no ropes, no robberies. the road has some small sections of sand but no problem on a heavy bike or with two people

Just putting a little heads up for overlanders heading out this way. A few kilometres before we got to this turn off 2 guys on a motorbike were driving along side us with a gun held up to us. We sped off and tried to get another car to pull over for us but as soon as they did they pulled the gun on them too. At that point both cars turned around and headed back out toward the town. The guys followed for a long time but couldn't keep up. I don't want to scare anyone away from this area but maybe it's best to do in convoy. I haven't heard about this happening to anyone else so maybe it was a once off. Just try to go as early as possible.

We took this way on our way back. There are "tolls" but no one asked for money, just accepted what we gave them. see our post for Punta Gallinas lighthouse for more details. This route made trip back about 10 km shorter.
