Vehicle insurance IS mandatory to enter Chile. We entered from Peru (with Peruvian plates) and were told that our Peruvian SOAT was sufficient. This is wrong and we were fined $100 (dollars) and license captured overnight near Arica. I think you can buy Chilean vehicle insurance at the Chile side of the border when entering. We found confusing information online, and obviously the border workers don't know the law.

Report Check-InI don’t think there is a place here to buy. Buy it online, HDI Seguros. It’s cheap ($43usd for a year), uses Paypal portal. Easy peasy.
