were only a few others campers (also in tents) when we were there. OK for trucks and camper vans but entry road is likely not accessible for big rigs. The location is for our site; there were many sites before this one. Free.

ADMIN NOTE: user reports: "The campgrounds are further down the road (approximately 2 1/4 miles from Generals Highway), and are well marked. There are corrals along the entrance road so it's hard to miss. Buck Rock Campground is at the same turnoff. "

Pretty Nice official FREE campsites, We have choose one of the camp site down the road (around 3km from the entrance). We saw maybe 6-7 other vans during the way. Close of the general sherman (30min) Pretty quiet and clean. No water. No shower. Picnic table available for few spots. toilet available at the entrance. No cell coverage (AT&T) but fire pits available with permit. The view and the atmosphere here are very good. Felt safe. A lot of Room along the road. You will see a camping sign for each spots you can go. The road is perfectly ok for 2wd. I recommend

stayed at a spot a little further down the forest road. mostly flat spot with sprinter vans and big rigs sprinkled around. it had the basics, picnic tables and fire rings, but the views of the snow capped mountains we're awesome. all 4 free.

Nice place. Stayed in parking lot at the begin with toilet, fire ring (permit) and tables. No camping sign is only for not camping right behind the parkinglot, you had to put your tent a Little further.

we didn't quite make it to the campground but stayed at the parking lot a little before the lot. when we arrived there was a ranger parked there and we asked him of we could spend the night here. He told us: "where ever you want". so we parked our RV at the parking. there was a sign no camping but no one bothered us. there where toilet's, benches, bins and bbq's. very quiet and dark. 100% free.

Horse Camp actually exist a bit further down the road but really is meant for horses and their owners. However you can camp anywhere along this road for free. Just pick a spot. Plenty of people do it. Just respect the nature and dispose of your garbage.

If you rather stay in a proper campground Big Meadow is at the end of the road but you had to pay 20+ USD. Looked nice enough, very busy thus.

Another campground is only a couple 100m up the road turning of at Horse Camp towards the Lockout. Not sure if you have to pay. Many little camp spots in a little forest.

Follow the forest road and select your spot. Beautiful location and lots of sun on a rock shoulder with great view. Benches and fire rings under trees but no other facilities. Few other campers, but more space further down in the forest. Peaceful and free.
