Description

Officer stopped us and tried to say my US driver's license wasn't good after 3 days in Nicaragua (we'd been there four) and that there would be a fine unless we gave him money for coffee.

We made it clear we didn't think it was a real regulation and used extra poor Spanish while remaining polite and he gave up.

Our first bribery attempt in 8 months on the road.

Blatant attempt at extortion. Never give these guys a dime, or your original documents. You make it harder for everyone who comes after you.

I’m on a motorcycle, and was actually following the speed limit for once due to the highly visible checkpoint. I tucked away nicely behind a semi, to avoid being seen too early by the cops. That didn’t go according to plan.

When one of the fat transit cops saw me, he jumped in front of me telling me to pull over. Initially I was cordial and spoke to him in Spanish. He requested my license and documents, which I obeyed. Sadly I made the mistake of presenting my actual DL to him. He attempted to yank it out of my hand 3x before putting his hand on his pistol and finally pulling a 4th time to take it. It was then that I realized, he was going to be problematic so I switched to “I don’t speak Spanish”. He said he would write me a ticket for speeding, I told him my dash cam would argue I wasn’t (I don’t have a dash cam). I told him I wouldn’t produce anymore documents until he returned my license, and I’d make him YouTube famous (I don’t have a YouTube).

Finally a national (civil?) police officer approached us, and he handed me my license back- and told me to leave.

It was smooth sailing after this checkpoint. I got stopped 3x on the Pan-Am in Nicaragua, but I just offered them the opportunity to sit on my motorcycle to take a photo, while complimenting their Kalashnikov rifles. That was all the bribery it required to get a free pass, because I was absolutely flying through this country.

DO NOT HAND OVER ANY ORIGINAL PAPERWORK OR LICENSES. Attempted bribery. Told me my license wasn’t good, my insurance wasn’t good and that my license plate was incorrect.

With confidence, I told him everything is correct and he’s not the first police officer to check my paper work. Let us go after 15 minutes of stalling.

We got stopped and they tried to get us to pay for not having an orange triangle in the car. He said he was going to keep the license, I told him he was not allowed to and in the regulations it says we need to have a ticket written and we pay it at the bank. He said he would keep the license until we got back, I told him he was not allowed and he got angry and said he would ask his boss. He came back and told us we could go and said have a nice trip. (This whole interaction was in Spanish they seem to speak no english.)

They were here again, we were driving in a little convoy of three cars. A semi was in front of us and he signaled us to overtake. The police waited and flagged us all down and wanted to fine us because we crossed the solid line.
Luckily one of our convoy is retired French police, after mentioning this they let us all go.
Be careful on this stretch with overtaking, they also had a radar gun.
